Script Although English 1A was just a little part of my high school journey, I believe that it had a prominent impact on my abilities and on me as a student overall. I discovered my love for reading and writing again. I never genuinely liked writing before but after this English class my writing skills have grown and I have found how expressing yourself with words can be so valuable. From reading, I learned lessons that I may have never learned unless I had experienced them. I got to learn from others' mistakes and grow as a person. Every book that I have read in this class had an impact on me and my skills as a reader. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros expresses many themes

Some examples are the themes of prejudice and racial inequity. In this book, we can see many examples of prejudice and racism especially in Tom Robinson's court case and his horrifying death. This quote by Atticus highlights how it will truly never be possible for courts to not view and judge the color of someone's skin. "The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury …show more content…
This story follows the two main characters George and Lenny throughout their journey, they share a deep bond and a friendship that wasn't very common for two men back then amidst the difficulties and struggles of the Great Depression. We can see this unbreakable bond in friendship described in these two quotes "I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you."-Lennie “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world... but not us"-George
The theme that inspired me greatly was perseverance. We can see the theme of perseverance throughout all the books we have read. In The House on Mango Street Esperanza has to persevere through all of her challenges and the hardships that she faces. In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus knows that there's little to no chance of him being able to win the case yet he still perseveres to make this case the strongest as possible to give Tom Robinson the little fighting chance he has. The Odyssey has one of the most prominent themes of perseverance out of all the books we've read. Odysseus never once thinks about giving up because he wants to go home so badly. He inspires his crew members to keep on persevering and move no matter how many challenges they face. In the end, Odysseus does reach his goal after lots of hard work. In Romeo and Juliet both the lovers persevere to be with
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Scout receives her call to her quest after Atticus takes on the rape case against Tom Robinson. As Atticus’ daughter, Scout becomes involved in the initiative effects of Atticus taking on the case which begins an individual call for Scout. “I’m simply defending a Negro-his name’s Tom Robinson. He lives in that little settlement beyond the town dump.” This quote stated by Atticus provides for specific insight to the instance when it is first formally introduced that Atticus took up the case.
#1 QUOTATION “Jem had probably stood as much guff about Atticus lawing for (black people) as had I, and I took it for granted that he kept his temper.” (Lee,136). #2 CONTEXT The context behind this quote is that Mrs. Dubose makes fun of Scout, Jem, and
In both The Odyssey by Homer and The Golden Ass by Apuleius, struggling is an important aspect. Both Odysseus from The Odyssey and Lucius from The Golden Ass undergo strenuous journeys in order to achieve their goals. Due to Odysseus’ struggles during his journey and his desire to reunite with his family, he can be seen to have experienced more personal suffering than Lucius, who actually benefited from his disguise allowing to fulfill his curiosity. Odysseus leaves Ithaca to fight in the Trojan War leaving his beloved wife, Penelope and their newborn son behind.
The Odyssey Theme Squib In Homer's epic, The Odyssey, Perseverance is an important, and over-arching subject in the story. Odysseus & Thought Odysseus have never been the kind not to persevere. Perseverance is the bed rock of the story. Odysseus, throughout the story has gone through hard ship, over and over again.
Evidence from story and context Commentary/Analysis Textual Reference: “Jem was suddenly furious. He leaped off the bed, grabbed me by the collar and shook me” (Lee 283). Context: Scout brings up the courthouse, and Jem gets angry and tells her to get out.
Importance of Details Kathreen Perez 1)Interesting Traxler, 3 Chapter 20 detail: -The whole county thinks that Mr. Raymond drinks whiskey, but he is actually drinking coca-cola in a bag. During the 1930's, racism raged through every corner of the United States, and the imaginary district of Maycomb County displayed the effects of injustice brought upon the African-American community during that time period.
Bravery in the Wisdom Do you remember when you were a kid and everything seemed terrifying, but as you got older you became braver the more you knew? To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel during The Great Depression that follows the Finch family's experiences. In her novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jem Finch, appears to readers as a frightened boy, but throughout the novel, as Jem experiences many terrifying moments and many different adult-like scenarios, he begins to lose his childlike “brave” actions, showing how experience in different scenarios help develop a braver older mindset.
It is in the face of grave danger that Odysseus thrives, he overcomes the obstacles by tackling the forces of nature that try to oppress his spirit. Repetition is also commonplace in The Odyssey, as illustrated in part one of the epic poem. Specifically, the poem reads, “seeing this ghost I grieved
Throughout our reading from, “To Kill A Movkingbird” we as readers learn more about Atticus and who he is as a character. Atticus is one of the characters that we have learned the most about. Atticus in the novel, is the father of Jem and Scout Finch. On page 118 of, “ To Kill A Mockingbird” it states, “He did not do the things our schoolmates’ did: he never went hunting, he did not play poker, or fish or drink or smoke. We had readers can see from this quote that Atticus is a very enlightened father and how he concentrates in important things in life such as his children and job.
Quote and page # Paragraph "'Your father does not know how to teach. You can have a seat now.' I mumbled that I was sorry and retired meditating upon my crime." (Question) page: 2 In this quote it seems like it is very interesting.
Success and Happiness Through Perseverance In order to achieve a happy and successful life, both The Odyssey and “Ulysses” show that perseverance is the most important quality to possess in life because one can accomplish missions and pursue passions. Some may believe that perseverance is only used to get through troubles and does not result in happiness, but in The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus perseveres through many trials to accomplish is mission. As Odysseus is preparing his men to sail past the Sirens, he states, “what death we baffle if we can” (723). To put it differently, Odysseus is saying that he and his men must survive at all costs in order to complete their goal.
The theme of perseverance is one that stretches across the wide spectrum of genres when it comes to literature and film. Romance, horror, adventure, even cartoons/graphic novels all contain the element of heroic perseverance over blockades restricting the tale’s equilibrium. In The Odyssey we see Odysseus must overcome a tremendous amount of trials to make it home to his wife and son. The quantity of trials that Odysseus must face would be far too much for a normal man, but not heroic Odysseus. He battles and outsmarts a host of fiends including Polyphemus, the sirens, Scylla and Charybdis (twice), and even the underworld itself.
Jem is Shaped and Influenced by Society Jem, Scout's brother, from To Kill A Mockingbird is shaped and influenced by his society around him. Jem lives in the small town of Maycomb which is deeply rooted in racial injustices. Jem is initially unaware of the racial division but quickly sees the harsh reality of the world. Jem tells Scout, “There are just some kind of men who-who’re so busy worrying about the next world they’ve never learned to live in this one” (Chapter 23).
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee creates the characters by pulling traits of people in her daily life. Atticus, Scout’s dad in the book, is a perfect example of one of these characters because he relates to Harper Lee’s father, Amasa Coleman(A.C.) Lee. In chapter 1 of the book, it says, “… yet the tradition of living in the land remained unbroken until well into the twentieth century, when my father, Atticus Finch, went to Montgomery to read law… ”(page 4-5). This quotation connects to Harper Lee’s father because he was also a lawyer, according to Scott Stabler.
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee three main quotes that teaches both Jem and Scout life lessons are “until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (33) , “it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird” (103), and “Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them” (323). These quotes are simple yet have a deep hidden meaning behind it that takes a lot of thinking that both Scout and Jem have to learn that they can’t just assume things about people without really knowing them, and that you are not allowed to destroy an innocent person that has done nothing to you. In the scene the quote “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (33) mainly
