Reflection On Clinical Orientation

I woke up on an especially cool winter morning and looked over to my mother’s side of the bed. She was not there, I knew that, but I secretly wished she was. I swung my legs off the bedside and rushed to the bathroom to brush my teeth and get myself ready for school. This was a typical morning for me.

The privilege to attend a government subsidized school where top students in the region compete to get into the program that allowed only 60 students per year was indeed a blessing. As clinical rotations began, what was once considered a mere opportunity evolved into a true passion for caring as I truly love and enjoy nursing and helping people.

Description: In week 7 we had visited Wesburn Manor, the Long-term Care (Clinical Placement) setting. It was our first time there, therefore as a group, we oriented the place. At this time, we went to each nursing station on each floor and introduced ourselves from the organization we were from and how we will be providing patient care to the clients in this setting. We were educated by our clinical instructor on the different access codes in the building, the policies and guidelines, our assigned floor and the appointed personal support worker. Our role of professionalism as a nursing student was represented as we came prepared and greeted each healthcare and staff member.

The skills and knowledge that I have gained in this course will help me to write better works in the future. I have grown as a more competent and skilled writer over the past semester. I can take what I have learned and not only use it in future college level writing but also in my profession as a nurse. Today, I feel much more prepared to take on a writing assignment. In this class, I have learned several ways to organize my thoughts and ideas and turn them into a well thought out project.

I honestly did not know what to expect, I heard it would be the hardest thing I have ever done and I definitely believe that to be true. I have definitely felt defeated on multiple occasions and for the first time in my life actually cried about school. I am so thankful to have such great professors to encourage me when I did not do well on exams, give me feedback on study habits, and truly care about my future at Denver School of Nursing and as a nurse. My classmates for the most part are exceptional. They have been so positive, helpful, and I feel like we all learn from each other.

During my course with NSCC, where I am studying to become a Continuing Care Assistant. Each student is required to work in a continuing care facility alongside other health care providers for a month. I attended skills development placement at Harbour View Lodge located in Sheet Harbour. This placement has given me the opportunity to apply my knowledge, and skills that I have studied and practiced in the classroom. When entering the facility the first week I felt nervous and excited at the same time.

I had the pleasure of visiting with Mrs. Cooke’s fifth grade class during my clinical experiences. Mrs. Cooke has a great rapport with her students and has very little difficult actively engaging students in learning. One of the “takeaways” from my visit references the students’ and teachers’ commitment to the principles of “The Leader in Me”. From a school-wide perspective, East Elementary School does not practice the traditional positive behavior interventions. Instead, the administration has adopted the ideals and principles behind “The Leader in Me”.

NU 230 Therapeutic Nursing Interventions was held in the morning on Mondays and Wednesdays from 09:00-11:30 and NU 220 Pharmacology was held after from 12:00-3:30pm. This experience was very familiar to me because I have been in the academic scene for many years now. Knowing that I am a very visual and auditory learner I tend to do well in the classroom setting. This week I had the opportunity to spend some time in both the OR and Endoscopy unit. Going into the practice days I was excited and optimistic about what I was going to take away from the experience, as I considered my possible future in working in the operative setting. However, by the second day of practice, I realized that I wasn’t overly excited about either of the units and that the expectations I had set out, didn’t quite match up like I had hoped. Even though I don’t feel as though nursing in either of the units is for me, I was able to take away new knowledge that I believe has enhanced my overall nursing practice.

As a nursing student, I have a grasp on what nursing is through textbooks and lectures. The more I learn about this profession, the more I learn about what my philosophy is. Although I haven’t gained clinical experience as a nurse, I have gained some clinical experience as a nurse assistant that helps me administer patient care while acquiring knowledge working under the supervision of nurses. This experience helps me to become knowledgeable on what their roles and responsibilities are, and it has inspired me that I hope when I graduate, to equal their skill, diligence and passion.

Today, I am glad I choose nursing because I have overcome my social fears, learn to be a team player, learn how to prioritize and most importantly learned to manage stress. Lastly, I grew as a nurse with each semester because I learned how to respect and treat each patient as a unique individual. I have also learned to put my patient safety as my priority and provide presence because I realized through my clinical experience that, sometimes that all the patients need. As we became more comfortable with our clinical instructor and each other, the group became more open with their feelings about the clinical experience. The overall consensus was that we felt like we could be of more use and in turn learn more in a different clinical setting. In short, we didn't like our placement and what opportunities it afforded us. When I took a step back to assess the situation, I understood that our negative feelings were stemming from our unfulfilled expectations. After reflecting on the cause of our feelings, I made the decision to try to turn it around.
