Logos: The authors explained how they got kidnapped while they were walking alone together to school in the morning. This logically explains why kids shouldn’t go anywhere without adult supervision. Ethos: The authors supported their argument by giving facts and details about what had happened during their abduction. Pathos: The authors gave descriptive insight about what had happened while they were being tortured and how it hurt them mentally and emotionally.
The author used different elements of ethos, logos, pathos, and kairos to effectively communicate with the reader. Eve Tushnet the author of this essay does not have a whole lot of ethos. Eve is lacking credibility and character because she is not an established author. Eve is not a credible author because she is a freelance writer. Eve does not have good credibility because she blogs and contributes to an opinion magazine and website.
Year after year, America has been singled out for its deteriorating educational system. Fridman suggests in his passage that this is due to the attitude of anti-intellectualism plaguing American society. Fridman decides to use ethos and logos as his rhetorical strategies in his essay. Ethos convinces someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. Logos appeals to an audience by using logic and reason.
Ethos are one of three rhetorical devices used in all forms of writing, that of which Marjie Lundstrom provides the strongest use of ethos in her article “Kids Are Kids- Until They Commit Crimes” in order to defend her argument of how all minors, even those who have committed atrocious crimes, shall be tried through the juvenile court system. One technique Lundstrom uses is the use of a logo stated by a credible source, “ The nation’s juvenile arrest rate for murder fell 68 percent from 1993 to 1999, hitting its lowest level since 1966, according to the Justice Department.” By providing this statement in her article, Lundstrom is able to defend her claim that minors should not be tried in court as adults. Minors’ crime rates are dropping which can conclude that they are becoming aware and learning right from wrong, making the audience feel sorry for the minors being tried as adults. “A week from now, a judge in Florida will decide how old Lionel Tate really is.”
Through pathos, the reader feels as if they are responsible and must help. Imagery was regularly used throughout the book to describe what it was like to see how others lived. Imagery was also used to arouse emotion in the reader. The author vividly described scenes like the wars and villages he saw. This helped the reader get a better understanding of what those countries are like and how their citizens live.
Emotional and physical abuse were the two main types of abuse mentioned throughout the novel. Through extreme amounts of brutality and torture to emotional devastation and agony, “Indian Horse” certainly shows readers that living through abuse can have life long consequences. Readers can imply that being repeatedly beaten and tortured at a very young age makes the child live in fear and agony.
