The text of this book begins with philosophical question such as what is love, can the world survive without it? Probably not! The book is challenging this axiom in stressing that the world is being cocooned into the thought that the Greek word “Eros” meaning “love” is a true love for the modern society. The author, in this respect, has methodically put together a popular thought for pondering without provoking thought.
However people may suggest not another book on love, surely! But, yes, with the difference. The belief is that the Greek word “Eros” (love) which has captured the imagination of people in the modern word is an illusion. Philosophy itself , meaning “love of wisdom,” happens to be good example . Philos means loving people, things, or ideas in nonsexual ways. The relationship between a student and teacher can be philial love, as can the attraction to a friend, poem, landscape, mathematical theorem, moral theory, subject of study, professional practice, or social cause. People who love their work have philial relationship with their careers. Do you love and celebrate life itself? This too is philos’ (Marinoff , 2003).
One of the most powerful expressions of philos is friendship and can be stressed thus: In friendship the ego is not dissolved in the other; on the contrary it blossoms. Love, in its original meaning, is an unconditional action of putting someone else’s welfare before one’s own. As the world has grown older, mankind’s definition of love has been warped and has dwindled down to nothing more than a fickle feeling of affection and romantic attraction– into something conditional and usually very temporary. The idea of love has been reduced to an ideal of reciprocity; “love” has become self-serving instead of self-sacrificing. Unfortunately, love often dies because of one or another person’s selfishness and pride. Pride and love engage in war in every relationship and, unless love is in its true form (unconditional), pride strangles it.
