Racism against Black People in the United States Amal Mohamed Qatar University Racism against Black People in the U. S Fifty years ago, a black American woman named Rosa Parks refused to leave her seat on a bus she was riding on her way to her home in Montgomery, Alabama, in the United States after finishing a busy day working as a tailor. The Jim Crow laws in the States at the time stipulated that blacks pay the ticket price from the front door, board the bus from the back door, and sit in the back seats, while the whites have the front seats. It's even one of the rights of the driver order the black seated passengers to leave their seats in order to be seated by a white person. That day, Parks deliberately didn't give up her seat to one of the white passengers and insisted on her position, simply refusing to give up her right to sit on the seat she chose. The driver summoned police officers who arrested her for violating the law. The incident had a major impact on fueling the feelings of blacks against injustice and racial discrimination. Blacks boycotted the buses for a year. The case was brought to the highest constitutional body in the United States, and the trial lasted 381 days. In the end, the court came out with its ruling, which supported …show more content…
If the United States is to become serious about tackling racism against blacks in their society, the American government should play a significant role by eliminating all the racial laws, educate people more about the effects of racism and racial discrimination on the general and psychological health of people of color, and the most important thing is to stop police
Addressing police brutality must be done with empathy for and awareness of the plight of the African-American community. Historically speaking, there has not been a period wherein the African-American community was not inhibited by institutionalized barriers. American enslavement provided the foundation for later oppressive provisions that are especially prevalent within inner-city, predominantly Black communities, which, incidentally, many of the prominent instances of police brutality have taken place. Political regimes like the “war on drugs,” “school to prison pipeline,” and mass incarceration criminalize and dehumanize the African-American community, and thus affect the collective mindset of the population. I believe that an imperative first step that has not been taken is acknowledging the effects these may have on the Black community.
The Civil rights movement began for African-Americas to end racial segregation and discrimination. A movement that would take years, lives and pride of many to make each African-American equal to white men. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King go down in history for becoming the lead voice of the civil rights movement. Rosa Parks was arrest for non-compliance with bus segregation laws, although it was a seat she has paid for. It was known for black women to sit in the back of the bus and to give up their seat for white women/men.
Rosa Parks, an African American who suffered Jim Crow said, "Time begins the healing process of wounds cut deeply by oppression. We soothe ourselves with the salve of attempted indifference, accepting the false pattern set up by the horrible restriction of Jim Crow laws" (BrainyQuote). She is talking about people from her race at the time, oppressed deeply by these laws. A white person was forcing her to move seats to the back after an exhausting day. Jim Crow Laws were the reason that the white people were made the superior race.
Come to a mass meeting, Monday at 7:00 P.M., at the Holt Street Baptist Church for further instruction.” Due to the fact that over seventy-five percent of bus riders were African Americans, the bus company lost over $750,000: over seven million dollars today. Many African Americans carpooled or walked when they needed to travel. The participaters in the boycott persisted though peaceful protesting, demonstrating the power peaceful protests had. Eventually, King had come up with three things that he would show to the city commissioners, “the black citizens of the city would not return to the buses until: courteous treatment by the bus operators was guaranteed; passengers were seated on a first-come, first-served basis; and black bus operators were employed on predominantly black routes.”
Right before the start of the boycott, Rosa Parks famously refused to give her seat up to a white man on a bus (http://ow.ly/Yuqbq) .This shows how something as simple as not using public buses can help one gain
For instance, in Alabama, buses were segregated in which the whites sat in the front, while the colored sat in the back. On December 1, 1955, an African-American woman named, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery bus. For not obeying, she was arrested and fined. Additionally, in May, Gonzalo Curiel, the presiding judge over a class action against the for-profit Trump University was degraded by President Donald Trump saying that he can’t do his job right because of his Mexican heritage. Trump said that he is “going to build a wall between here and Mexico”.
Systemic Racism in the United States Many individuals today have different point of views on how the United States of America became what it is today. For instance, point of views such as how society learned to function the way it does, the law and order in place, and ultimately, how circumstances have developed throughout history. Unfortunately, institutional/institutionalized racism, also known as systemic racism is also a concept that has settled and is grown to be quite predominant in the United States all through times past. Systemic racism continues to take place in settings such as banks, courts of law, government organizations, school systems, and the like.
Racism is an evil act that can destroy a society. The U.S is a nation of immigrants and, as such, it is a diverse society where racism has no place. In the past few years police officers in America have been discriminating against the black community. Police officers are meant to protect the public, not cause further damage and stress. They use over excessive force towards black people, target minorities and abuse their power.
After Rosa parks refused to give her seat to white passenger and was arrested. The black people decided to launch a boycott. It denoted all of African Americans walked instead of riding a bus. The boycotters hoped the bus companies would lose money and be forced to abandon their segregation policy. After a year bus boycott, a unit state’s District Court ruling in Browder V. Gayle banned racial segregation on all Montgomery public buses.
Gantt Torres Mr. Miller English I 8 December 2017 Claudette Colvin Did you know that Rosa Parks was not the first person to protest on a bus? There were many other people who protested too. Claudette Colvin was an African-American teenager who sat in the front of a bus where only white people were supposed to sit; but her civil rights protest actually happened nine months before the more famous protest of Rosa Parks, which led to the end of segregation. Unfortunately, Claudette Colvin will not be remembered for being the first one to sit in the front of the bus and to this day, she remains disappointed for not getting enough credit for her protest (Mullins).
The relationship between race and racism is due to the fact that there are racial categories created, in order for particular social groups to be on top of the hierarchy. For example, the white group, which is on top of this racial hierarchy, established the notion of race in order to benefit themselves, which has led to racism among other minority groups. The ideology of a group being superior than others leads to racism. Ultimately, race is the product of racism, and racism is not the product of race (25).

When Rosa Parks got an arrest, it had started a resolution. When Rosa didn't get up from her seat for a white man, the driver called the police and arrested her. So at her court date, the African Americans had started a boycott. The Africans have to seat in the back of the bus in the colored section. Because Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man; she started a revolution and the fight for equal rights for black people.
