A lot of students considering a civil service career think that a criminal justice degree is only good for being a law enforcement officer or, in combination with a legal degree, a criminal lawyer. Here are a whole range of criminal justice career choices that many degree-holders overlook, but are well worth consideration:
Social Work/ Personal Cases
These may include child support and child protective services, missing persons, domestic violence and spousal or elderly abuse. Domestic legal social work is often identified as having extreme pros and cons to it. On the one hand, you're working to make everyone's home life better. On the other, the work can be stressful when confronting a perpetrator or heart-wrenching when confronting a victim.

The law enforcement officer does the arresting; you just solve the crimes. Be aware that it's hardly the glamorous job Hollywood movies would have you believe; your reality will be day-to-day mundane tasks such as collecting forensic evidence, checking background records, interviewing witnesses, and testifying in court. Police detectives are of course categorized into many department specialties. Robbery and burglary alone accounts for a very large portion of police detective work.
Correctional Officers and Jailers
Well, that's pretty self-explanatory, isn't it? You'll be responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates, whether they have been arrested and are awaiting trial or have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in jail. A prison or jail is a controlled environment which in many ways is a microcosm of a society, with it's own challenges to face. While the controlled environment of the jail or prison will seem a more secure niche, unexpected surprises can develop - particularly in the intake zone. And when things get out of hand in a prison, they tend to escalate quickly.

You'll of course need to combine your criminal justice degree with a computer science degree. Crimes committed through or with a computer may include fraud, offensive content, harassment and hate groups, drug trafficking, and cyberterrorism. If you imagined computer viruses or email scams were perpetrated by individual kids, think again: Computer fraud and data theft is actually an international organized crime operation and a multi-billion dollar per year industry! Police departments also need forensic data analysts on hand to find and recover evidence which may be on a suspect's computer and may have been encrypted or deleted. In the future, a special department may be created within the criminal justice system to deal with this special category, as currently many police departments have to outsource their computer-related
The role of correctional officers are to maintain security and control within the penitentiary and the immediate surrounding perimeter to ensure safety of the public and inmates. Criminal investigators can take courses in criminal justice that cover criminal procedures, the correct way to collect evidence and the laws that govern the process. It's the same course that a police officer would take to join the force. There are courses in constitutional law, profiling and systems of law enforcement along with

The United States justice system is a complicated system. The justice system is the third branch of the government. This branch holds the responsibility to create and up hold laws. The justice system has a precise order of how things fall into place when a crime has been committed. The process to arrest an individual to the sentencing of that individual takes a bountiful amount of steps and procedures.

Seeing that both Criminal Justice and Social Work are career fields that require one to be hands-on, there are numerous amount of internships to enable me to gain the experience in order to be effective. After graduation, obtaining different jobs may vary in
In any type of law enforcement job, most likely you will see murders, people badly injured, and sometimes irrelevant things that can be resolved on their own. In criminal justice you will definitely see many court cases, and you may even be assigned jury duty, therefore you need to be able to understand the court system. Lastly, what may seem morally right to you is not always legally right. For example if someone you know got away with murder and you think they deserve to be dead as well then it may seem right to you to kill them out of anger, but to the law they wouldn’t care. The law would just see you as a murder and criminal.
As a Probation and Parole Officer, my duties is to enforce the law but primary is to help individuals with social resources so they can become productive member of society. Police Officers serve an integral role in the criminal justice system, and their duty is to arrest individuals and bring them up on charges. If the individual is adjudicated in court, then the individual enters the Delaware Correctional system. Every individual will be placed in their correct supervision level as set forth by SENTAC and sentencing order.

President Obama himself has stated that there has been a growth in jobs opportunities in such fields. Due to the ceaseless nature of crime, there may never be an end to the demand for police officers and criminal investigators along with forensic scientists who aid them in their cases. As other fields begin to diminish, the criminal justice field continues to grow along with science and medicine. These fields are consistently battling everyday issues such as epidemics, scientific breakthroughs and terrorism both in and out of the country. The economy has provided me with the ability to pursue a career that is in demand and that I am passionate about.

“Correction officers supervise convicted offenders when they are in jail, in prison, or in the community on probation or parole” (National Center for Victims of Crime, 2008). When a defendant is found guilty, they are usually sentenced to time in jail, houses of correction, prisons, probation, or parole. When they are sentenced to time in prison, it is the responsibility of corrections and their officers to ensure that the defendant is treated humanely. It is also their job to make sure that the correctional facility that is holding the offender is safe and secure.
Providing legal assistance in a helpful and effective way is something I am very passionate about. As a third year Legal Studies and History student at the University of Wisconsin - Madison I have spent a lot of time closely analyzing legal issues to find satisfactory solutions. I think I am a good candidate for the UW Law School’s Wisconsin Innocence Project internship because I have a desire to learn and understand the law through close observation and because I have experience navigating customer service and interpersonal interactions in a responsive and positive manner. Through my experiences studying Legal Studies, History, and Criminal Justice I have acquired an interest in pursuing law post-graduation. In doing this coursework as well as maintaining membership of the UW-Madison Pre-Law Society for 2.5 years I have been exposed to a variety of different types of law, but through my focus on criminal
