Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings. However, what sets a counsellor apart is their experience and the ability to apply counselling theories and techniques to assist people in gaining awareness, insight and explore ways of solving their own issues. The purpose of this reflection is to reflect upon the use of counselling skills, which I have applied in the role-play with the goal of establishing healthy rapport building. …show more content…
I was given two minutes to terminate the session, which I haven’t utilized properly as I ended before the given time. The setting of me being as a counsellor and the tutor watching the session is one of the factor that have added to my less abled articulations owing to the failure of harnessing nervous energy. After my role play I felt much relieved and happy when my tutor pointed out some of the positive and negative aspects of the entire session with the client. Through the role play, I am better convinced that counselling is not an easy job in which counsellor has to deal with the diverse issues from the clients of diverse cultural backgrounds. I believe, given time and more exposure to clients, my skills would become better and I’d also be able to make progress in areas I have identified for improvement, while maintaining a grip on my current strengths. Overall, I feel satisfied that I have made an effective use of basic counselling micro skills to establish a therapeutic relationship with my
QP engaged Maunica in participating in a CBT activity geared towards emotional response. QP explained to Maunica that the activity will help her to learn the event is causing the emotion, the interpretation of the event and how to use mindfulness skills in observing and deciding. QP asked Maunica to list some emotions people have. QP brainstormed with Maunica things that prompts events of emotional reactions in people. QP assisted Maunica in participating in a mindfulness exercise.
In task one I will describe how the helping relationship is initiated, also I will cover ethical concerns, boundaries of the relationship, equal opportunities and confidentiality. Clients come from many backgrounds such as, age, culture, social class, work status, gender, religion, disability, marital status, education, sexuality, ethnicity and politics. Counsellors usually are committed to increasing scientific and professional understanding with conduct and people’s comprehension of by themselves and others and the application of this kind of knowledge in order to prove the healthiness of people, agencies and modern society. Counsellors esteem and protect civil and individual legal rights and also the main incredible importance of freedom
In order to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the counselling process, the counsellor must employ a number of individual counselling skills. The effective use of these counselling skills enables the development a working therapeutic alliance therefore empowers clients to their perspectives regarding problem situations in their lives and create positive therapeutic outcomes (Egan, 2007). After watching and analysing my recorded counselling demonstration, I was able to identify the counselling skills that were used effectively, the skills that require improvement and the skills that were not demonstrated. Accordingly, this essay examines my ability to demonstrate basic counselling skills and the contribution of these skills to the formation
SSW 197 Assignment #2 Kirstin Cain 9000736 The skills I learned within the classroom that I utilized during my practicum were active listening, active listening and active listening, reflection and having empathy. I also used some paraphrasing and summarizing, particularly when a client was disclosing some previous trauma that he believed to have occurred during his childhood (the psychiatrist was uncertain as to whether these were actual events or delusions). I had the opportunity to do role play with an individual wanting to practice making phone calls inquiring about apartments for rent. I used sessional contracting with this individual, did perception checks and had him score his anxiety at various points throughout the role play.
Mock Therapy During this mock therapy session, I played the role of the therapist and Lysa played the role of my client who was seeking therapy services. Lysa is a middle aged married woman who reports that she has three grown children and two grandchildren. Lysa reports that she works full time but she reports that her schedule makes her go in early and get off early. Lysa reported that she was feeling depressed as there were many things that have changed in her life recently and she felt that she was unable to live up to her own expectations of herself, others expectations of her, and she reported that she was overall feeling lonely.
The counselor in the video applies all active listening skills which include encouraging, paraphrasing and summarizing, and reflection of feelings techniques. During the conversation, the counselor constantly uses verbal prompt like “yeah” or “hmm” and non-verbal prompt like nodding her head when the care-receiver was telling his story. The counselor also keeps encouraging the client to talk and shows her acceptance of who he is. Paraphrasing and summarizing technique plays a significant role in this counseling section.
End of Semester Reflection 1 what they learned and how their approach to clients has evolved during the semester One thing I learned over the semester was how to relax in session. When I first started seeing clients I was so anxious that it was hard for me to keep my head in the moment and to give the client my attention. I was also so focused on getting through all of the intake questions that I failed to slow down and connect with my client. Although I was already aware of this common mistake, it was still very hard to resist. I was able to gather a vast amount of information about the client in the intake which impressed the therapists in my group supervision, but did nothing to make the client comfortable with me or with the therapeutic
Overall, I had a very positive experience during this first week of my mental health clinical rotation. When I went into the hospital, I was a little apprehensive because of the stories the orientation nurse told us about the different units. However, when I got onto the unit, I realized that these children were the same as other kids, but they had different mental health issues from their past experiences or their genetics. Most of the kids on this unit did not do anything to become the way they are.
I very satisfied to working here at TCSC/DC. It has been great year for us here and continues to grow. And with the great news that we will be moving to Dell in 2018 I am humbled by the award I did receive this year for the Living the Human Care Promise 2017. And wow it was a surprise to get this award and the bonus was also surprising and great. I continue to make our patients our number one goal and keeping them happy and happy with our services we provide for them.
I have learned a lot about this filed of clinical counseling. When I began my undergraduate degree in psychology I knew that I would have to choose what I ultimately wanted to do. I, originally wanted to be a marriage and family counselor. I realized that that was so specific based. I had already ruled out being a clinical counselor because I thought they only dealt with clients with mental illness.
When I assumed the role as an Intake Counselor for the role play, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Upon meeting with my client, I was slightly nervous but hopeful in gaining some insight as to why he was referred to the agency. I met with my client, Jon, after he completed the intake form and learned that he had been referred from the hospital’s emergency room the previous night. Jon presented several issues during our session.
One of my roles during the practicum field experience has been as a Skilled Helper. Hackney & Cormier (2012) defines the skilled helper is can facilitate the process of growth and adaptation to challenges (p. 3). This function helped me apply and demonstrate what I’ve learned during the Lamar School Counseling courses. According to Egan (2002), the helper encourages the speaker to tell their story, by using active listening skills, demonstrating core conditions, and helping the speaker to explore and unfold their story, and also to reflect on it.
The relevant form of counselling is therapeutic counselling. I understand this to mean the process of listening to a client and offering neutral comment and advice. It does not entail telling a client what the solution is to their issue, the aim is to help guide the client so that they can establish a resolution in their own mind which will help them resolve the issue or help them to see how to achieve their personal aims and goals. Counselling will use tools such as hypnotherapy and coaching in order to help the
This class was enlightening with its many facets, covering many multicultural aspects that would relate to the clinical counseling field. Intriguing were the amount of issues to consider when counseling clients of different cultural backgrounds. Whether it was text book related, lecture notes, or the videos we watched, I can see how there are many components that relate to culture. Covering, whereas, in some cases revisiting concepts such as racism, gender and sexism, sexual orientation, spiritual diversity, and advocacy, there was always something to be gained from what was being taught. Truly, there is a new-found appreciation in application and practice of the knowledge, insight, and understanding that was gained.
I want to study the access to social work course as I enjoy helping people who are in need or come from a disadvantaged background and I believe this course will allow me to progress my career in doing so. One of the aspects of social work that I am parcularly passionate about is that it allows you to observe a social injusce and then to have the opportunity to make a posive change. As part of the syllabus provided I am interested in learning more about social policy and how issues in social welfare are viewed/ dealt with dierently by the government and society. To begin to get an insight into social work and what it involves I have been taking free online courses with the open university, one of which was ‘A7achment in the Early Years’.
