Upton Sinclair authored “The Flivver King: A Story of Ford-America” in 1937 to summon the auto manufacturing industry to join worker’s unions. He chronicled Ford’s accomplishments in the early 20th century as it relates to the history of his production of the Ford vehicles. He inserts a pivotal fictional character, Abner Shutt, as well as Abner’s fictional family members to advance his ideologies. The publication does an excellent job of relating Henry Ford’s story from the beginning of his career to the end, but I found myself confused at times due to the fictional characters adopted by Sinclair. Flivver King generally was a well-written book that engages in superfluous granularity of how Henry Ford started his successful automobile business, …show more content…
The storyline took place on Bagley Street in the city of Detroit. The book began with the fictional character, Abner Shutt, running to his mother hollering, “There’s a feller down the street says he’s goin’ to make a wagon that’ll run without a hoss” (3).” Everyone in town thought Ford was crazy; with the exception of a handful of little children and Abner Shutt. In the publication, Abner Shutt articulates how Ford’s Company progresses through the years, how Ford deals with the problems in the world, and how Ford navigates within his own company. The company had invaluable successes that dramatically increased the production of cars. One such innovation was the idea and implementation of the conveyor …show more content…
“There came another panic in the fall of 1907, which filled the city with idle and starving men, and taught humility to those who kept their jobs” (20-21). But, Ford was able to make it out of most of the situations and was still selling his cars. At times reading the book I was confused with where we were in the world, what wars were going on, and how close in time they were. I would have preferred that the book would have focused less on the fictional character, and to have told the story through Henry Ford’s eyes. I feel that there would have been less confusion as to what was going on in the world during his
The book “ANDREW CARNEGIE and the Rise of Big Business” written by Harold C. Libesay, explains Andrew Carnegies life with chronological events beginning how he and his family moved from Dumferline, Scotland in November of 1835. This books thesis is on how his skills and experienced he learned before starting Carnegie Steel intersect with each other and show how he dominated the steel industry. Carnegie’s industrial career is explained in depth how he acquired the knowledge on how businesses worked, as a manager capitalist then leading into a entrepreneur. The authors purpose I believe was to show not only Carnegies life leading to just Carnegie Steel, but also how determination and hard work can help you achieve success. This book on Andrew Carnegie explains well on in detail how Carnegie’s came to create his dominating steel industry empire.

Many American now began to fight for better wages so they could participate in the purchasing of the consumer goods such as the Model T car. Ford was creating a new class of living for the United States not only were they compensating their employees better than most companies but he was lowering the price of cars so that American would be able to purchase them on their income. After the creation of the assembly line Ford could lower the price of his cars by over half from $700 in 1910 to $316 in 1916. The car could be purchased by the working class of America.
The most interesting of Ford's early films is Bucking Broadway (1917), and it does exactly what its title suggests. When Cheyenne Harry’s (Harry Carey) romance with a girl on the ranch hits hard times, she leaves for New York with a slimy city man, and he heads after her. This allows Ford to stage his first truly epic scene as Harry and his gang storm the streets of New York on horseback. In Ford’s films we tend to learn most about what a character is thinking not by what’s said but by how character’s throw glances towards one another.

Ford demonstrates a social Darwinist not only because he exhibits the successful outcome of someone who has ideal traits for survival, but because he encourages others who live promising lives as well. “A man’s personal advancement depended entirely and immediately upon his work” (My life and work 98). Ford always made sure that men were given a fair chance toward advancements in his factory. Those who held positions of authority started from the bottom up; they all had to work just as hard to prove their worth.

Henry Ford made many great things and created many innovations in the modern world but Ford also had a grim side filled with hypocrisy, bigotry, Nazism, and anti-Semitism. In Mid-1920 Ford had purchased a printing press in Dearborn called the Dearborn independent. Ford then published a very controversial book and a string of newspapers titled “The International Jew: The World’s Problem”. This anti-Semitic propaganda was spread out to various Ford distributors and was given to anyone who came in a Ford Dealer. The papers were also placed in all Ford cars.
