The Death Penalty
Imagine that someone goes to one of your family members and does something horrible. Maybe this person rapes your family member or kidnaps them. What if this person even murders your family member? If they go to court for this, they may get sentenced to life in prison with no further punishments. If you were in this situation, what would you want to happen to the person that committed this crime? This is why we should have capital punishment for these horrible crimes. Capital punishment has been known to deter crimes, it provides closure to the families, and criminals should not be allowed to take a police officer or an innocent person’s life without serious punishment. One big reason why capital punishment should be allowed is because it has been known to deter crime. Fewer homicides will take place in the U.S. “All penalties have some deterrent effect, and the more severe the penalty, the more it deters.” (Jacoby) Criminals will be afraid of committing these crimes when their own lives are at stake. In 2016, a total of 135 police officers died in the line of duty, which is the highest number of police fatalities on the job since 2011 (Melissa chan). Less police officers will be killed on the line of duty if the criminals that murder them are sentenced to death. Twenty-one of those 135 officers were killed in ambush-style attacks across the country. This form of killing is even more unacceptable than a regular murder. The average annual totals of police fatalities is 151 over the past decade. Out of about 1.1 million police officers, it may not seem like much, but that number is still 151 more than it should be. There have also been many cases of innocent people being murdered in ambush-style attacks (Sarah, Mongoliola). All of the police officers and innocent people being killed proves that capital punishment is
Even though the death penalty can produce irreversible miscarriage of justice, death penalty should be allowed because it provides comfort to the victim's family, it deters crime, and you know the criminal will never hurt anyone again. Even though the death penalty can produce irreversible miscarriages of justice, Death penalty should be allowed because it provides comfort to the victim's family. Family and friends of the victims should never have to worry about parole or a slight chance of that same criminal escaping. Knowing that that one person
The ACLU believes that the “state shouldn’t give itself the right to kill human beings especially when it kills with premeditation.” (ACLU The case against the death penalty). In a research study by Richard Dreser from the Death Penalty Information Center (1995). Many chiefs of police and attorneys believed that capital punishment wasn’t an effective crime deterrent. Willie Williams a police chief from Los Angles, California said “I am not convinced that capital punishment in and of itself is a deterrent to crime, because people do not think about the death penalty before they commit a violent crime.”
The death penalty is not fair because it is unconstitutional. The death penalty is in direct violation the 8th amendment as it states, “ Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishment inflicted” ( The 8th amendment ). This is important because in the 8th amendment is says no cruel or unusual punishment but the death penalty is both of those things, making it hard for the death penalty to be seen as a good thing. The death penalty also violates the 14th amendment. The 14th amendment states that every citizen has equal protection of the law.
By September 1, 2015, the United States police have killed 776 people and 161 of those people were unarmed at the time of their death. There have been too many incidents where police have injured or killed someone that could have been prevented. Using maximum force with a suspect has become a routine in situations. Officers have not been given the proper training to deal with fatal situations. If they were given more training, police departments would have to spend more money on training, but police brutality situations would decrease lives would be saved, and police would get their good reputation back.
The death penalty can bring some peace to these families. It will ensure that there will be no more further victims. These killers are getting more attention than they deserve. We hear more about the murderers rather than the victims (“retribution in support of the death penalty”). “My dad wasn’t there for me when i turned 21 last month.
If the cold-blooded killing of thousands does not lower premeditated murder, there is really no point (because let 's face it, the saying “eye for an eye” is childish and socially unacceptable). This same conclusion was agreed upon in a recent poll by almost 90% of the world’s criminological societies (Facts About the Death Penalty). However in all honesty, the argument against the death penalty doesn’t just stop at its redundancy, but also its
While there are far more subjects to discuss regarding to this issue, I feel it necessary to state that I believe the death penalty should exist in a perfect society. I believe that certain crimes and certain situations warrant the punishment of death. However, the our society is not perfect. The justice system has failed to fairly use this punishment in far too many instances, and concludes that they cannot justly wield this
Deadly Justice For most of recorded history, the death penalty has been regarded as a barbaric and brutal form of punishment. The United States Federal Government should outlaw the use of the death penalty. Eliminating the death penalty is justified because it does not deter crime; it generates higher expenses, violates human rights, and puts innocent lives at risk. Death penalty does not prevent crime; delinquency rates are usually higher in states with the death penalty.
It is sad that in today’s society something like murder occurs as frequently as it does. The death penalty is here to help instill fear in anyone who is contemplating murder. It helps ensure that they will never get away with something as awful as murder or even worse mass murder. Morals should not be questioned if these individuals themselves lack their own morals. The harsh truth is that the death penalty is a necessary evil that must be kept in place in today’s society.
The death penalty should not be used to punish violent criminals for, the death penalty is a violation of constitutional rights. Not to mention, the same government that opposes and goes against murder, embraces it by committing the same act. Ultimately, the cost of executing a violent criminal does not provide a solution to crimes that will continuously arise. Reason 1: The death penalty should be
I believe that, to an extent, police officers should be held accountable for their actions that lead to the death of an individual in their custody. By to an extent, I mean that if the police officer had the power to prevent the death and did not, or put the individual in the way of harm, or was even out right the cause with no explanation they should be held accountable for their actions. Police brutality is a huge problem right now, and sure it's better than it was before it still is a problem today. Reasons for police brutality today are because of inadequate police training, police officers with major complexes, racism, fear, and lack of legal repercussions for police officers who use excessive force. Because of the lack of repercussions police officers often get away with hurting and killing individuals like Freddie Carlos Gray Jr, whose murders cases were dropped and acquitted and Khalil from the book “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, whose killer was not indicted.
Today many old issues are being raised again about how and who the penalty is carried out on. Only 32 states in the United States still use the death penalty, other states have banned it for various reasons. One of those reasons is because the amount of money it costs to execute an inmate sometimes costs more than it would to just give them life imprisonment. Another reason is because the process of capital punishment can take up to fifteen years; so many states would rather just give life sentences than have to go through that. Even though there are reasons to ban the death penalty, there are reasons to keep it
According to the Article Police Killings have gotten out of hand which has led some to think of Capital Punishment. “But Republican Gov. Susanna Martinez said the shooting of a police officer in Hatch N.M. on Friday, as well as several police killings elsewhere in the nation, Prove the punishment is needed to deter society’s grossest crimes”(Shouten). I think this evidence is important because it states from New Mexico’s Governor that in order to rid “society’s grossest crimes,” Capital Punishment must be set
Death Penalty According to the 2010 Gallup Poll, 64% of the United State of America are supporting the death penalty, I as an American am part of that 36% that is against it. I do not believe that we as human being should determine whether another person should live or die. A second reason that I am against the death penalty is for the reason that the accused person could be innocent and normally the accused person only has one court presentation and is only judged by the judge not a jury of their peer, and is sent to death row where they pay for a crime that they haven’t done. My final reason that i do not believe that the death penalty should count as a punishment for the American people is because, a person that has done a massive massacre shouldn’t just be able to leave the world just like that without paying and suffering for what they have done, Or should the death punishment continue as it is for it has a great benefit to us as citizens of the United States.
In the light of, I propose my solution shoot me, I shoot you back and take my life, I guarantee to take yours. We can only become a hero when we learn from a villain how to defeat a villain. One question that probes me everyday is “Are police getting away with murder?” Their beliefs are that it is “better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6” making them think it is okay to use deadly force resisting the chance of being murdered themselves.
