By the year 1786, the people realized that the foundation on which our country was built on, that being the Articles of Confederation, had some major flaws that needed to be modified. The Articles of Confederation hindered Congress from taxing the people, regulating domestic affairs, and even controlling the countries commerce. With these restrictions on the power of Congress, it made it very difficult for Congress to make money. Instead, they had to rely on generous contributions from the states, which most of the states didn't partake in. The United States had no money to pay the soldiers back who served in the Revolutionary War or to pay back the money from the foreign loans that was granted to them during the war, and this resulted in the United …show more content…
The two plans allowed congress to have new powers to regulate the national defense and the economy. The only problem was that the Virginia plan wanted the bigger more populous states to have more of a say in the voting while the New Jersey Plan called for each state to have a equal number of votes. The delegates form each state finally agreed to send one person from each state to a grand committee which then they would vote and decide the issue at hand. On July, 1787 the grand committee approved what is called the Connecticut Compromise. This Compromise gave each state the same number of votes in the upper house but made the votes in the lower house matter on the population of a states. September 17, 1787, the new founded Constitution was approved by the convention and was ready to be sent to each of the states for ratification. It was time vote on the new formed constitution, and each state had an equal number of votes. The voting results came back with thirty-nine out of fifty-five delegates approved of the new constitution, which was barely enough to win. The Untied States finally had a constitution and a strong national
1a. Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress didn’t have the power to tax the colonies so their only option was to request the states for money, which often ended in rejection. Because Congress had so little money to regulate the army/navy and resolve crises, they sold off western lands and printed worthless print money in desperate attempts to do without money. The constitution solves this dilemma by giving Congress the power to make revenue through taxing and borrowing and also the power to appropriate funds.
The Articles of Confederation had many weaknesses as well as positives. From the pros side we have Josh DiGiorgio and Jacob Chrispim. From the cons side we have Grayson Jons and Lexi Rosmarin. We will start with the cons.
Articles of Confederation was the written document that established the functions of the national government of the United States after it declared independence from Great Britain.” The Articles were needed after the United States won war. There was no unity among the country. They used the Articles as their set of rules. There were many important people that had to do with the constitution.
It starts with the failure of the Articles of Confederation (adopted in 1781) to provide the necessary framework of a national government that could protect its rights as an equal among others. To be more specific there are three issues facing America in 1786. 1) In Foreign Affairs; the failure to prevent the both the closure of the Mississippi River by Spain at New Orleans and the failure in gaining control of a series of forts along the Great Lakes that under the Treaty of Paris (1783) were suppose to be turned over to the United States after the Revolutionary War ended by England. 2) Within America there was a growing issue of both currency control and out of control inflation. With NO centralized government to control both the growth of currency from the states and inflation throughout the nation.
Still, the New Jersey Plan suggested that Congress should be given the authority to tax and to manage trade. These issues between the two plans was settled by the Great Compromise. The Great Compromise consisted of two houses. In the lower house, the House of Representatives, representation would be based on population. In the upper house, the Senate, each state would get two votes.
On September 17, 1787, the convention ended when 38 delegates signed the Constitution and it was finally ratified on May 29, 1790. The Bill of Rights was added not too long after in 1791. In my opinion, for this instance, I believe that compromise was a reasonable decision although I do not believe it is the best option for everyone because sometimes you may not get everything you want/need by choosing something over another, as well as, compromising can cause conflict between both
The Articles of Confederation were developed to unite all of the 13 colonies as a nation, rather than having them all govern their selves based off of population. The Articles of Confederation had created a very loose alliance of the 13 colonies or states as they will later be referred to. The Articles of Confederation also had been created due to the fact that the Declaration of Independence never stated the word, “nation” and this led others to believe after independence had been officially stated that the colonies would attempt to govern themselves. Furthermore, the Articles of Confederation were completely necessary in its making because the Congress had to lay a base government down for the colonies or an “example” government. The first thing the Articles of Confederation provided would be the fact it gave the states the ability to retain their freedom,
While under the Articles of Confederation, the government deemed to be unfit for the newfound, thriving country. In order to keep this nation thriving, our Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution. Originally, the Constitution was to only replace the Articles of Confederation. However, its amendments portrayed the struggles of once stolen rights and gave the nation a push in the right direction for their federal government. Therefore, the Constitution was a story of America’s rough past that molded the nation into this remarkable society.
Throughout history America has had a lot of different adversities. America has a long line of history that has not always been absolutely perfect; but yet tries to perfect itself. The early foundations of America started off by pertaining to The British Empire. Being part of the Empire they had perks, but they also had disadvantages. Some Americans wanted more rights as citizens while others felt America would be better off standing as its own country.
As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.
Eventually the states were able to compromise the representation in the Senate, later being called the Connecticut Compromise. The compromise stated that every state gets two Senators and each Senator gets one vote in the Senate. Through compromises and having the best interest for the country, the convention was able to vote on the Constitution of what was now the United States of America. The Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. This created the government that the United States of America now sees
The first official constitution of the United States was the Articles of Confederation. A congress consisting of 13 delegates from each of the original colonies worked during and following the American Revolutionary War. The Articles were written in 1777 and formally ratified in 1781. It was one of the nation 's first attempts at establishing diplomacy and reasonable authority. They were well-intentioned, however, the Articles proved to be quite problematic and not entirely functional.
The Revolutionary War ended and now the Articles of Confederation are showing how weak they really are. On May 25th - September 25th 1787, delegates led by James Madison and Alexander Hamilton came together to fix the Articles of Confederation, but ended up creating a whole new document. That Document was the Constitution. After that, the whole country was debating whether the Constitution should be ratified. Based on the sources, the Constitution should have been ratified because the country was in economic distress, the nation was vulnerable, and the authors wanted the best for the country.
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of Confederation were written during a time when the American people feared a strong national government.
This is one of the successful parts of the Articles of Confederation because under the articles, the government cannot institute tax thus the government cannot make money. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 removed debts from the states and it also allowed the government to raise money by selling off the new
