Interdisciplinary Team Paper Janet Borngesser University of Alabama at Birmingham Interdisciplinary Leadership Role Development NUR 737 Dr. Martha Lavender July 15, 2015 Interdisciplinary Team Paper The neurocritical care intensive care unit (NICU) team has certainly undergone much change and transformation since the first neurocritical care physician and nurse practitioner (NP) took over the team and seven bed unit in 1999. Prior to this initial ‘team’ the NICU was managed by the neurosurgery attending and residents in between surgeries. The NICU team’s purpose was to improve and provide better care to the variety of complex neuro critical ill patient population at a 605 bed academic center in Metro Atlanta.

Patient care experience and the need for improvement toward patient-centered care is aligned with nursing excellence (Stimpfel, Sloane, McHugh, & Aiken, 2015). With the expectation of nursing excellence, the role of the nurse has expanded over the years with the current trend of focus on policy change. These policy changes are geared towards changes in patient care which will have a positive impact on patient outcomes. The nurse can become a leader in advocacy with the goal of raising awareness to health care concerns (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw & O'Grady, 2016). The purpose of this post is to describe two organizations which impact the practice of nursing and show the role these organizations play in nurse education and research.

First and foremost, I am a lifelong learner. I am committed to expanding my knowledge and skills in healthcare and am excited about the opportunity to do so through the AMNP program. I am eager to learn from experienced nursing faculty and my fellow students, as well as through the clinical opportunities that the program provides. I believe that my willingness to learn and adapt to new situations will serve me well as I pursue a career in nursing.

As I embark on my journey to become a registered nurse at the master's level, I anticipate significant changes in my role and responsibilities. As a registered nurse, I will transition from a student nurse to a fully licensed healthcare professional. This transition entails a shift from primarily observing and assisting in patient care to taking on a more independent and autonomous role in providing comprehensive care to individuals, families, and communities. The standards for my new role as a registered nurse are established by professional nursing organizations, regulatory bodies, and healthcare institutions.

I am an experienced hardworking, reliable and motivated Senior Nurse. I lead by example and thrive on challenges. I am able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and this is evident when working well within the multi-disciplinary team (MDT). I have worked in Alder Hey children’s Hospital for fourteen years, working initially within the Oncology unit for eight years were I acquired a vast knowledge of sepsis.

Each morning patients came in for assessment and the treatment team developed or altered existing treatment protocols. I longed to be part of this team, working to stabilize each patient so they could return home to pursue their goals. The nurses stood out to me as the team members at ground zero in the unit, working directly with patients, and advocating for them in meetings. As a Nurse Practitioner, I will provide this same standard of holistic care to my patients, taking into consideration their biological, social, psychological and cultural needs while developing and implementing treatment decisions.

My passion for nursing practice defies description; leading to the reason I am opting to pursue a higher level of education in nursing. The George Washington University School of nursing has one of the highly ranked master’s programs in the country, which offers a competitive curriculum and highly defined leadership skills that integrates technology into learning. It is therefore my desire to pursue an advance education at this facility because it prepares practitioners to become great clinicians ready to solve real-world clinical problems. Moreover, the opportunity to pursue a degree in this facility will afford me the ability to be a competent and highly efficient family nurse practitioner; that will serve the community and mostly the underserved. I am the last child in a family of eight that has aspired to pursue my education at the graduate level.

Nursing is a most trusted and gratifying profession. As a nurse educator, I will express my passion for teaching by incorporating features such as clinical assessments, practical application of theory, evaluation, and role modeling into advanced nursing practice, from previous experiences and current experience and clinical practicum to find success and gratification in students chosen profession as well empowering leaners to develop their own strengths, beliefs, and personal attributes to become a good professional. Personally, I do have a positive attitude towards the personal and professional growth, and value ongoing learning and will stive to instill the same into my students learnig journey .. Personal Statement of Purpose Since 2005, I Jean Athappilly, graduated from western Michigan University thrived in excellent patient experience and nursing skills competency. My quest to intensify nursing knowledge is the Adult Gerontology primary care NP program. Upon Graduation I am confident to integrate my nursing background in collaboration with other health care professionals autonomously. September 2000 embarks my professional life as a nurse. Each day brought a new element in me and sparkled through my patients.

I just completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and look forward to exploring nursing theory, evidence-based practice and leadership even further in the advance practice curriculum. I am pursuing family nurse practitioner because it will allow me to be more versatile in my nursing skills and serve a larger patient population. There has been a focus on primary care medicine since the Affordable Care Act; resulting in a larger need for nurse practitioners required to care for this patient population. I have been granted an opportunity to advance my career and I am more than ready to take on the added responsibilities and handle treatment plans autonomously, as well as learning additional skills such as diagnosing and prescribing medications. By obtaining my graduate level education my clinical judgment would be enhanced to improve safety, quality of care and patient outcomes substantially.

I understand the importance of delivering effective patient care and having empathy for patients since I have a strong foundation in human anatomy, medical language, and patient placement tactics. I am committed to continuing education and training opportunities in order to stay current with new developments in the field, which is constantly expanding with new technology and approaches. Because I am a strong team player who knows the need of working together with others and maintaining open lines of communication in order to offer the best possible outcomes for patients, I am able to work well under the guidance of physicians and other healthcare professionals.
