The $2.13 per hour figure is true, but waiters/waitresses never see that amount. It is required statewide that any minimum wage employee earn at least $9 (“Massachusetts Law about Minimum Wage”). No matter how complex the author makes the convention of tipping seem, no one is getting paid $2.13 in actuality. The only purpose of using that statistic is to exacerbate the idea of feeling sorry for these individuals. Following that reference, the author sets blame upon management and restaurant chain executives. The haphazard “pointing of the finger”, which is often found in rhetorical arguments, perpetuates the grand scheme of poor versus wealthy, powerless versus powerful, and minimum wage employee versus big bad restaurant executive. Although this is presented in a professional manner, and with suppressed indignation towards restaurant chains, the basic ideology held by the author is implanted in the minds of the readers. Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. In some instances where Stockett uses ethos, pathos is also included in her writing.
In the article, “Don’t Blame the Eater,” David Zinczenko argues it is the fast food industry’s fault for the nation 's growing obesity epidemic. Furthermore, he believes people should not be blamed for their own obesity. Zinczenko argues fast-food is much more available to the fast paced lifestyle people live in rather than consuming healthy alternatives. He also discusses the fact so many people are on a low budget, it is then best and more inexpensive for them to consume fast-food. Zinczenko states a claim that the fast-food industry “would do well to protect themselves, and their customers, by providing the nutrition information people need” (Zinczenko 464).
Essentially, Washington D.C. was one of the cities that established raised wages. In Jason Russell’s article, D.C. Lost Restaurant Jobs After Min. Wage Hike, he describes the repercussions placed on employees once the minimum wage was raised. Russell explains that after Washington D.C.’s minimum wage rose to $10.50 an hour in 2015, increases in restaurant jobs failed to keep up with the quick growth it carried during the economic recovery and further explains how restaurant jobs fell by 1,400 in D.C. (Russell 1).
Service Not Included But Arguments Are In “Service not Included: Restaurant industry serves up injustice to workers”, the author, Kathleen Kingsbury uses rhetorical techniques to inform her audience of the hardships faced by restaurant workers at a time when “Timepressed Americans eat out for at least five meals a week, and the average household spent $2,620 on food away from home…”. The author uses the three different classes of rhetorical arguments to persuade persuades her audience to support securing and increasing the hourly wage of workers in the restaurant industry, and uses her understanding The Boston Globe’s target audience to craft a convincing article.
The authors arguable point goes on to talk about the problem with tipping and how the “less discretion you have in the matter, the more useless it is as an economic incentive” (Lewis 21). Lewis’ third point was not a hundred percent convincing “The Case Against Tipping” was a great essay; however, it lacked statistics. If the author gave more statistical facts the essay would in the end be more logical and the author would have better luck pulling in the readers. The examples located in this essay were organized quite well, into a chronological order; therefore, made the entire essay more interesting. Michael included both pathos and ethos into this essay which brought life and significance to each example he presented.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Taylor Scuorzo d Rhetorical Analysis 3/20/23 Rhetorical Analysis Doing benevolent and selfless things for others can occasionally lead to adverse results. In his enlightening and illuminating commencement address given at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 19, 2018, Jason Reynolds emotionally persuades and informs the graduates at the college through the use of anecdotes and metaphors to show that ignoring the significant problems of the world will not help us fix them. To strengthen his speech, Reynolds uses past personal experiences and the comparison of objects to others to help prove the theme portrayed throughout the speech.
In Tony Mirabelli’s writing, “Learning to Serve”, Mirabelli completes an ethnographic study of the service industry. Mirabelli writes on a topic he is quite familiar with, being a waiter. Mirabelli discusses the complexity of being a waiter, although most of these complexities are unknown to people outside of the discourse community. Mirabelli uses his ethnographic study to undermine criticism towards waiters. The main critique Mirabelli rebuts in his writing is that being a waiter does not require skill.
Schlosser argues America’s lives are solely based off of fast food. Throughout his writing he describes how common it is in our society in which fast food is ordered, sold, and consumed. Everywhere you go, every glimpse you take, every corner you pass, fast food is being sold everywhere. Schlosser describes throughout his text the commonality of fast food in restaurants, airports, schools, and large chained stores available nationwide, in which each compress the similarity of fast food. Not only does he include how common fast food is in an American’s life, but he describes how Americans will spend more of their money in their wallet on fast food than they would on other livelihood essentials.
“Why Tipping Is Wrong,” an article found in the New York Times discusses the issue of lower minimum wage for tipped workers. Writer, Saru Jayaraman, the director of the Food Labor Research Institute at Berkeley, argues for the reformation of the law that allows a lower minimum wage for tipped workers. She presents her argument by targeting those who go to restaurants, lawmakers, the waiters/waitresses, and even the restaurant itself. By targeting this specific audience, she is able to speak to those who interact with those working in the industry and those who will be able to make a change in order to fix it. Rhetorical devices are vital in order for arguments to be successful.
Eric Schlosser is an author and an investigative journalist who “tries to explore subjects ignored by the mainstream media and give a voice to people at the margins of society (1).” Mr. Schlosser uses the knowledge he gained at both Princeton University and Oxford to write extraordinary books based off his hard work and investigating. In this book, Mr. Schlosser looks at the fast-food industry and the effects it has had on people 's lives. He begins with the history of McDonalds and then branches out to the history of the associated industries of fast food. Eric Schlosser points out important issues such as good nutrition, food safety, animal welfare, worker rights and sustainable agriculture.

Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the American Meal by Eric Schlosser and The Jungle by Upton Sinclair convey corporations treating the public inhumanely. The books discuss how the companies will fix their prices, the lengths they will go to avoid unionization within their establishments, highlight how their employees are struggling to survive on their low wages, and provide a look into the risks of working for these corporations.
In Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson’s Chew On This, the two authors discuss the upbringing and evolution of the phenomenon that is fast food, which much of American business thrives off of today. With nearly 31,000 McDonald’s spread across 120 countries, the habit of eating fast food has become a routine. Schlosser and Wilson examine everything from the birth of the industry, specifically circling around McDonald’s, to the aspects present today which have largely strayed from its original ideals. McDonald’s did not start off as a fast food joint, however. By 1940 the automobile was flourishing, and drive-in restaurants were created (beginning with Kirby’s Pig Stand); people would pull up next to these establishments and waitresses, or “carhops,”

The fast food industry was one other major forces to shape modern life in the U.S. When asked to think of a word to describe America, majority of citizens as well as immigrants would say the “fast food”. For example,in 2001 a rebel group led by Jose Bove decided to protest the restrictions on trade set by Unites States in France and as a form of protest they destroyed a symbol of United States, a local McDonald 's, which demonstrates that McDonald 's is a representation of American culture and thus eating at this establishment is seen as an American tradition as well as the most American action a tennager can perfrm.
