A quote from Peggy McIntosh’s essay shows how the way we are treated in our societies has a direct impact on the way we perform in that society. The essay caused me to think deeply about myself and how I truly am privileged to be white; although we may not notice it there are millions of privileges linked to our skin colour. Upon finishing the reading I was questioning not only white privilege but also things like racism and what I myself could do to help people of other ethnicity’s not feel underprivileged. While interpreters and translators can work in any field, they frequently come across a sea of doubts when deciding what word to use, therefore, building a glossary on specialized terms can make our jobs more convenient. Even though this is a time-consuming task, at the end this will pay off. As my area of interest is interpreting in immigration settings, I have chosen to build a glossary on immigration based on the book from the series Current Controversies Immigration, by Debra A. Miller, published by Cynthia Sanner. Although immigration rates have decreased over the years, there is still a huge communication barrier between LEP (Limited English Proficiency) people and immigration staff, thus demanding the need for interpreters and translators.

A language sample analysis (LSA) is a tool that generates the coding and transcriptions of a language sample to document the language used every day in various speaking situations (Miller, Andriacchi, & Nockerts, 2016). Language samples are typically 50-100 words in length and are voice-recorded and then transcribed by the clinician. Language samples are done using spontaneous speech, such as typical conversation, or narrative contexts, such as story or event recalls (Miller, Andriacchi, & Nockerts, 2016). The speech-language pathologist (SLP) will take the recording and write out, in the exact words of the child and clinician, every utterance (Bowen, 2011). The SLP will then "code" the sample.

The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 was a masterpiece of the 19th century. It represented the grand facade of glamour and American achievement. The excerpt from The Red Umbrella by Christina Diaz Gonzalez, and the excerpt from “A 'Band-Aid ' for 800 Children" by Eli Sastow, both portray the subject of family separation. The authors of these texts use similar and different techniques to show us family separation brings negative feelings to everyone affected by this. There are other things the texts have in common other than their subject. For example, both of the excerpts include figurative language.

In the 1900s, both Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson gave an important speech. The theoretical framework of this thesis is based on agenda setting theory and the concept of framing. Walter Lippmann intellectually founded the concept of agenda setting. Even though Lippmann not yet mentions agenda setting namely, he does indeed elaborate the theoretical foundation and the general ideas, which essentially define agenda setting theories today (McCombs 2004, 3). “His thesis is that the news media, our windows to the vast world beyond direct experience, determine our cognitive maps of that world” (McCombs 2004, 3).

A translator may subject him-/herself either to the original text, with the norms it has realized, or to the norms active in the target culture, or in that section of it which would host the end product. Translation is a complicated task, during which the meaning of the source-language text should be conveyed to the target-language readers. In other words, translation can be defined as encoding the meaning and form in the target language by means of the decoded meaning and form of the source language. Different theorists state various definitions for translation.

“Citizen Journalism” has been hailed by many as a ‘new’ form of Journalism that will overtake ‘traditional’ forms of Journalism. Do you agree? Discuss the pros and cons of such an argument. Citizen Journalism is an argumentative concept by its very nature and one which is particularly hard to define.
