Reasons For Abigail To Blame For The Crucible

Abigail is responsible because she lied about everything. Abigail lied to her uncle Reverend Hale about doing ungodly things in the woods. She continues to lie to the whole town about committing adultery with John Proctor. She threatens the servants with their life if they tell on her.

So she says. Abigail is the most responsible for the hysteria and the reason many innocent people are being hung to their death. Abigail goes to the woods to drink blood to curse Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail was the Proctors servant. Elizabeth found out about to adultery her and John have been doing and fired her.

The Crucible’s Sins Puritans were very religious during the year 1692. A small town in Massachusetts called Salem was popular for their witch trials. The only way to determine if a person was a witch is if they committed the some of the seven sins: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth. Envy, gluttony, and greed were desires for other people’s things. Thomas Putnam was a character that always wanted people’s land.

While she was working for the Proctors Elizabeth was to sick and she only cared about herself and John seduced her and taught her bad habits for later in life. Even though she did not have good role models she still had the choice to tell the truth and not have blamed other people in the town to help support her lie. In conclusion, Abigail Williams is the one to blame for the deaths even though she has not had any good role models because she had more than one chance to tell the truth.

Abigail, along with a band of other girls, accuses several people of witchcraft, whom are then sentenced to hang without a just trial. It seems as though Abigail governs the entire town, and when people attempt to go against her word, they are either hanged or surrender fighting for what is right and take her side. Abigail seems to have absolute power, but her evil is not committed without dire consequences at hand. No evil is ever committed without consequences. Abigail demonstrates this through showing that the evil she has committed whisks away innocent lives, but it also results in John Proctor’s death, which is her goal to begin with.

These readers obviously don't understand the hardships young Abigail faced and the people responsible for her trials. Not only did growing up with her wicked and greedy uncle influence her, but Abigail was also influenced by her love for an older man. This man, John Proctor, not only committed the unforgivable crime of adultery, but also took advantage of a young girl. Abigail lived at the Proctor residence to learn the basics of motherhood and running a family. During this time, John Proctor took advantage of Abigail’s need for love.

Though there were many people who contributed to what happened in Salem, I believe that Abigail Williams was mostly to blame. I think this because she lied to save herself, made up false scenarios and blamed innocent people, and enjoyed the attention and power. In the beginning of the play, Abby is caught dancing in the woods. She herself drank a blood charm in which she wanted to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Though Abby wasn’t the only one who was caught, she lied to Reverend Parris so that she would not be hung once witchcraft was being talked about throughout the village.

Abigail seems like an innocent girl to everybody however it is later found out that she is one of the people who puts herself before others and makes things worse to get herself out of trouble. In act one Reverend Hale was questioning Tituba, a slave from Barbados. Tituba was explaining what the dancing and the disturbance in the woods and Abigail says she “wasn’t conjuring spirits”(Miller ??)

Abigail blamed Tituba for witchcraft because Abigail did not want the blame and Tituba was an easy scapegoat since she is black. Abigail yelled at Paris, “She made me do it! She made Betty do it!”(1.905). This is just one of the victims of Abigail scapegoating. The main purpose, scapegoating, occurred more than vengeance did.

Betty even said that Abigail “…drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor”(Miller 1137)! All Abigail ever wanted was Proctor. I think Abigail is definitely the one to blame in The Crucible. Abigail Williams is the one to blame for the innocent deaths because of the lies she told, the accusations she made, and the affair she had with John Proctor.

In a small village called Salem, witchcraft and sorcery exist, however everyone is pointing fingers but not a single soul knows who is actually to blame for this nonsense. During this time period of hysteria, there are multiple scenes that are very questionable due to one person and one person only. Abigail is the one most responsible for the hysteria and witchcraft in Salem. She threatens the group of girls that accompanied her in the woods while they all danced. She has also lied about many things on multiple occasions in which causes an extreme amount of suspicion.

The more people she killed, the less it meant to her. The town started to realize the horror taking place--even some of the girls. But Abigail no longer had any consideration for her sins and continued to persecute more and more innocent people. Abigail Williams proved to be the most heinous character throughout the entirety of the play. Her actions were not justifiable in any way.

Hale’s questions are leading and forcing Abigail to give an answer that incriminated Tituba. It is as if the society knows that witches are not real, but they are so against differences that they will do anything to get rid of them. So they convince people they are witches and instead of facing their views of people who are different, they execute them. Not only do the leading questions make the reader question Abigail’s credibility, but also our knowledge of the affair gives Abigail a motive to lie. Abigail’s affair with John Proctor leads to jealously and eventually leads to the accusation of Elizabeth

Abigail and the society itself are to blame for the events in Salem causing murder and outrage in this town. Abigail is the character mainly to blame for the outrage in Salem. She is a liar, double faced hypocrite that will stop at nothing to get herself out of the mess that she created. Making her one of the main killers of these innocent puritan people.
