Rhetorical Appeals
The three elements of rhetorical appeals were analyzed in Po Bronson’s article “Learning to Lie,” published February 10, 2008. In the article, Po Bronson uses rhetorical devices to persuade the reader that a reasonable one-third of teens lie to their parents. Bronson discusses about young kids learning to lie and what their causes may be. To better convey his points to the reader, Bronson uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is trying to convincing the audience and a persuader by trying to achieve credibility. Logos is the appeal of logic and reasoning, and lastly, pathos is using emotion to persuade the reader. Through these appeals, Bronson tries to address parents about their children lying, their causes and effects, and showing them what their children is capable of.

This is one of the reason why kids start lying to one another. Another event that occurred during the experiment is finding that parents support lies when they are “white lies.” Given a price for lying allows the child to be encouraged to lie more in the future. This concept is analogous to praising a dog for doing a good trick. Therefore, this influence of parents to encourage their kids to tell white lies encourages them to tell more lies in the future. Dr. Victoria Talwar, an assistant professor at Montreal's McGill University is an expert at child lying behavior says that they lie to protect themselves (Talwar, 4). The lying starts by giving an excuse to get out of trouble. Kids already know the what will happen if they were caught doing something wrong so it is logical that they cover it up with lies. An effective rhetoric has the ability to persuade an audience using the three appeals: pathos, ethos, and logos. Using pathos, a writer is able to appear to its intended audience emotions. Rhetorical Analysis of David Brook’s “People Like Us” The goal of argumentative writing implies the fact of persuading an audience that an idea is valid, or maybe more valid than somebody else’s. With the idea of making his argument successful, and depending on which topic is being established, the author uses different strategies which Aristoteles defined as “Greek Appeals”. Pathos, the first appeal, generates emotions in the reader, and it may have the power of influencing what he believes. Ethos, or ethical appeals, convince the reader by making him believe in the author’s credibility.
In the essay "The Way We Lie," Stephanie Ericsson explains a few of the many reasons why we lie, "We avoid confrontation, we spare people's feelings, we conveniently forget, we keep secrets" (1992, p. 159). We want to avoid a big argument or fight that might make matters worse. We lie to protect another from the truth because it might be unbearable. A lie can come out of our mouth without much thought.

Rhetorical Analysis Most people tend to believe that lying is a way of life, that without it the whole world could crumble and fall. While some tend to believe that any form of lying is a sin and there should be consequences. One author, Stephanie Ericsson, wrote “The Ways We Lie” published in 1993 she talks about how we all lie, it has become an everyday chore to make life easier. She begins by trying to strengthen the bond between the reader and writer showing how they are one of the same. She does this by referencing past experiences, adding informed opinions, and using quotes from other well acknowledged authors, her argument is strong throughout the whole article that lying isn’t just evil, it can be used for good when used the right way.
With this article having a very strong analysis evidence such as the appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos. I agree that this article is very effective. Throughout this essay, I will analyze the article through its context of rhetorical analysis and evaluation of argument claims, and logos, pathos, and ethos.
There are many writers that affect our emotions or that make us think that his or her statements are reasonable, whether they are authors of books, or script writers for a movie or a play. In Morgan Spurlock’s film, Supersize Me, he uses three common rhetorical strategies: ethos, pathos, and logos. He uses all three effectively, however pathos has the greatest effect out of all three rhetorical strategies. Spurlock uses ethos, or ethical appeal, in his film.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
In 1741, Jonathan Edwards delivered a sermon called “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” to a congregation in Enfield, Connecticut. This sermon was so influential and poignant that today it has transformed into a piece of literature that many study in classes. This bit of literature is so utterly jam-packed with the use of rhetorical appeals, often referred to as ethos, pathos, and logos. These three appeals are derived from ancient Greece, or more precisely, the Greek philosopher Aristotle. Ethos appeals to the audience’s sense of trust, pathos, to their sense of emotion, and logos, to their sense of logic.
So really what’s the point? Parents lie to us which breaks trust within the family, makes our children believe in a fake society and you are setting them up for certain disappointment when they eventually find out the truth. Parents shouldn’t be lying in the first place to their credulous children. Firstly, by continually corrupting our children with these lies we are breaking the foundations of trust within the family.
Everyone is told at a young age that lies are bad or that you shouldn’t lie and for children of younger ages that is a great policy to go by. But as life becomes less sheltered, lying becomes more of an everyday occurrence. I constantly find myself lying about little details. Most of the time it’s with people I barely know. I don’t know exactly why I chose to lie, made it that when someone assumes something to be true about myself, I’d rather not embarrass them.
Clancy 's article presents why people lie to the ones they love the most. In his article, Clancy argues that people lie for the need for love and that honesty isn 't everything in a relationship. He claims that lying is not taught, it is learned. Children lie not because they don 't want to get in trouble but because they are afraid to lose the love of their parents. Clancy states that "People who find themselves most betrayed by the lies of lovers are those who have the most unrealistic expectations about truthfulness."
Many people wonder is it wrong to lie or are there some situation where lying is the best option? In the book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon, Mark Haddon shifts Christopher’s outlook on honesty and changed his outlook dramatically. Many people, including Christopher, believe in the statement “honesty is the best policy.” However while Christopher becomes more independent, he realizes that in some situations being dishonest might be the best answer. When his father lies to Christopher, Christopher follows his father’s actions and starts to comprehend when he must lie.
Writers do their job because they want to express their ideas to make an impact on the readers. Sometimes they want to convince their audience through persuasion. They can do it using different rhetorical elements such as logos, ethos, and pathos. These are Greek words that mean logic, character, and emotion consecutively.
The faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion known as pathos, logos, and ethos these rhetorical devices have always been used in literature, improving and refining composition. Many authors and speakers rely on these techniques to help deliver their point across. Pathos, Ethos, and Logos all have different purposes; Pathos appeals to emotion, while ethos appeal, means to convince an audience of the author’s credibility or character. Logos can be recognized as an appeal to logic and facts. These following texts have occupied the usage of these techniques.
