Fear is the most terrifying thing in this world and the Puritan society had used this fear for so long against their people, government, and everyday life. There are many things that they can use fear in everyday life no matter who you are. The most common fear they used is one of many things that many people know today and that is hell. So come and learn a little bit about how fear was used in Puritan society. There are many stories that tell you about Puritan society having fear in it and the fear in Puritan society can also be found in history.

The journey of the New World began with the puritans, who did not agree with the church of england so they decided to develop the massachusetts bay colony. Salem is a Puritan community, and its occupants live in an extremely strict society. Government and religious authority are virtually inseparable, and the individuals who question the local authority are accused of questioning divine authority. The Puritan community considers physical labor and strict discipline to be a religious doctrine which is the best indicators of faithfulness, honesty, and integrity.

The Puritans created a religiously repressive society that greatly influenced the overall development of New England. Although their society revolved around the church, were all of their beliefs detrimental to the evolution of the colony? Regarding New England’s social development, the Puritans’ stress on community, family and education was advantageous because it caused the region to thrive with more families and small towns. Therefore, since Puritans were more likely to come to the New World’s families instead of individuals, New England had significantly more families settle there than in other regions of colonization. About 124 years ago today, an important woman arrived at our colony, her name was Anne Hutchinson. She was one of our founders and a significant figure, not only known in this colony. Anne had a different interpretation of the Bible, this was against the Puritan rule in Massachusetts, and that’s why she was exiled to Rhode Island. While she lived in Massachusetts, Anne was recognized for holding church meetings in her own home. This was because of the way she interpreted the Bible.

Almost every Sunday morning you could find most of the population of Salem village in church. By 1692 denominations such as Presbyterians, Baptist, Quakers, Huguenots, and Anglicans had come to Massachusetts, but most of the people in Salem attended a Congregational service and called themselves Puritans. The Puritans, also known as Nonconformists, held a service each Sunday and were very traditional and set in their ways. The meeting house was set up with a pulpit at the front where the minister gave a sermon to the congregation each Sunday. The ministers of these churches were expected to be well educated and were paid with tax money in most of the cities in Massachusetts.

In the 1500s, the Protestant Reformation swept through England and caused people like John Calvin to make up their own religions. Henry VIII made the Anglicanism the official religion of England, and any dissenters, even dissenters who belonged to the Church of England, were persecuted. Puritans were some of these dissenters, and they migrated to the New World seeking religious freedom, a place to live the way they believed was pleasing to God. As the Puritans' lives were shaped by their religion, so too did their religious values and ideas influence the political, social, and economic development of the New England colonies. They valued piety, courage, and industry. If they lacked piety, the Puritans would have also lacked the faith and trust required for them to believe they could be successful in this New World. Without courage, they might have been too scared to leave England in search of a new land where they wouldn 't have to face persecution for their beliefs. If they had not valued industry, they might not have worked hard enough to survive in the conditions they had to endure on their long journey. The Puritans influenced the development of the New England colonies, including Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, and Connecticut through the Puritans’ extreme theological values and ideas that create the theocracy, their hard work ethic that increases their economic stability, and their resistance to tolerate other’s different opinions.

More than 80% of Americans have Puritan ancestors who emigrated to Colonial America on the Mayflower, and other ships, in the 1630’s (“Puritanism”). Puritanism had an early start due to strong main beliefs that, when challenged, caused major conflict like the Salem Witch Trials. Puritanism had an extremely rocky beginning, starting with a separation from the Roman Catholic Church. Starting in 1606, a group of villagers in Scrooby, England left the church of England and formed a congregation called the Separatist Church, and the members were called The puritans (“Pilgrims”).

One of the founding beliefs shared by the early Puritans in the Massachusetts Bay Colony was that they should be role model to all like “a city on a hill” (Evans 21). This belief was shared heavily among the Puritans that came to New England and it can be seen through their beliefs and attitudes. Puritanism was one of the first European religions in America and it has withstood many difficulties in its own way. New England Puritanism had strengths such as a strong work ethic and commitment to self-sufficiency, but was also characterized by strict religious beliefs and intolerance of other religions, which led to the persecution of groups like the Quakers. Seeking to reform and purify the Church of England, the Puritans migrated to New England to build an ideal Christian colony. In the beginning of the Puritan colonization in America, John Winthrop confronted many challenges. With difficult problems repeatedly arising, Winthrop was able to overcome them, as governor and leader, by approval of many. Migrating as families to New England, the Puritans felt compelled to battle the world’s impurities. Winthrop knew England was under the shadow of God’s wrath with all of the corruption of the government.

In the Scarlet Letter, Hester faces discrimination based on the beliefs about her “crime”-- adultery. In today’s society, people see homelessness as a “crime”, often stereotyping the homeless by associating them with drugs and mental illness. Both adulterers in Puritan society and the homeless in today’s society experience discrimination and undergo the feeling of isolation as a result of being different from normal society. In today’s society, many people discriminate the homeless, much like how Puritan society ostracizes Hester.

The Puritans were the ones to find the New England Colonies. The Puritans got that title because they were trying to purify the Anglican church. The Puritans believed that by settling in the Americas their life would be better.

According to Thomas Brooks, "Sin in a wicked man is like poison in a serpent; it is in its natural place. " Many can argue that the Puritan democracy was very corrupt. Stephen Foster, the author of the essay, “Puritanism and Democracy: A Mixed Legacy” states, “New Englanders admitted that no man could read the law of nature alright, that all men were equally corrupt.” Because of this corruptness, Puritans struggled to create a democracy, never viewed others as equals, and even after trying to create a democratic government, they acted as hypocrites.
