Rhetorical Analysis Of Graham Hill's Speech On TED Talk

In senator Rand Presidential speech, his main idea is his vision for America. In his presidential speech he use the three rhetorical appeals logos, pathos, and ethos. “ I have a vision for America, I want to be the return of prosperity, a government restrained by the constitution.” Senator Rand tells what wants to do for America. He wants to make America better with his vision.

Discussing Race In Jay Smooth’s TEDx talk he talks about how to make race an easier topic to discuss. If we can take the mindset that we are either racist or not racist and begin to realize that non-racist people can think and say racist things, race might be able to become a less touchy subject to discuss. Jimmy Carter was highly involved and persuasive regarding politics. Carter had opened Georgia’s government offices to women and people of color (“Jimmy Carter”). This shows that Carter was not a biased man. He believed everyone deserved the same opportunities. Because of this elevated status, Ethos emerges as a secondary rhetorical device that aids Tom in delivering his message.

When crafting an argument an author must find a way to appeal to their audience. The three different types of rhetorical appeals are ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is the appeal to ethics, pathos is the appeal to emotion, and logos is the appeal to logic. By using one, two, or all of these appeals, an author can better convince an audience of his/her claims. In Gary Slutkin’s TED Talk, he used all three rhetorical appeals.

Melvin Russell explains in his speech that police officers need to do a better job of working with the public and treating them as if they are a customer. Russell has been a police officer himself for nearly 40 years, and is the Chief of the Community Partnership Division of the Baltimore Police Department. The TedTalk, “I Love Being a Police Officer, but We Need Reform,” by Melvin Russell was very persuasive and proposed a strong argument by using pathos and having an engaging voice, being credible in his words,

TED is one of the non-profit organizations that does help to share different ideas of different people to the world through their persuasive talk. Sir Ken Robinson, in his Ted Talk, discusses how systems of public education disregard the creativity as it is an important factor related with the growth of students, academically. Robinson does focus on the creativity by arguing through different examples, which does make audience, and other viewers to think on this issue and take action which is being ignored by public education system. The use of pathos, ethos, and logos while his talk regarding creativity in school makes the case of education system entertaining and understand, by giving proper examples with the use of humorous tone.

Thesis: In Jackson Katz’s Ted Talk, “Violence Against Women – it’s a Man’s Issue”, he argues that men are bystanders to the violence that happens and believes that men should speak up against this violence. To support his arguments, Katz states his credibility and the work that he and his colleague has done. To add-on, Katz made examples on how it’s easy to manipulate simple sentence structures and the violence that occurred. Similarly, he gives analogies that this violence affects men, not just women. Katz effectively uses logical arguments using what’s very common to support his argument.

In the TED Talk ‘Why we do what we do’, Tony Robbins, motivational speaker and life coach, helps people understand the reasons behind their actions in order to show how they can reach their full potential and use it to help and understand others. The rhetorical and speaking strategies used in his speech aided him in his effort to reach his audience. The ethos and pathos were very strong and bolstered his message, but his attempt at being logical did not improve the quality of his speech, and affected the extent his audience will take his message to heart.
