Sacrifice; Exploring the Impact on the Mirabal Sisters “Nothing great was ever accomplished without making sacrifices” (Anonymous). Las Mariposas meaning “The Butterflies” sparked a revolution. In order for the revolution to kick off, three strong, outspoken women had their lives taken away. The sisters didn’t make grand gestures; they took small steps, and they planned every detail. In The Time Of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, she shows that you can’t rebel against something unless you’re willing to sacrifice everything.

In the novel "In the time of the butterflies" the Mirabel sisters are sisters who live in the Dominican Republic under the dictator Rafel Trujillo. Everyone pretends to agree with his decisions and go along with the flow except the Mirabel sisters. They are strong courageous butterflies who sometimes face cowardice.

In 1960, three sisters Minerva, Patria, and María Teresa are members of a secret movement against Trujillo-- all except for Dedé, the surviving sister. Minerva was the second oldest and the strongest of the Mirabal sisters. “She was always into her wrong and rights” and that’s why so many people (Mostly women) honor her till this day. Trujillo was a dictator of their country who never liked anyone to go against his word and if they did he ’d kill them and make it seem like the person did it him or herself . When Minerva was a kid she always looked up to him until her friend from school told her stories showing the real him, and that’s when everything began to change.

In the Dominican Republic, a leader named Trujillo oppresses the people of the country hurting everyone who happens to get in his way. It was Minerva, one of the sisters, who spoke out and declared the cruelty the people are faced with. Her passion and leadership is shown from the very beginning as a child. Her influence also carried on to the other sisters making them become more strong in their beliefs. Sadly, the other sisters had plans and their own ideas of how to live their lives.

In chapter 11 of In the Time of Butterflies, a positive aspect of prison for Maria Teresa is the strong relationships she built with the other women because it gave her something to depend on while she was going through tough times. On April 8, Maria Teresa wrote about her conversations with the other women in prison. Her and another lady Magdalena started talking about the strong connection that all the women shared in jail. After the conversation began between the two, the other women came over to Maria Teresa and Magdalena and started to share their ideas and opinions. All the women were starting to come together as a group and their relationships were getting stronger.

Liliana Villa In this section of In the Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez uses various literary elements specifically interior monologue, and figurative language to show how Mate discovers she is willing to sacrifice herself for the movement. Mate was taken by officers in hopes she could be used as persuasion towards Leonardo through torture. When Leonardo tells the officers to leave her out of it, the officers in turn beat Leonardo. Mate, being in shock, began screaming for them to stop, she claims “It felt like my very own stomach was being punched”, which shows at first Mate was only thinking about what was happening to her own life.

Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies is a work of historical fiction set in the Dominican Republic that focuses on the four Mirabal sisters who bond together to rebel against the corrupt leader of their country, Rafael Trujillo. The four Mirabal sisters, Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and María Teresa form closer relationships with each other as they figure out a way to bring down the tyranny of Rafael Trujillo. Although they have a mutual goal, each of the Mirabal sisters has different feelings and thoughts throughout this time period. The theme of coming-of-age and identify is best exemplified through the character of María Teresa, known as Mate, through the ways she matures throughout the novel and becomes her own person who stands up for what she believes in.

From the moment that the Dominican republic was free from Trujillo’s dictatorship, contrasting viewpoints have come up regarding the sacrifices of the Mirabal sisters. While some argue that the Mirabal sisters sacrifices were not beneficial and worthwhile to the revolution because it resulted in the orphaning of their children and three young lives were lost. Others argue that the Mirabal sisters sacrifices were effective for the revolution since it changed the future of their country. I deem the sisters sacrifices are justifiable because their sacrifices had an important purpose. Isn’t it true that Trujillo's was absolutely in power for 31 years however, because of the three young sisters his cruel regime ended.

Throughout history, women have made a name for themselves. By rising up and fighting for something that they believed in, the Mirabal sisters made a name for themselves in the Dominican Republic and in Julia Alvarez’s novel In the Time of the Butterflies. By applying a theory to a novel, readers can relate the book to the world they are living in today (Davidson). Feminism can be defined as a dynamic philosophy and social movement that advocates for human rights and gender equality (“Feminism”). Feminist Theory involves looking at how women in novels are portrayed, how female characters are reinforcing stereotypes or undermining them, and the challenges that female characters face (Davidson).

In the short story "The fly," by Katherine Mansfield, portrays two men having a conversation on an afternoon in the character "The boss" office. The conversation comes with small talk and nice gesture of whiskey added into the mix. The character "Mr. Woodfield" begins to discuss the boss 's son 's grave of nicely decorated it was. Mansfield illustrates on the idea that the boss is grieves harshly over the death of his son. People express their grief in many ways, some people hide their grief while others may show it vividly.
