Rhetoric is prevalent in everyday sights; from a billboard to a television commercial, the literary skill is used to influence the intended audience. Rhetoric has been important and influential in literature throughout history. Due to the historic event of the first man landing on the moon, many articles and cartoons filled with pride and excitement while others had more of a negative tone were published. Regardless of their tone, the rhetoric was present and necessary in all of the published items; whether the publications were successful is another story. The rhetoric, in the article by Ayn Rand and cartoon by Herblock, will be analyzed for their how the speaker, audience, and subject impacts the text, the appeal to ethos, logos and pathos, …show more content…
Block was an American author and cartoonist whose cartoon, Transported, was in the Washington Post. Block’s intended audience was everyone on Earth without a doubt. Block’s cartoon depicts a man up on the partially light crescent moon watching television with his back to Earth, which is lower than the moon, covered in dark clouds which have the words ‘war’ ‘poverty’ and ‘prejudice’. The man on the moon is so intensely focusing on the television, it looks like he is afraid to miss a single commercial. Since all of the man’s attention is all focused on the television while he is one the moon, he is, literally and figuratively turning is back on the world, which contains much larger issues. Block uses ethos and pathos in his cartoon to get his audience to discover the purpose he is putting out there. Block uses ethos by showing the issues on Earth are more important than the moon landing by making the clouds with the words in them alone are larger than the moon and the man sitting on it. This is an effective use of ethos because what is happening at home should be the number one priority, but some are too busy being entertained to see that has displayed in Block’s cartoon. Pathos is in the piece in the shading of everything in the picture and the sizing of everything. The adequate light being given by the moon is nothing compared to the mass of darkness surrounding the Earth. The dark letters and shading shows the seriousness as well as the fear that should be felt when being surrounded with war, poverty, and prejudice. Herblock is successful in his work of trying to get his audience to come to realize that the moon landing was nothing but a distraction, but not everyone will completely understand his appeals to ethos and pathos because of the in depth thinking
CEC Assignment In the cartoon "Transported," Herbert Block appeals to logos 1 by defining the terms of the situation. For example, Block's drawing shows a careless man watching TV on the moon, while the world is suffering from war, poverty, and prejudice. Block is demonstrating the distraction of Americans due to things not of necessary import, rather than the real problems on Earth. The American people are more concerned with the Moon Landing, which seems to be fine, rather than the "in your face" problems of Earth.
In the book Anthem their society is way different from ours. They are not allowed to be individual or say the word “I”. They can’t have names, instead they are in groups and have group names. The speaker is a critical writer from the onion. This was written during the 1997, a few years after the so called “Cola War”. The “Cola War” was an absurd case and is the target of satire, in the article false interviews were made where it showed how many men were “affected” by the war. The critical writer criticizes how America turns something insignificant into an enormous ruckus and about how both cola company 's value who will triumph over the consumers top choice to an extreme extent.
There are many examples of irony in Anthem that the author uses to carry the plot and deepen the story and an example of irony that some people don't get until later in the book is the idea of "we". Therefore it is ironic that a person wouldn't know the word for one's self. The definition of irony is "the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. " The use of we is to really push the idea that Equality 7-2521 only thinks as a group. This example is dramatic irony because the readers of Anthem know that Equality 7-2521 is an individual yet still calls himself "we".
Tamar Demby, writer of the rhetorical analysis in response to Anne Applebaum’s article on nuclear powers, evaluated that Applebaum relied more on pathos and failed to include ethos and logos in her argument. Demby claims that because she failed to do so, her article was weak and ineffective. Demby develops her position by including examples of how Applebaum poorly used the rhetorical strategies, such as how she writes about her argument, but does not succeed in providing facts and examples to support it. Demby also suggests ways on how Applebaum could have written her article to make it more effective. One suggestion was that Applebaum should have established “a fair-minded ethos and built a more fact-based
However, in the political cartoon, "Transported" exhibits a strong pathos as well, but it shows that though man may have been successful in landing on the moon, it did not solve any problems here on earth. Each one of these pieces are strong and effective in their rhetorical appeals, making up in one area where they may have lacked in another. All four give very important opinions and views, whether similar or different, on a very complicated time as well as a time of one of the most impressive accomplishments man-kind

Controversial material in Anthem, by Ayn Rand, includes brief use of profanity, issues of morality, and exploitation of women. Also, controversy surrounding Ayn Rand’s work is the over-emphasizing of individualistic ideas she displays, as well as the adoration of egotism.

This passage best describes pathos because there is an emotional appeal and it appeals to deeply held values and beliefs. The author is using pathos by sharing the experience he or she had while interacting with these many poor families and it also gave them understanding about their lifestyles and what situations those poor families might have to
Grant-Davie describes thoroughly the term rhetorical situation and how the development of the definition and its constituents has contributed to the discovery of the motives and responses behind any discourse. The analysis of rhetorical situations could determine the outer or inner influences of the rhetors, the audience, and their particular constraints. Grant Davie supports his claims by using the earlier definitions of scholars and teachers as his foundation. He also addresses his own analysis drawn by life experienced discourses which it also helps the reader understand the causes of rhetorical situations. This is important because it teaches any writer or reader to analyze a situation and think about the options and paths it could lead

Argumentative Text Essay In the book Nickel and Dimed, written by Barbara Ehrenreich, the author argues how challenging it is to live in a life of poverty. If they don’t like what somebody does, they push them deeper, until they cannot see who they are. For an example let us go to page 63. Equality hides a secret from a council member, and through the bare of bickering, Equality is then sentenced to being lashed bare. Because a person utilizing what would be known as freedom of speech, they get whipped? What world is this to ask for the basic human right to be stripped from the humans themselves?
In the “The Amnesia Machine”, the author, Shaun Tan took advantages of using irony in the ice cream van and the positioning of the text within the newspaper to be able to spread his message to his audiences about how all of us has been living pretty blindly in the society these days. Tan has used the technique of create ironic images in his ice cream van inside the picture. The van was clearly represented as the government these days. It was similar to some sort of a brainwashed machine where it completely emptied everyone’s minds and in this case, we can relate to us as we might have been brain-washed by our government. For instance in the text, Tan talked about how there is one person who was extremely curious the machine so he went out to the park and decided to find out what it is.
