The introduction of They Say, I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein outlines the basic template of the authors’ approach to rhetorical writing. The central template the book focuses on is “they say, I say”, as the title suggests. This technique requires the writer to assess and evaluate the author’s argument and paraphrase it in his or her own words. Then, the writer must respond to the argument with her own stance, provide evidence, and formulate an opinion. By going through this process, the writer is forced to think critically and read closely, improving not only their own opinion, but also a better understanding of the original piece and the original author’s ideas.

In the tale Gorgias by Plato, Socrates debates with four colleagues on what is rhetoric. To be able to answer if rhetoric is based on nature or convention you must first ask the question, what is rhetoric? Rhetoric stated by Socrates is the skill of making speeches (448d). Gorgias states that rhetoricians have the power of persuasions (452e). Rhetoric is having the power to persuade people in changing their opinion threw the power of speeches.

In Quintilian’s book called “Institutio Oratoria”, is basically a series of twelve books that present the practices of rhetoric in the ancient Roman world. Quintilian agrees that the rhetoric education of an orator begins as a young boy. This shows that Quintilian does not recognize women in his definition of student and man throughout the texts. The first parts of the book discuss the basics of pedagogical rhetoric. Even though the text is largely based on the practice and theory of rhetoric, Quintilian also discusses a number of aspects of pedagogical development in the context of the early roman culture.

Thank You for Arguing is a popular substitute textbooks for upper level English classes written by Jay Heinrichs, a journalist that has taught the art of persuasion to numerous Ivy League schools, the Pentagon, and even NASA. In attempt to restore that art of persuasion, Heinrichs submerges the modern world into the ancient realm of persuasion in the most entertaining way possible. Based on the teachings of Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson, this clever approach to teachings displays the best of rhetoric through the eyes of the twenty-first century. Despite other unique methods, Heinrichs primarily utilizes anecdotes to convey various techniques which is best displayed in Chapter 21: Lead Your Tribe.

Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion by Jay Heinrichs is a splendidly woven book that teaches people how to become rhetorical. Heinrichs spent many years working with the art of rhetorical persuasion. Even though he is a husband, father, teacher, and author, he always finds time to perfect his persuasion skills. Heinrichs’s main strategies which he uses constantly throughout the book are his backstories and examples; with that, his best chapter is Chapter nine: Control the Mood, and I believe this book should be used in college as ENGL 1301 study guides to help students get a better idea on the art of persuasion. Jay Heinrichs’s book, Thank You For Arguing, gives several techniques on how to become a more rhetorical and/or persuasive person.

Grant-Davie describes thoroughly the term rhetorical situation and how the development of the definition and its constituents has contributed to the discovery of the motives and responses behind any discourse. The analysis of rhetorical situations could determine the outer or inner influences of the rhetors, the audience, and their particular constraints. Grant Davie supports his claims by using the earlier definitions of scholars and teachers as his foundation. He also addresses his own analysis drawn by life experienced discourses which it also helps the reader understand the causes of rhetorical situations. This is important because it teaches any writer or reader to analyze a situation and think about the options and paths it could lead

Rhetorical strategies are a variety of parts that make up an essay. The strategies include everything from explaining a process, to structure of writing. Whether the author 's purpose is to entertain, inform, or persuade, ultimately these strategies will strengthen not only the author’s purpose, but also the writing itsef. Typically when authors use these strategies, they are very precise to how they use them, and when deeply analysing a piece of writing, this is very clear. In Bell Hooks’ “Understanding Patriarchy”, she used rhetorical strategies to convey her purpose.

Tragedies, they will happen without a hint of awareness but they cannot be stopped or answered for. When they do occur it leads people to shock and grief. However tragedies brings forth something that gives people unity, hope, and direction. This something is called a leader and throughout history many people have embodied this quality. There are many instances where people have stood up an embodied this quality.

Briefcases: Steps toward Rhetorical Analysis”, Carroll describes the need for rhetorical analysis to assist in decoding the purpose and intent behind a cornucopia of the situation we faced daily. She elucidates the subject by describing the steps that we need to effectively to do it. She points out how we analyze people around us by making quickly a conclusion to the person that we are analyzing. As a student, it is important that we use Rhetorical Analysis as a strategy to communicate effectively.

Reading chapter 3, Sonja Foss, outlines four weaknesses of the neo-Aristotelian method of rhetorical criticism. She writes that this method assumes that the primary role of a rhetorical critic is that of a teacher or practitioner, this method overemphasizes the importance of the immediate, short-term effects of the selected artifact, this method overemphasizes the importance of rational appeals, and this method encourages an overly mechanical approach to criticism, in which critical concepts are applied indiscriminately to all rhetorical artifacts in cookie-cutter fashion.
