The serial killer that I am doing my report on is Jeffrey Dahmer. Jeffrey was born on May 21, 1960 and he had died on November 28, 1994. Jeffrey was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jeffrey was actually pretty normal up until the age of four. Jeffrey had to correct a double hernia which had caused a difference in his body and actions. By the time he hit his teenage years, he had very little to no friends, and was very tense acting with most things. At just the age of 14, he started to have compulsions towards necrophilia and thoughts of murder as well. Dahmer’s victim had escaped and was walking down the side of the road until the cops had stopped him. The cops then proceeded to question him as to what had happened and he explained that some weird guy had drugged him. The cops then proceeded to go back to the apartment where they had found the pictures and body parts dismembered. Whenever Dahmer went to court he had at first pleaded not guilty to all charges. Although, whenever he was being interrogated by the cops he had stated the complete opposite. He eventually took a plea to guilty by virtue of sanity. The defense then questioned the things that Dahmer had done to his victims, trying to prove their point that no sane man would do such things. The prosecution decided against that and claimed that he was sane and knew what he was doing while choosing to still commit the crimes. After deliberating this case for ten hours they had decided that he was guilty as well as …show more content…
The reason that he was diagnosed with this is because of how his childhood was and the way he reacted with other people. The problems had started in his adolescent years and then followed him throughout his adulthood as well. Dahmer’s father had stated that he realized whenever his son was very young that he had issues with making eye contact and also showed difficulties with reacting with others. A psychiatrist who actually provided a diagnosis throughout the trial claimed that Jeffrey Dahmer was a psychotic. Jeffrey had been suffering with these illnesses for a very long time. Jeffrey had several hallucinations and the psychiatrist also made a statement that he was a sadistic maniac. This was not an issue at trial for the simple fact that the judge had made the statement that Jeffrey was sane and knew what he was doing. Dahmer wasn’t treated for his issues because he wasn’t considered as
According to WGBH Education Foundation (2014), out of the court cases that plead insanity only 1% of those cases is a criminals outcome affected. Therefore, the few cases that are changed by the plea of insanity are very significant and have to meet certain standards. Jeffrey Dahmer had many mental illnesses but was not considered insane enough to add to this statistic. Jeffrey Dahmer’s case was not the most significant point in the courts understanding of mental illness because he was able to decide if an action was right or wrong, he was not considered insane, and pleading insanity did not benefit his outcome. Dahmer knew exactly what he was doing each time he killed, and he knew it was wrong. One psychiatrist alleged that Dahmer had proved his sanity by “remembering to reach for a condom” before copulating with his “dead corpses” or their dissected body parts (I Carried It 3). The psychiatrist testified that Dahmer’s capacity to delay gratification and his capacity for impulse control showed he could conform his conduct to social norms (I Carried It 3). Although this information seems true and logical, there were still some psychiatrists who disagreed and seemed to be defending Dahmer. One Italian-born psychiatrist, for example, explained his doubts that Dahmer had actually eaten any of his victims, despite evidence from Dahmer’s apartment, as well as, Dahmer’s confession to having “tenderized, sautéed, and sampled of the heart, biceps, and thigh muscles of several appealing victims out of curiosity”;
