The Purpose of Group Debates
When individuals gather and exchange their opinions, ideas, and information about matters of interest, it is considered group discussion. Group discussions are when opinions and views can be spoken of freely, but when such a variety of opinions and views are presented, it is likely that conflicts and debates can arise in the midst of it all. When group debates occur, each debater counters the points of the other debaters by stating their position and argument about the matter. Typically, once opinions, views, and different ideas are presented, other’s thoughts can be influenced, but when debating, it is important for the speakers to stay true to their position and influence the opposing side and the audience. When one puts in so much effort to make effective and strong points and arguments, debaters can get very sensitive. Debaters can get offended when their points are countered, especially if they feel like the audience is pulling away from them. Similar to this, debaters can get emotional about certain topics that they step out from being professionalism when the conversation gets tense. Debates cause conflict, and although this is normal, it can be a huge drawback for the ones presenting arguments on topics that they are passionate about. Another drawback from debates is that it can be harder to come to a reasonable solution; it is one side wins and the other side loses. Debates are back and forth between strong opinions and views, and ultimately the solution depends on the audience to judge the most persuasive side. Being passionate about things, especially debatable topics can actually be seen as a benefit as well, but when one feels offended, provoked, or inadequate, there can be drawbacks to debating, especially when the solution is voted on instead of collectively

Sandra Fluke’s opinion over this matter has impacted many people and she has, by some means, persuaded numerous people to agree with her opinion on this argument. On the other hand, Limbaugh lost many advertisers and suffered a major loss on his radio talk show. Duffy states how important it is to know how to speak in well-manner style in an argument if you want to accurately get your message across. The author states that college students need to know how to act in a mature manner when having an argument about a certain topic. Duffy talks about how students should have the capability to understand that when confronting an argument there must be evidence to back up the argument.
When it comes to arguments, debates, and anything else, you must do and say tailored things in order to show your point or justify how you're right. Comparable to the debate during the 1980 US presidential election, the two candidates, current President Jimmy Carter and California Governor Ronald Reagan, participated in a debate over how they would address inflation if elected, and they did so to persuade the public to vote for them in the election. In the debate, Ronald Reagan had a better argument because of what he said and how he said it. Firstly, in the debate about inflation, Ronald Reagan had a more compelling argument because he used evidence in the form of statistics.

This is due to a shared distaste for a gotcha, big-headed, and win at all costs discourse. The competition, while creating a certain drive amongst individuals, can not come at the expense of honesty and due process. Tannen is correct in that the NEED to win requires “scholars to (1) at best oversimplify, at worst distort or even misrepresent others’ positions; (2) search for the most foolish statement and the weakest examples to make a generally reasonable treaties appear less so; and (3) ignore facts that support the opponent’s views and cite only those that support theirs.” A form of competition/debate, I believe, without these flaws would be the most desirable - I am aware that due to the length of this essay I have committed to some extent all these, therefore making me somewhat of a hypocrite - in creating an environment that allows scholars and students alike to advance humanity's
In spite of this, they do not necessarily agree on what the most important issue is with education. Nonetheless, it all boils down to this: our educational system is flawed and it must be examined and re-evaluated by teachers and administration in order to best serve our democratic arrangement; it is necessary that the argumentative culture be disbanded and that we focus on creating opportunities for students to flourish through a civic education. Everyone has their own opinions on different topics. Some arguments may be more clear than others, but they exist. Some debates on arguments should end, but people always find a way to argue the other side. For example the argument on student debt has been going for a long time. To many, student debt should be eliminated, which makes sense in order to improve our economy.
In the Introduction, Jay Heinrichs provides the reader with a foundation about the upcoming concepts on rhetoric, persuasion, seduction, and argument used in our everyday lives and in writing. Throughout this section, he discusses rhetoric that he encounters throughout life and without rhetoric it is merely impossible. He tries to go through a non rhetorical day, but it turns “out to be pretty darn rhetorical, but nonetheless agreeable” (11). Rhetoric prevents fighting, because without an agreement, people use fighting as a way of arguing. So, although people may see rhetoric as manipulation and/or seduction, it provides an agreement, within an otherwise violent, aggravating argument.
The similarity is that in each of these scenarios: the stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong. In short, these are crucial conversations. As we do our best to deal with these crucial conversations, we often toggle between two ends of a rather unhealthy continuum. We often hold things inside by going silent until we can take it no longer - and then we burst out by attacking others’ ideas and feelings. I believe that, yes it would have an adverse effect on a presidential election because the more debates a democratic party or republican party has means that the public and other party members have time to learn about the candidates and the issues that candidate supports. For example if a person like Donald trump which is on the republican party goes outside to a lot of debates and shows he’s not afraid he could outshine his competition in debates and even win more votes over the democratic party that has its main runner Hillary Clinton at a disadvantage with less debate time. Yes debates influence candidate selection during elations because the person decided who to vote for knows the side they want, and they know what that candidate thinks
Structure like this in classrooms only validates that students are able to argue but, diminishes the opportunities of creating values to the scholarly work and voicing out from the side that share the same opinion as the author. This leads to academic rewards for these arguing students as suggested by Deborah Tannen, leaving the rest to believe that they are not good enough for the academia. Based on personal experience, I would like to add that such agonism demotivates students to explore knowledge outside of their field and creates an impression that they are never meant to explore topics that they are least expert at. This structure has to be reshaped to bring back the original goals of criticizing work so that there is a value for everyone in the
To make a significant change in the world, countless hours of preparation, of work, and proactive cooperation with others are crucial for success. I partake in few extra-curricular activities, but I have dedicated years of my life to them all. On a regular week, I have to balance French club and National French Honor Society secretary duties, community service for National Honor Society, and additional choir practice for at least two hours after school each week (while sometimes performing community service with the choir as well). I want to become an engineer; so I take AP classes that are useful and interest me because I will need to know advanced math and science concepts in college. All of these extra-curricular activities and academics will become even more relevant when it is time for me to advance my future goals of pursuing a higher education and making significant efforts to aid the world by designing helpful technology with medical applications.
i. // DEFINITION OF CONFLICT // What exactly is conflict? We might often find ourselves being confused to stumble upon questions like these. Conflict has various meanings, according to Google, conflict comes in both noun and verb forms. As a noun, conflict means a serious disagreement, typically a one that lasts for quite a long period of time. However, as a verb, conflict means being incompatible, at variance and also, clash.
Throughout the past ten years, social media has increasingly become a phenomenon all over the world. In the United States alone, 81% of the population owns some sort of social media account (“Percentage of U.S. population”). With this increasing number, social media has reached an extremely large audience in which resulted in a melting pot of diverse discussions on daily topics. Due to this enormous audience, one must be quite cautious about what they share online. These platforms have become a useful tool that may result in real-life consequences if used in an inefficient way.
Homework is an on-going topic of debate that has been being questioned for decades. In my opinion, I don’t think that homework is essential to students due to the effect it has on your mental and eventually your physical health and it is starting to affect their school life. Is the amount of work we get actually helpful to students? Is it too much for students? How is homework affecting my child?
