Chapter 11 covers personality. Personality means the traits that make a person who they are. It is part of our uniqueness. Sigmund Freud came up with one of the first comprehensive theory of personality. He also recognized that our mental life happens outside of our conscious awareness.
Personality, in layman’s term usually involves useful judgments such as social attractiveness of a person. People sometimes used this lay definitions of personality to highlight the features of an individual’s physical appearance and maybe several comments on their way of interactions with others. These definitions are normally associated with our implicit personality theories and elements of folklore within a certain culture are often included. Hence, using these definitions, personality seems to be judged based on social context. However, in psychological term personality is defined as the characteristics, or the distinct qualities in an individual.
Personality theory Introduction Personality is the way we behave in certain situations; our actions, and attitudes towards these situations. Personality is also the most important factor in individual uniqueness shaped by culture and past experiences. It is the consistency and the distinctiveness of our behavioural traits. In psychology, five factors can help verify ones personality type. They are openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, and agreeableness.

Cattell is one of the main proponents of trait theory, a model of personality that seeks to identify the basic traits necessary to describe personality. Traits are enduring dimensions of personality characteristics along which people differ. Cattell and his colleagues first discovered the primary traits, which provide the most basic definition of individual personality differences. These more specific primary traits are more powerful in understanding and predicting the complexity of actual behavior. Next, these researchers factor-analyzed the primary traits themselves in order to investigate personality structure at a higher level.
Personality is the way one behaves, thinks and feels. Theorists are interested to learn what shapes personality, what causes one to behave, think and feel the way one does. Different theorists have different beliefs in what causes these individual differences. These individual differences can be split into two categories, nature and nurture. Nature would be environment while nature would be the brain and the genes, also known as genotype.
Psychology is defined as “the scientific study of the mind and behavior” (Introduction to Psychology, 2015). Psychology provides an overview of biology and behavior, sensation and perception, learning, memory, intelligence, language, motivation, emotion, abnormal psychology, and therapy (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 1). Because psychology allows for a better understanding of how the mind and body work, this knowledge can be beneficial for any field of study or career. The theoretical and practical understanding of the basics of psychology can help with decision-making, critical thinking, stress management, time management, better understanding of others, improving communication, and even achieving goals and objectives, all components that allow someone to be more successful throughout their life. Throughout this course I hope to gain a greater understanding of historical and theoretical perspectives of human behavior and development (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 2).
Personality is one of the main areas of psychology research. Over the years, researchers developed theories trying to explain how people are different and similar. Personality traits were grouped together to be determinants of more general traits such as Extraversion, Agreeableness or Neuroticism. The traits were tested for various correlations. All this to better understand why people behave the way they do and how big impact does the personality have on behaviour.
f this chapter is to present a summary of relevant literature in order to explore the study of self-regulation and personality. In so doing, several sections have been included. The first section covers theoretical foundations of self-regulation and its components. In the second section, the development of personality theories from lexical approach to Big Five and NEO model of personality has been presented.
Personality is defined as the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual 's unique character. Personality theory is the approaches to understanding the “What”, “How” and “When” of characteristics and features that make up an individual 's personality. An insight into personality is important to understand the function of a person’s mind. By doing this you would be able to understand and observe your own psyche from an outside perspective, interact with others better and understand why they do what they do or predict how someone may react to something. My personality can be describe as Introverted since I am reserved, practical and quiet.
