The first rhetorical device is parallelism, for Chief Joseph he uses this many times throughout his speech. For example When he says “We were like deer. They were like grizzly bears.” (p. 3) Though he was making a comparison to them and the white men, he was saying that the Nac Perce tribe was the prey and the white men were the predators. In another way of saying this, he meant that the white men had to gain the Indians trust to just backstab them and say get off our land or else we will call a war. In doing repetition he can get his point across with saying this phrase over and over again with more emotion each time he says it. During Chief Joseph’s speech, he repeats the phrase “Good words..” (p.3) with saying something meaningful with is after words like “Good words do not give me back my children.” Although he said this many times Joseph got more and more emotionally after every time. In another part of his speech he says uses it again but in a more powerful course of action; Joseph states the word “...free...” (p.4) Chief Joseph’s statement was for them to be “...free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade...” The Chief wanted the white men to hear what they were doing to them by kicking them off of there own land and telling them where to go afterward. Speech to the Virginia Convention In Patrick Henry’s “Speech to the Virginia Convention”, he persuades Loyalists to fight England by using main rhetorical devices: Diction, Allusion, Rhetorical Questions, and Appeal to ethos. Diction creates rhythm and emphasizes important ideas and images. Convincing an audience can be different, but using Allusion alleviates the audience connect to the situation. Rhetorical Questions gets people thinking and helps them see the right in the situation. You have to make yourself credible, so Patrick Henry connects his charming character to his crowd by using Appeal to ethos as well.
Patrick Henry's speech before the Virginia Congress was crafted to persuade the many men gathered there to listen. He uses several rhetorical devices to accomplish this goal, and he accomplishes it with flying colors. As you read the speech, you can see the desperation poring from Henry's words. "Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded". In this portion of the speech, he uses parallelism to reiterate that America has tried everything to stop this war from happening, but their efforts were to no avail, and it was time to begin fighting.
In Chief Tecumseh’s speech, he describes the tyranny and conflict between the united states government and the native peoples. He explains that the natives should not sell their lands, for they have no right to do so because the land belongs to all people and not one group. Tecumseh shows this when he writes, “Sell a country?! Why not sell the air, the great sea, as well as the earth” (L. 30). The air, the sea, and the earth are priceless in the eyes of many, he parallels these three with the selling of a country to demonstrate how the natives value their land.
Rhetorical Analysis Convincing people of something or to do something is not an easy task but Patrick Henry's “Speech to the Second Virginia Convention” shows how well someone can persuade people when they trust you, appeal to their emotions, or back up what you are saying with facts...ethos, pathos, and logos. The purpose of this speech is to persuade the colonist to fight against the british. Patrick is talking to the members of the virginia convention and what they need to do to become free. Patrick Henry uses ethos to help convince the audience that he knows what he's talking about and how they should trust him.
In Niccolo Machiavelli's book, The Prince (1513), he evaluates on how a prince can be a successful leader. Machiavelli’s purpose of this guidebook was to construct his argument to the rising ruler Giuliano de Medici for when he comes to power in Florence. He adopts a casual but authoritative tone in order to convince the prince that Machiavelli’s evaluation on how to be the best prince, is the right thing for the prince to do without coming off as he knows more than the prince or is trying to intimidate him.. Machiavelli’s reference to previous rulers and whether their tactics failed or succeeded helps to benefit his credibility along with his allusion to historic text. He appeals to our logic by simply stating a prince can only do what is within his power to control, and his use of an analogy furthers his argument.
On March 23,1775 Patrick Henry convinced colonists to fight against Britain by using four rhetorical devices which were allusion, imagery, one-word sentences and rhetorical questions. America in 1905, we learned, was riddled with inadequate labor laws, as well as working conditions. In order to convey her message, that these unethical statues need to be amended, Kelley uses rhetorical strategies such as pathos, parallelism, and illustration. Pathos is found throughout the entire speech, particularly emphasizing the horrific jobs the children were performing under terrible conditions and for countless hours. The descriptions of these appeal to the readers emotions, as the facts that she shares depict scenes we consider unusual even for adults.

I repeat it, sir, we must fight!” This exhibits the speaker’s inflammatory language, which calls for action, provokes anger, and triggers strong emotions.

I feel that Grimké 's main purpose when writing her article was that she wanted to inform that we are not just a skin color and women are not just to seen and not heard that people of color and women are human and they have voices that need to be heard and rights that need to be met. I find Grimke very ahead of her time and t be raised in home with slave and look past that is remarkable. I feel Douglass main purpose from his speech was to call out Americans for what they were, hypocrites. He wanted Americans to show their true colors and admit the bias monster they have become who believed in freedom for all but only for the ones that look like them. Mark Twain, an 18th century humorist, was known for his critical and satirical writing. In one of his most famous essays, “ Fenimore Coopers Literary Offenses” Twain addresses Coopers inability to realistically develop a “situation” and his failure to effectively back up his stories in order for them to be more plausible. To dramatically convey his unimpressed and sarcastic attitude, he applies biting diction, metaphors and hypophora throughout this work . By continuously using biting diction, Twain develops a mocking tone towards Fenimore Cooper’s incapability to create even the simplest of storylines. In the title of the work a sarcastic tone is evident; the word choice is utilized to reinforce the argument stating how Coopers work is an offense to the world of literature.
Abraham Lincoln in the speech, The Gettysburg Address, constructs a point of achieving a "just and lasting peace" between the North and South without retribution. Lincoln supports his assertion by justifying his beliefs of unity between the states. Lincoln's purpose is to influence the people to not allow what has been done to go to waste. He wants his audience to realize that this division will only persist if no one settles the current issues in society. Lincoln speaks in a sympathizing, determined tone to address the Americans who are mourning the loss of their loved ones and to the rest of Americans who he wants to see a change from.
