Definition Essay: What's Racism?

Racism has been around for a long time and it still exists today. It has been embedded to a degree that it reproduces itself. It is in the culture of the future generation. What is seen and taught to us in our environment is how we learn our behavior and actions towards others. Because of this, whether we realize it or not, racist behavior is taught and passed on.

Throughout the world racism happens daily, making others feel badly about themselves because of ignorant people. As a matter of fact we cannot choose the color of our skin, we cannot choose the way we look, but we can choose how we act towards others. Racism compels conformity to the majority culture by discrimination against other ethnicities on the premise that their cultural beliefs and identifications are inferior. It goes against the inclusion and even the safety of different races, destroying any possible benefits of diversity. Racism is a man-made creation, where people judge others based on the color of their skin and not on the important things, such as a person’s personality. Authors Hubert Harrison, James Baldwin, and Ta-Nehisi Coates told their beliefs and stories about growing up African American in different time periods. In the works Race Prejudice II, Letter to My Nephew, and Between the World and Me, the American authors use their perspectives on racism to show how white people have been destroying black bodies and don't want to know what they are doing.

Racism is a part of American history that can never be forgotten; a dark past that shows the constant mistreatment of African-Americans. Although African-Americans were freed from slavery in the 1860’s, discrimination continues to be seen today. The white supremacy woven into mainstream American culture led to the continued widespread exclusion of African-Americans.

Racism occurs when a minority group is defined, negative characteristics are associated with them, and they are kept at a disadvantage to others. This means people of a society made up race without any real backing or evidence to do so. One’s race is based mostly on their physical characteristics like skin color or hair type, or lineage.

There are many ideas thrown around as to how racism began though the truth lies in the history of mankind. Before people were able to travel and experience difference groups of people we predominantly stayed in the same kind of area with the same kind of people. We feared things that were different and were lacked the power to face those kinds of things. All this changed once we did in fact obtain this level of human advancement but the fear never drifted. The truth is racism began as soon as people faced those of different races.

Racism is one of the darkest, deepest and disgusting social issues of the world, existing throughout the history of mankind. It is a social construct created by humans to categorise the world. Racism is learned, we are not born with it. The most traditional form of this is discrimination based on one’s skin colour.
