(2010) provides a definition of cultural vitality as the maintenance and continuation of cultural beliefs, practices and life ways. Maintaining cultural vitality often involves a struggle to maintain an identity while adapting to different and challenging environments (Eckerman et al., 2010). I believe that allowing someone to have a cultural identity, and therefore help to maintain cultural vitality, means understanding and accepting differences such as spiritual and religious views, customs and values. It also means however that we cannot see ourselves as having the right to decide what differences should be accepted and what should not. Aboriginal cultural vitality is not acknowledges adequately in Australia (Eckerman et al., 2010). Populations such as Africa, Asia, South America and Europe all have histories of colonisation of their countries and people, however it appears that other colonising populations have made stronger efforts to repair damage done to the indigenous communities (Taylor, 2010). One of the ways that people have done this is through treaties. I think this would be hard to do with the Aboriginal people as they are made of many different communities themselves, meaning that a treaty would have to account for all these differences. From the readings supplied, I have found that all populations that have been colonised seem to be worse off for it. Colonisation appears to always involve a more powerful population enforcing itself on another, which I believe accounts for what some may see as acceptance or understanding. I think that to truly allow cultural vitality in indigenous communities, these populations must be allowed to practice their ways freely, without impact from the non-Indigenous people. When I was in school, I was taught that Aboriginal people were now receiving equal rights in society, however I now see that this isn’t true. South Sea Islanders did not have a major contribution to the convivial perspective in Australia due to the conditions faced by the South Sea Islanders. Their position on the gregarious hierarchy was very low as they were treated like slaves. The were optically canvassed as outsiders and called vilifying names to remind them of where they stand. They faced many discrimination as the Queensland system of labour discriminated against their race, this lead to farther discrimination. ASSI weren’t sanctioned in mainstream hospitals, withal experienced kindred disadvantages as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
Indigenous Australian youth still face numerous difficulties growing up in a modern Australian society, even though they are living in a time of ‘equality’ for all religions, races and genders. This paper examines the main cultural influences for indigenous youth, and challenges they face growing up. In particular, it will explore the ways in which Indigenous youth today continue to be affected, connected and interdependent to both a dominant white culture and indigenous culture. It also includes the reasons why the indigenous youth of Australia continue to be marginalized, oppressed and stereotyped while growing up in a society that claims to be an egalitarian democratic country. Examples of Indigenous youth from the film ‘Yolngu Boy’ are used to explore this topic.
However, there is still hope. While the injustices of the Stolen generation, massacres and centuries of mistreatment against Indigenous Australians can never be erased, we can create future in which these atrocities never occur again. These atrocities emerge from ignorance and fear, so working to understand Indigenous culture must surely be the only path to removing the racism that plagues Australia. We have so must to learn from the rich cultural history of Indigenous Australians, particularly in their spiritual relationship with the land they have lived on for thousands of years. If we embrace this incredible knowledge, not only will we eliminate the barriers preventing equality in our society, we will also be stronger as a nation in both environmental and social relations.
Aboriginal identity, mental health and suicide rates were outlined throughout this analysis along with the disgusting lack of government aid. As stated above, the aboriginals from the Kattawapiskak River have a strong sense of identity. The persons on these reserves are proud of their traditions and practice resilience in their faith and values, however, the physical and emotional pain these people are put through will soon break their spirits. Abstract Being an aborigine in a white dominated society is a complicated identity. Australia, one of the white governed nations, also owns many aboriginal tribes. They lived harmonious lives in the early period. But European colonization has made a profound effect on the lives of Aboriginals in Australia, which led to the total demolition of their native culture, identity and history. As a result the new generation Aboriginals have lost their Aboriginal heritage and have been accepted neither by Aboriginals nor by whites.
If someone was to ask me what anthropology was, prior to this assignment, I would have probably taken an educated guess such as “the study of life”. In a sense that is correct but not entirely accurate. Anthropology is defined as, “The study of human kind in all times and places” (Haviland, Prins, McBride, & Walrath, 2017). After an extensive analyzation of my experiences, I concluded that I don’t practice anthropology in my life enough. In addition, I discovered that my life doesn’t have much diversity in it.
I particularly agreed with the authors’ argument about blending cultural and academic knowledge (McKinley & Brayboy, 2005, p. 435). I think it is institution’s responsibility to respect their cultural knowledge but also provide appropriate academic knowledge, relative to Indigenous students to be able to actively engage in reciprocal learning with their cultural knowledge, which, then, adds value to their survivance practice.
