On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass gave his remarks at the Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society in Rochester, New York in honor of the Fourth of July. Douglass uses his platform to highlight the irony of inviting a once enslaved man to speak on a day that celebrates freedom, liberty, and justice. To challenge Americans celebration of the Fourth of July, Douglass exposes the hypocrisy of America’s value: they preach and celebrate freedom, yet condone the enslavement of individuals on the basis of skin color. As an ingenious orator, why would Douglass carelessly praise the founding fathers and abruptly criticize the American citizens if he wanted to gain their support?

He writes, “Oppression makes a wise man mad. [The founding fathers] were wise men, and if they did not go mad, they became restive under this treatment” (3). Douglass cleverly foreshadows the section when he brutally denounces the American citizen. While Douglass hints at the founding fathers in this section, this section also applies to him. After being oppressed for several years as a slave and a supposed freed man, Douglass has become “mad.” Douglass channels his frustration from his experience in bondage into this speech. While he builds up his frustration throughout the speech, Douglass becomes “restive” when officially denounces American citizens. The language that Douglass uses creates an ominous, uncontrollable storm. Douglass writes that “with [the founding fathers], justice, liberty and humanity were “final;” not slavery and oppression” (5). By using the word “final,” Douglass clearly highlights the expectations of the founding fathers. By revolting against the King of Britain, the founding fathers expected to establish a nation that endorses “justice, liberty and humanity” (5). Interestingly, Douglass for the same men that opposed slavery and oppression, Douglass did not mention that the founding fathers were once slave owners in this passage. By omitting the fact that the founding fathers were slave owners, Douglass creates a perfect exemplar for the citizen to compare themselves. He also fails to mention this fact so that it does not contradict his later claim that slavery is evil. If he was to mention that the founding fathers were slave owners, he would have inadvertently destroy his argument and sabotage the legitimacy and validity of his authority as a speaker. Douglass does not purely want to praise the founding father of their good deeds. Rather, praising the founding fathers strengthens his rhetoric as he will “contrast [those good deeds] with these degenerate times” (5). He starts by addressing the whitewashed image of humanity that is forced upon him and other minorities. During this time, slavery was viewed as an economic profit and a source of free labor. This resulted in an America that was built entirely on the backs of slaves as they were, “erecting houses, constructing bridges, building ships, working in metals of brass, iron and copper” (Douglass). The idea of racism came secondary as it worked hand in hand with keeping the racial hierarchy needed to maintain slavery. However, racism involves more than just the people trapped in servitude.
Douglass establishes his credibility and authority on the issue of slavery and inequality in the United States by drawing on his own experience and expertise. He begins the speech by introducing himself as a former slave and expressing his sadness and disappointment at the Fourth of July festivities which celebrate the nation’s independence while ignoring the ongoing oppression of African Americans. He says, “I am not included within the pale of this glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us.” By acknowledging his own identity as a former slave, Douglass gives himself immediate credibility on the issue of slavery and inequality.

Fredric Douglass wrote, “What to the Slave is Fourth of July” in 1852. In this speech to the American public, Douglass states how great of a country American “was” and how great the forefathers “were”. In contrast to those statements he professes his reasoning for freeing slaves. However, Mary Rowlandson wrote, “A True History of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson” in 1682. This captive narrative takes place during the King Philips war, and depicts how the native Americans treated their prisoners of war.
Frederick Douglass was a great writer, but he wasn’t always. He was an escaped slave who used that in his speeches as a topic to gain the attention of his audience. His audience was a seemingly sympathetic one and got to them through rhetorical questions. Douglass wanted to convey the message that there are many changes that need to be made.

In Frederick Douglass’s book, he writes accounts of his time in slavery and beyond. Throughout the book, Douglass writes about not only the physical hardships slaves endured, but the mental and emotional hardships as well. In Chapter X, Douglass describes a battle he had with a temporary slave owner named Mr. Covey. After the fight concludes, Douglass writes, “This battle with Mr. Covey was the turning point in my career as a slave. It rekindled the few expiring embers of freedom, and revived within me a sense of my own manhood.
He proclaims that "…While we are…living, moving, acting, thinking, planning, living in families as husbands, wives and children, and, above all, confessing and worshipping the Christian's God, and looking hopefully for life and immortality beyond the grave, we are called upon to prove that we are men!" By showing the mundanity of the slave, Douglass shows the audience that the slaves are human and therefore unable to be considered property. He forces his audience to examine their own lives and realize their similarities to the slaves and the hypocrisy of slavery. He doesn't give his audience a chance to disagree with his stance on slavery because he makes such a blunt argument. Douglass asks again, "Must I undertake to prove that the slave is a man?
The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass shows the imbalance of power between slaves and their masters. In his book, Douglass proves that slavery is a destructive force not only to the slaves, but also for the slaveholders. “Poison of the irresponsible power” that masters have upon their slaves that are dehumanizing and shameless, have changed the masters themselves and their morality(Douglass 39). This amount of power and control in contact with one man breaks the kindest heart and the purest thoughts turning the person evil and corrupt. Douglass uses flashbacks that illustrate the emotions that declare the negative effects of slavery.
Douglass claims that America will forever be oblivious to all of the hardships and struggles and burdens slaves have endured for the past hundred years. Since he feels so strongly about slaves getting the justice they so rightly deserve, Douglass warns the audience that even if his language is not right, nothing he says will be untrue. He wants the audience to be able to easily realize how slavery really is the sin of America. Coming from slavery himself, he despised the Fugitive Slave Law for the simple fact that slavery “has no right to exist anywhere.” I find a critical part of his speech, is the attention getting device. Since this speech was given on the Fourth of July, Douglas starts off his speech by sharing gratitude for our nation’s founding fathers.
He questions his audience of the significance of Independence Day to slaves, and he answers it in an extremely contrasting way: “your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; … your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery,” that the celebration is “a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages.” Douglass dismisses the national pride, characterizing it as a mere expression of people’s ignorance. The antithesis, with “greatness” being “vanity,” “sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless,” and “shouts of liberty and equality” being “hollow mockery,” provokes shock and anger from the audience, who have just been part of it and are now degraded as “savages.” However, Douglass was not trying to be inflammatory but provocative, witnessing the pathetic enthusiasm in the anniversary, that people feel exuberant about themselves while ignoring the saddening
When most people hear the words “Fourth of July” they think about fireworks, cookouts, and sparklers. During the 1850’s, the Fourth of July served as a reminder of the many horrors and injustices in the world. On July 4, 1852, Frederick Douglass-- a former American slave, abolitionist leader and adroit speaker-- spoke in Rochester, New York about the affectation of celebrating independence. In his speech, “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery”, he claims celebrating independence is unethical when slavery is widespread. To convince the reader of his claim, he uses rhetorical questions, emotional appeal, and antithesis in hopes of shedding light and sparking action on the wrongful situation.
He declares, “to forget them [the slaves], to pass lightly over their wrongs and to chime in with the popular theme would be treason most scandalous and shocking, and would make me a reproach before God and the world,” (para. 5). He discusses that slavery is unjust, and says that celebrating freedom with slavery would be treason. This helps the audience realize that celebrating freedom in their country is not a peccadillo, and they naturally will try to right the wrong because of their moral instincts by stopping their celebration. He also says, “to him your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mock; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are to him mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy - a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages,” (para. 15). In this quote, Douglass says that celebrating liberty is covering up a crime: slavery.
