Richard M. Nixon was elected the 37th president of the United States. He was previous to his election, a member of the U.S Representatives and was a U.S Senator for California. As he came into office he strived to better our current economy and cultural divides that were at main concern during this present time. Many overlooked the things Nixon did for the United States through his presidency as he expanded foreign relations, set a foundation for environmental regulations and amazingly improved women's rights. This was because at this time American society was divided over the issues of domestic racism and the U.S in the Vietnam War. He wanted to bring peace back to the world. (Drew, Elizabeth) He accomplished having done well for the U.S in the way of improving revenue sharing, the end of the draft, new anticrime laws, and a broad environmental program. He tried to, like he promised to appoint Justices of conservative philosophy to the Supreme Court. As well, he went to Beijing and Moscow in 1972, he tried to settle down the disagreements and friction with China and the U.S.S.R. He met with the Russian leader Leonid I. Brezhnev who made a treaty to limit nuclear weapons, which was pretty important. (“Richard Nixon Biography”). His most important achievements were made in the area of foreign policy. So when he visited China in 1972 he brought it out of dangerous isolation. He was went to Moscow, where he managed the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty, on his path to a more equal and peaceful country. He went on to save Israel from near annihilation in the 1973 war and eventually signed the peace treaty with North Vietnam. At the end of his time as president he had done amazing things for other countries and had made peace to millions. He tried to do many good deeds during his presidency but as I talked about earlier, his personality made him do anything and everything he has to do to succeed for him and his country. Richard Nixon was the 37th U.S President from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974 and during his term, President Nixon would become one of the most talked about administration. This was due to the Watergate scandal; this would heavily over shadow his other accomplishments and bring the White House under the microscope. Nixon would tap phones and record conversations of people when he would have meetings. He did end the war in Vietnam and improved our relationships with China and the USSR. One of his objections in the United States was to try and bridge the divide in our cities and try to heal the war weary people of our nation, because of all the disagreements over Vietnam.

Nixon impacted the image of the U.S. presidency in many ways. Richard Nixon did accomplish some good while in presidency however he also performed illegal actions. His wrongdoings completely obscured his greatness, and he was remembered as the only President to resign instead of facing impeachment. As Vice President, he would travel wherever he was needed, and he continued this devoted mentality into his presidential terms (Oates, 338). As President Nixon restored a relationship with China and accomplished the first major arms agreement with the Soviet Union.
In general I would say Richard Nixon was a fairly decent president. During a time where there were many protests amongst the American public (especially the youth) against the troops in Vietnam, Nixon was able to pull the troops out of the war. Nixon also reduced the tensions with the Soviet Union, and helped China join the United Nations. He also helped decrease the amount of racial discrimination by segregating schools in the south. It is a shame though, that those achievements of his are not acknowledged because of the Watergate Scandal.
He stayed in his hometown and started to attend Whittier College. His grandfather from his mother’s side of the family helped pay for his education. In 1933 Richard became engaged with Ola Florence Welch, the daughter of the Whittier chief police. They later broke up in 1935. In 1934 when Richard graduated from Whittier High School, Richard received a full scholarship to attend Duke University School of Law.

Because the Supreme court ruled against the president, Richard Nixon was the first president to ever resign from office. Some say because of this political scandal parts of the government were “cleansed” or improved. Some of Nixon's aides were even sent to federal prison. Congress passed laws for campaign financing, government ethics and freedom of information.
Many people believe that Nixon may not be the best candidate for president. There is a great deal of evidence that supports that fact of Nixon being the best person to run our country, which was given in the prior paragraphs. Mr. Nixon had the right mindset, attitude, and background to become our next president. As you can see Richard Nixon only wants the best for our country. All of his policies are supported by facts and most are not biased.

People broke into the Watergate building to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. Nixon knew about the break in before hand and tried to cover it up. When people found out about him trying to cover it up, he decided to resign as president. He gave his speech on August 8th 1974 and resigned on the 9th.
