The cause of the Progressive Era was the Gilded Age, which began during the 1870s. During this age, the United States suffered from extreme corruption in government. This was because of the rising power of political machines and monopolies. Many politicians favored big businesses and through their political power, they were able to give incentives to those who supported their corruption. Due to these infuriating situations, Americans decided that in order for there to be a change in society, the government had to get involved, thus the beginning of the Progressive Era. Correspondingly to the rising corruption in government, President Theodore Roosevelt gave a speech addressing the issue of rising corruption and what the government has done to end said corruption (Doc. 2). President Roosevelt informs the audience that the government has put regulations on business corporations as a solution to alarming monopolies and political machines (Doc. 2). When analyzing President Theodore Roosevelt’s speech at Rhode Island, it is evident that the purpose is to convince the audience that the government is trying to protect the citizens from big businesses by placing regulations. Furthermore, when inspecting the voting system, Americans spotted flaws that made the system not as just as it was perceived. It is unmistakable that voting is corrupt because many citizens suffer through the pressure of being subconsciously forced to vote for their alderman (Doc.1). This is the case because oftentimes their job is dependent on the choice of the alderman; by not voting for their alderman, they risk losing their job (Doc. 1). It was written to defend himself against the accusations of a corrupt bargain. In these examples it is obvious that voting, while excluding Indians and black Slaves, was open to anyone who wanted to qualify for it. The Progressive Movement of the late 1800's and the early 1900's was one of the most influential political movements in American history. The Progressives sought to shift power away from political elites and into the hands of the citizenry (Howell, 2011). Progressive reformers did not limit their efforts in improving urban conditions and to reform political systems. Their ideas influenced business and educational practices. They attempted to improve the overall quality of life for many Americans.
As the Civil War came to an end, the U.S. entered into the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age was characterized by industrialization, urbanization, and immigration, but it also consisted of poverty, labor unions, and political and business corruption due to the significant change of industrialization in U.S. society. In order to change and fix the troubles of the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era began in 1897, where progressives believed that it was the responsibility of the government to bring positive change for the working class. The problems that people dealt with in the period were from industrialization, immigration, and urbanization. People who tried to help reform the government from these horrible conditions were called muckrakers. Many people contributed to help out America's problems and soon enough they were solved. Industrialization had flaws and benefits for all peoples .

They wanted to bring change and reform to the United States by creating acts and fixing problems through the government. Progressives were successful in bringing reform at the federal level with the Clayton Antitrust Act, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and the Keating-Owen act of 1916.
The Progressive Era was a big shift in US history because this was a time in which the government was more involved in things like social reforms. During this era, the US government was getting bigger and taking on more responsibility. Because of the expansion of urbanization and industrialization, there was an oil demand. With the expansion of urbanization and industrialization, there were more job opportunities for Americans. The government got involved more by giving Americans opportunities and jobs.

Politicians wanted a more modern government that searched to answer the social problems that were arising with the many new and old immigrants that no resided in the U.S. On the other hand, workers demanded more rights in the workplace and better-working conditions. Women wanted to look for new activities outside the home because a life inside a home was becoming dull to them. Progressives during this era were striving for progress in their government and were very diverse in how they obtained this change.
Corporate greedy and corrupt politicians were specific problems and injustices that were present in American life during the late 1800s and early 1900s however these were addressed during the progressive era with laws and regulations. Throughout the gilded era corrupt politicians and corporate greedy allowed the upper class and businessmen to take advantage of the working class. This means that a majority of the population were hurt during the gilded age whereas a small percentage benefitted. As seen in document 1, living conditions were crowded, dirty, and unsafe.
In the period between 1900 and 1920, the federal government and reformers were very successful in bringing social, economic, and political reform to the federal government. While not every aspect of it was successful, the rights of women, fighting against child labor and limiting the control of trusts and monopolies were three distinct successes of that time. Even before the progressive era, women challenged their place and articulated new visions of social, political and economic equality. The progressive era was a turning point for women as organizations evolved fighting for equal rights. Woman began to become very involved in a variety of reform movements.
On the other hand Theodore Roosevelt believe corruption is the systems fault not the people's. In his speech he says “I believe in the election of the united states senators by direct vote .” this means he doesn’t like the system for voting. (Steffens,2) (Roosevelt,2)
The progressive era which lasted from 1890-1920 in American society was the institution of radical reforms brought about by the millions of Americans involved in volunteer organizations across the country. During this time Americans worked to create solutions to the problems caused by the rapid industrialization and urbanization of the country. The progressive era was not a single movement, but rather a collection of movements all of which were intended to improve the lives of Americans. This was a truly remarkable time for women and the end of the era would see almost universal women’s suffrage with the passing of the nineteenth amendment in 1920.
The Progressive Era was from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. It was filled with muckrakers trying to eliminate the flaws in the US. This included problems such as the exploitation of workers, tenement housing, and impure food and drugs. These problems were hurting U.S. citizens and needed to be fixed. Without muckrakers and people who saw what was happening and wanted change, these problems could still be here today.
The progressive era was marked by young men and women taking steps to take down the corrupt government in the United States. These “Reformers” were from all walks of life. Whether they were young, old, poor, wealthy, Democrat, or Republican, it did not matter. They were all striving for the same goal. Progression.
The growing economy allowed the middle class to grow and succeed. This growing sense of pride for the country created justifications for the expansion of the country, such examples are Big Stick, Dollar, and Moral Diplomacy. The progressive era came due to increasing amounts of reformers that wanted to improve the country’s systems. These reformers came about because of imperialism. Imperialism gave the idea that our country was great and should live up to the expectations that it gives to others.
