I always enjoy going to lectures where a Deaf person is presenting. During Deaf Week I attended many lectures that were interpreted and I really loved going to them, because I feel like I learned a lot. Not only were they informative they were also very educational. During Deaf Week I brought my boyfriend, who is not in ASL, but the event was interpreted and he loved it. He learned so much, so I knew that this event was not going to disappoint. I decided to bring my sister, who is also not in any ASL classes, but she’s a student at the University of Iowa and knows how much I love my ASL classes. I informed her on what to expect and she decided that she would like to come. The event took about two hours and I learned a lot about the difference
Prior to reading these chapters I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I have never really been exposed to the Deaf- World. I have watched shows such as Switched at Birth, but I know that it doesn’t completely portray the real Deaf- Community. I was extremely interested in seeing their side of the story and gaining insight on the life they live. I decided to read chapters one, and two.
The film "Through Deaf Eyes" follows the history of the deaf. It touches the everyday struggles they faced in their life. The misunderstanding of what it meant to be deaf years ago, and the amazing accomplishments they have made throughout the years. Scattered throughout the film are short documentaries by deaf artists and filmmakers, showing their experiences. Some show the struggles of learning to speak, living with cochlear implants, and the time in history when deaf people were not allowed to use sign language.

Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, one of the many people who made it possible for deaf Americans to learn, as co-founder of the American School for the Deaf. Thomas was born in 1787 and was the eldest of the Gallaudet children. He went on to study at Yale, and then became a minister. While visiting his family in Hartford, Connecticut, he noticed that his siblings weren 't playing with one girl. He went outside and discovered that she was deaf, he then pointed to his hat and wrote out H.A.T. in the dirt.

While watching “History: Through Deaf Eyes” by PBS, I learned a lot about deaf culture and history. I already knew about certain events, like the rise of oral teaching and the protest for Gallaudet; however, listening to the stories from people who experienced these events gave me appreciation I did not have before. Also, learning how technology shaped deaf history was also very interesting, as well as the various options for deaf children today. The rise of oral teaching was a part of history I briefly learned about when I was younger, but I never fully understood it until watching the movie.
Growing up in a small-town I was literally in a culture bubble. There were almost no deaf people. I just never had the opportunity to converse with someone who is deaf. As I was reading this book I noticed my internal motivation for learning ASL was changing. I now want to learn as much ASL as I possibly can, so I can chat with those I come in contact with that are deaf or hard of hearing.
Mark was born in 1966 to two deaf parents. Although the circumstances and troubles his mother had during the process of his birth he was born healthy and hearing. Mark tells that his parents were forbidden from teaching him sign language. I cant image growing up with deaf parents and have little communication with them. Deaf or not parents should always be encouraging to their children to learn to speak with their children.
Inside Deaf Culture Inside deaf culture is a very strong book written by carol Padden and tom Humphries in this book authors have tried to give a tour of the most important moments that has shaped the Deaf culture. Book starts by showing how much power hearing people have had over the deaf population in the past and how they saw death people almost the same as criminals and also how they tried to get rid of them by placing them into asylums and intuitions and how this was a beginning of first schools for the deaf and how much power and control they had over the children under their care also there was a lot of rumors of how children were molested in these schools and because they
After this event I felt like I got a little taste of what Mark had experienced in the book Deaf Again, but the roles were switched I was hearing in an all deaf environment instead of being deaf in a hearing environment like mark was. Although this type of event could have scared me away from future deaf events it didn’t. The reason why I am looking forward to events like this in the future is because I’m going to persevere and improve so next time ill understand a little more and sooner or later ill understand everything that’s going on. Knowing how bad my ASL is makes me just want to get better. Therefore, there are many things I could improve onto make my future experiences better and I’m looking forward to the next

From taking my first-ever ASL class to a Deaf culture class, I have learned a lot about a community that is right under my nose. Reading this book has also changed my outlook for the better on the Deaf culture. Many people stereotype Deaf culture, to be weird or not useful. As a hearing person who has never had to daily communicate within the community, I find myself learning more and more every day about customs and the way of living by the Deaf. I think of the saying some people use “Deaf and Dumb” and I think to myself how this even came to be.
What was your experience and feelings about watching it? Throughout the documentary film Through Deaf Eyes, I felt amazed by deaf culture. The deaf culture is a versatile, rich, and unique community that more people need to be aware of. When the film was covering the transition of ASL schools to oral only I mostly felt ashamed of my own culture.
With this experience, it had allowed me the space to utilize the skills that I have to acquire through my educational program while attending QCC. I have found this experience to be rewarding which gave me great insight into my future of being a Sign Language Interpreter. By me working side by side with members of the Deaf community, it has shown me …. And with this I have a better understanding what it means to be a sign language interpreter. Therefore, my hope is that by me being accepted to your program I can further learn more about the community and the different ways in which I can be helpful towards members within the Deaf community.
