Reflection On Pollan

In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he directly to Americans about the western diet and why he believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 420). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionist, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads.

He says that the human race should go back to the diets and lifestyles of our ancestors or in other words go back to the bush. Pollan however disagrees with Burkitts drastic solution and instead agrees with Gyorgy Scrinis’s (2008) solution to the problem, “the most important fact about any food is not its nutrient content but its degree of processing.”

Rigorous innovation has helped Americans fulfill countless dreams, however with every gift there is a usually a price-tag or opportunity cost. Now in the midst of the general presidential election, platforms that represent our beliefs can undergo much needed reform to address the opportunity costs that were surpassed in the process of success. Among the various problems found in our society, a key movement that has raised necessary controversy has to do with environmental policy.

I personally feel Pollan’s dilemma in the order he states it. The question “What should I have for dinner?” is a relevant statement in my everyday life. This essentially is the omnivore 's dilemma. Since humans are indeed omnivores, we can eat whatever we want. The dilemma surfaces when what we are consuming has repercussions.

Today in the news we have many new accusations that have come up and lots of new evidence. Some very substantial accusations were made against John proctor and this quiet, peaceful farmer is starting to appear to be more devious and menacing than originally believed. As Proctor entered the court Pariss immediately voiced his concerns about what Proctor being a true Christian. When you see a litterbug throw the rest of their half-eaten lunch on the ground or dispose of a cigarette out their Hummer window, you might be disgusted by the fact that, that someone negatively impacts the environment. Most human beings know that our negative actions towards the environment have a ripple effect like a drop in the ocean. However, not everyone cares or sees the impact that we all individually have on the earth. In recent decade, the United States has seen supermarkets continuously get filled with packages labeled with things like “Low sodium” or “No Trans Fats.” Companies stick these labels on their food to match the current fads of what is good for you and what is not. In his essay Unhappy Meals, Michael Pollan advocates a return to natural and basic foods, and deplores nutritionism. Pollan argues that nutritionism does not actually tell people what is healthy or not, and that the only way to be sure you are eating healthy is to eat natural, fresh food.

A strong suggestion Pollan encourages, to his readers, is gardening. Gardening soothes the soul, produces more local produce, and reduces ones ' carbon footprint according to Pollan. Throughout the article, Pollan shows he understands that to make a differnece about climate change it may be difficult and a long process but is possible. By adding humor, specific diction, and concessions Pollan can make his argument in why we, as a society, should bother to do something about climate change. One farmer who did not use chemicals on his crops, claimed that his harvest was better than his neighbor who had used chemicals on his crops, so it appears that the world’s hungry can be fed with the use of organic agriculture. Explain why Pollan has a problem with the way the American government subsidizes farms, particularly those that grow corn. Pollan does not agree with how the government is just paying off the farmers and not helping the situation of subsidies and falling prices. Pollan does not like how the farmers are treated different from any other food processors or exporters in the food business. But that still won’t get rid of pollution. Not everyone needs to stop doing any activities that causes pollution. But, everyone needs to at least try to reduce the amount of activities they do that cause pollution. Simple acts from using common transportation to reusing plastic bags are extremely helpful to our environment and future environment. Start acting now before it’s too late.

The rich get richer, the poorer get poorer and our earth will continue to be raped of its resources contributing to the dire depletion and destruction of our ecosystems. I know people say every little help counts, like cycling to work, recycling, upcycling and cleaning up, sure all this does help and contribute to the well-being of our planet, but as Lorax says in Dr. Seuss book “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not,” I believe that the 1% that have all the ‘wealth’ should be the ones to change and contribute their monetary resources to the many projects that exist to save the planet, only then we can see an expeditious change.
