BACKGROUND/INFLUENCES/CONTRIBUTORY RELATIONSHIPS
During my first year in college, I did not foresee the barriers I would face being a first-generation Latina college student and not having a family member to ask for guidance in navigating my college education. Before attending college, I was aware that once I graduated from high school I would need to work and help my family financially because the occupation that my father held, selling ice cream in a truck, was not stable. Growing up in East Los Angeles and attending James A. Garfield High School, an overcrowded and poorly funded school, made it difficult to navigate my education. My knowledge about higher education was limited by the minimal interactions I had with counselors at my high

Through EAOP, I took a position as a student coordinator at Santa Ana High School, where I provided one-on-one academic advising to over 150 students, 10th - 12th grade. I guided students through the college application process, and discussed with them their educational goals, plans after high school, and the options they have to pursue different opportunities upon graduation. In forming mentorship relationships with the students that I served, I realized that they were unfamiliar with the requirements and process of completing college and financial aid applications because the majority of the students were first-generation, low-income …show more content…
Students will have a multitude of options based on their interests and the support they need to reach their fullest potential. In addition, as student populations change, based on cultures and backgrounds, I will be flexible and adaptive by creating student and parent engagement workshops to create awareness about, and end stigma against discussing suicide, bullying, mental health, and disability issues. Also, I hope to build partnerships with colleagues in creating a larger fund for my current scholarship for children of street vendors and help expand it Los Angeles County. As a daughter of a street vendor who had limited access to resources, as well as a first-generation Latina college graduate, I will have shown the students I serve, and my community, not only that I am a resource to them, but, more importantly that they can break down barriers themselves. Inclusively, as a James A. Garfield Alumna, I will empower youth in my community to pursue their goals, because representation in particular professions matter. I am confident that my academic and professional experience in the field of education have prepared me with the professionalism that your program demands, and that, given the opportunity, I could be a valuable asset to your

The world, as well as ourselves, can become confident. I will encourage scholarship, leadership, and good citizenship with my school and community. With my hardwork, not only shall I benefit, but all that I help shall be benefited as well.
An event that we held as the Hmong Organization Promoting Education, we talked about Building Our Future. This event focused on the international abusive marriages within the Hmong community and I had discussed with other Hmong male-identifying students what we could do to support the Hmong women and those who identify as Hmong LGBTQ+. From this event, I began developing my social justice identity and gradually started engaging in discussions with social justice topics such as privilege, prejudice, and many more. It eventually led me to pursuing a Racial and Ethnic studies minor that has contributed greatly to my knowledge of institutional influences and the inequalities that exist within American society. With all this previous experience that I have done, I hope to engage in discussions and events with community members and professionals in raising awareness of social justice and mental health
I also think that my added business, language and cultural skills significantly improve upon my ability contextualize and extrapolate intricate concepts and make them more appealing to a broader audience. I can also simultaneously lead a team in specific specialties with innovation, respect, and responsiveness for the families under your care to further undergird the aforementioned endeavor you have so carefully nurtured. I believe the Rauner Family and West Communities YMCA is a place where I may joyfully serve and promote the collective kindred heart and intelligence of the families in the Pilsen and west communities with my gifts and talents. I would also enjoy taking your aspirations and momentum and further strengthen the record and reputation of the Rauner Family and West Communities YMCA as a force for positive change in the community.
In addition, Ryan Padgett (2012) found that first generation student seems to be more unprepared to interact with faculty upon entering college than students whose parents went to college (p.261). The disadvantage a first-generation student faces upon entering college is due to the lack of contact with individuals who fall outside their parent’s social

At the time, I thought my options were either getting a higher education and risking being separated from my family or just getting a job. I was devastated and scared of my options. Still I decided to find resources and people that will help me get through it. Thankfully I found people that were motivated to help undocumented students pursue higher

College is one of the most significant times in a person’s life. Every year high school kids will visit many different colleges so that they can be confident in their college decision. Some kids will follow in their parent’s foot steps and base their decision on where their mom or dad went, though, not all kids are fortunate to have help from their parents. Many kids nowadays may be the first in their family to take on higher education. The article, “First Generation College Students: Unprepared and Behind” by Liz Riggs explains that kids who are the first in their family to take on college are at a disadvantage compared to kids with parents who attended college.
In addition to this, I was constantly denied eligibility for scholarships due to my immigration status, and although I was given many opportunities to represent my school at national conventions, I was unable to attend for the same reason. Fortunately, I suddenly came to the realization that only obstacle preventing me from embarking on these scholastic and career opportunities was myself. It was then that I sought help and with the assistance of a few selfless individuals who took the time to walk me through the process, I
For the past three years, I have held positions in the student government at my school. This year, I’m the vice president, and many of the skills and traits I have learned could carry over into high school and become valuable. I am a good student to have enrolled in your program. I'm the right

There were many events that happened in 2017 that made me reconsider aspects of my career, education and society as a whole, but by far the biggest event was the beginning of Donald Trump’s presidency. This was an event that managed to shake up my life, both at Cornell and in Painesville. It was devastating to know that the person in office earned that position through a rhetoric of hatred and discrimination. At Cornell, it was a smack in the face to realize that some of my closest friends and colleagues, whether Dreamers or international students, were living in fear of losing their opportunity of an education at an elite university such as our own. The workload at Cornell is tough enough on its own, and an extra burden of uncertainty for
Family ties are arguably the biggest factor that contributes to a person's opinion, mental health, and consequent decisions throughout life. A person could argue that parents can serve as role models that kids look up to resulting in like minded adults, while others could argue that because of a negative experience with their family it could induce the complete inverse reaction. Regardless, there has always been more significance held in parental relations in specific. This paper will dive deeper into the reasoning behind the biological and social aspects around what makes these the most crucial connections in a person's life.
