Writers often have mistakenly written essay or article in a bias point of view, which leads to the loss in credibility of their work. A common mistake that writers make is the use of first person. Once the first person point of view is brought into a piece of written work, the credibility of the work drop dramatically, and writers also often get drift off to sharing their personal experience and opinion on the topic. However, it is acceptable when professional writers use first person point of view if necessary when it comes to giving a professional statement or advice, because readers expect professional writers to be an expert on the topic they are discussing on without introducing personal bias. There is no doubt that the expected result from surveying people would not have a decade that stands out from the rest, because most of the people would choose their childhood decade since they all want to be a child again, but the actual result proves otherwise. Through the result of the actual survey and statistics, Stephanie Coontz concludes that the 1950s is the best choice for traveling back in time. Even though there are pros and cons of the 1950s that changes the value of that decade, 1950s remain as the best decade when compare to the others. Coontz’s thesis is this: “In a 1966 poll by the Knight-Ridder News Agency, more Americans chose the 1950s than any other single decade as the best time for children to grow up” (27-28). Writers often start off a written work with an attention grabber and then slowly present their thesis statement at the end of their introductory paragraph. Statistics are given when comparing the 1950s to the other decades, proposing the 1950s as the better decade; “Ninety percent of all the households in the country were families in the 1950s, in comparison with only 71 percent by 1990. Eighty-six percent of all children lived in two-parent homes in 1950, as opposite to just 72 percent in 1990” (31). Statistics and graphs are often tools that professional writers use on essays and articles when they are trying to prove a point, it makes the supporting evidence sounds more trustworthy because researches are done on the topic. Coontz also uses outside sources on top of statistics for support; sometimes she references other people’s work when she makes a statement in the essay; other times she quotes other people directly in the essay. In very few sections of the essay, Coontz ties in her own experience along with outside sources as supporting for she is a professional teacher; “In recent years I’ve often thought back to the gratitude I felt toward my mother for that act of trust in me. I wish I had some way of earning similar points from my own son” (28). Every time she talks about her experience in the essay, she avoids stating too much about her own opinion or overly bias, her point of her experience is often concluded within approximately three sentences, giving the readers a feeling that she is staying on
An important part of an exemplification essay is using correct essay structure and examples. The examples may be used to help the writer explain, clarify, and support their arguments or points (Kirszner 207). Examples could also be used to add interesting topics in the authors paper, making the paper enjoyable (Kirszner 208). Using correct writing structure in the exemplification essay is also important (Kirszner 211-212). Annie Lamontt, author of Bird by Bird, offers a glimpse into a world many writers can relate to. In the chapter called “Shitty First Drafts”, she utilizes the writers she associates with as evidence to support that the writing process does not begin with an immaculate first draft (Lamont, 1994). This is the “fantasy of the uninitiated” (Lamont, 1994, p. 1). Strangers to the writing process may not understand that writing isn’t simply “writing”—it is a process. The uninitiated, in this case, are non-writers.
The article by Donald Murray entitled, “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscripts” provides readers a better understanding of the writing process and argues that writers learn to write, by writing and rewriting. Murray also contends that writers must learn to be their own best enemy. Well, I believe I have this trait covered! I will confess, that I purposely saved this course for last, due to the number of years between my last structured learning experience and returning to school to complete a BSN degree.
Taking different English and writing classes has allowed me to write different types of papers. One paper that can be very challenging is the personal narrative. There are certain requirements that you must follow; each paper is different depending on who assigns it. When I am assigned to write this type of paper, usually it is dreadful to start and accomplish. This type of paper should just be removed from college writing courses.

What We Really Miss About The 1950s In her essay, “What We Really Miss About the 1950s”, Stephany Coontz talks about the myth of the 1950s. She begins her argument by stating some reasons why the nostalgia for the 1950s exists. The main thing Americans miss about the those days is the stability. She acknowledges that this fallacy is not insane.
Every mother wants what the best for her child, even if that child may not believe so. In her letter to her son, John Quincy Adams, Abigail Adams addresses him during his travels in France and defends the rationale of her previous advice while providing her new advice, and partly demands, on the subjects of honor and duty. Abigail Adams uses emotional appeals in the form of personal repetition, flattering metaphors, and prideful personification in order to advise and persuade her son in his personal growth and appeal to his personal qualities, such as pride of honesty and knowledge, to spur his ambitions and actions. To start off the letter, after greeting him and explaining the occasion of her writing, Abigail uses personal repetition with the word “your,” before qualities and events with a positive connotation to appeal to John’s pride and leave him open to listen to more of her her advice, as she already successfully advised him in his trip to France. In only the second sentence of the letter, Abigail already throws in that her advice is, to John, “for your own benefit,” (5) later she speaks of, once again to John, “your knowledge,” (11) and finally, “your understanding,” (14).
The 1950’s was characterized as a prosperous and conformity for various reasons. One of the main reasons was the development of the suburbs. Since a lot of the black people migrated to the big cities there was rich and middle class families left to live in the suburbs areas to escape the crime of the cities. This mass migration later became known as the “white flight” (Document A). The 1950’s was the times when the American soldiers were coming back home from WWII and many new babies were born.
In this essay, we will be telling you the differences and similarities between the 1960s and the 2000s. The year 1969 was 49 years ago but that does not mean that it was forgotten, some of the things in the 1960s are still here today in 2018. Welcome to the most important set of equipment the world has ever seen: my five year old golf clubs.
