Propaganda is often seen as unfavorable, because of its use of exaggerated statistics or false statements to manipulate whomever is looking at that poster or advertisement to believe that it’s true. For example, the propaganda in Nazi Germany, they would control what the German citizens could see, read, and hear. Dr. Joseph Goebbels, was put in charge by Hitler, in order to control the propaganda that the public population had access to. Therefore, it was his job to make sure that the German citizens were only allowed contact to what made the Nazi campaign seem like the best and only opinions they had. When actually this is one of the most positive forms of propaganda that we see in our everyday lives. An example of this would be "The Real Cost" campaign committee, this one really focuses on the youth, it really shows how dangerous cigarettes can actually be. Another thing is that you see this committee 's work almost everyday, they have ads on Pandora, Instagram, Youtube, and on top of that they also have commercials on television. The best way to do this was to use propaganda, the United States is very well known for some of its propaganda used during World War II. If giving out false information to persuade an audience is untruthful then why as a society we are still reaching for the untruthful? Persuasion is alternatively what all advertisements are aiming for no matter if it is for a product or idea. Over the use of methods like ethos, pathos, and logos advertisements become more appealing and compelling to everyday people. War propagandas especially utilize the methods, ethos and pathos to support the idea of glorify American and demonize enemies. After a while, the United States got involved and were in need of the people’s support. It took convincing but once people got on board with the idea of going to war, war fever in the United States was at an all-time high. This is evident in the televised premature ending of the Montag’s chase and in the symbolism of 451 by the government in Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451. However, in our world propaganda has been used to unite a country through targeted mass persuasion. This is seen in two classic U.S propaganda posters that encourage U.S citizens to join the army: “I want you”(index 1) and “Remember Dec. 7th” (index 2).
To gain their support, the public image of women had to be changed. More propaganda was produced, encouraging women to enter the workforce as a way to continue the progression of the United States as their men went off to fight. Propaganda targeted towards women usually consisted of an emotional tone rather than an authoritative one. “To mobilize women… government propaganda needed… central theme… concentrated on patriotism and emotional appeals” (Mathis). It was known by the government that the best way to persuade women into aiding the war effort was to appeal to their emotions; women were angry that their loved ones were forced to go off to war to partake in a fight that was believed America had no need to be in.
Propaganda is used in the book Animal Farm to convince the animals to believe certain ideals. Squealer makes the animals think a certain way, and thus, manipulates the animals. In much the same way, the modern world uses propaganda to achieve nearly, if not the same, goals. In modern times, propaganda is utilized to achieve three goals: to deceive people, to justify wars, and to destroy the credibility of a person or nation. In George Orwell’s book, Animal Farm, Squealer uses propaganda negatively to influence inhabitants of the farm, which is parallel to today with how propaganda deceives people, justifies war, and destroys credibility of a person or nation.
