Gregor’s initial reaction to his transformation shows his preoccupation with work. His confusion over his radical transformation does not last long, quickly becoming concerned with work and disregarding that he woke up physically transformed into a monstrous vermin. Immediately after realizing he had transformed, Gregor explains, “Well, I haven’t given up hope completely; once I’ve gotten the money together to pay off my parents’ debt to [the boss] that will probably take another five to six years… But for the time being I’d better get up, since my train leaves at five” (4). Emma Jaramillo Mrs. Gower English Honors 8 3 March 2023 A Character’s Inevitable Change There are many ways that a person can change. Whether it be from trauma, acting, or simply, time. Like people, characters also change throughout their stories.

Change is a part of life that can be beneficial, harmful, or both. Every day people dream of becoming something they are not with hopes they can achieve what they believe to be a better life. In “The Ruined Maid” by Thomas Hardy and “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” by Karen Russell, both narrators undergo a drastic transition in their lifestyles. In Hardy’s poem the narrator, Melia, goes from living a simple farm life, to living a luxurious life as a prostitute. In Russell’s short story the narrator, Claudette, transitions from life as a wolf-girl to becoming an average human girl.

Change is something that everyone and everything goes through. Changes could be good, or they could be bad. It all depends on how you view the world, and the people you surround yourself with. Scrooge, a character in the story: A Christmas Carol, goes through a change throughout the story, it takes a while, but by the end of the story, Scrooge goes from a miser, to the most cheerful, charitable, and generous person the town has ever known and it all happened in one night.

With the texts: River and Tides by Thomas Riedelsheimer, “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, and “Magic Island” by Cathy song, we are able to look at change in a positive manner and realize that change comes with multitude of opportunities that allow humans to live better lives and develop wellbeing. Change enables us grow as better individuals, improve our lives, and to start our lives anew. There is no denying that change hosts troubles and upheavals, however, in the end these difficult situations only cause us to grow as better human beings. From Andy Goldworthy’s sculptures in River and tides, we are able to see an abstract demonstration of how upheavals can make one evolve into something greater. Goldsworthy’s sculpture was slowly consumed by water, due to natural variations in water levels–production of tides.

Referring back to Gregor in The Metamorphosis, he was once very social and even had a job requiring talking and visiting people and places. However, this all changed when he could no longer communicate with anyone. All of the sudden, Gregor was unable to be the social being he was. “‘I’ll get dressed right away, pack up the samples, and set off. You’ll allow me to set out on my way, will you not?

“The Metamorphosis”, written by Franz Kafka, takes place in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the city is unspecified. The protagonist, Gregor Samsa, is turned into a giant bug and struggles to regain his harmonious life as a traveling salesman. Gregor goes through both a physical and emotional change throughout the novel, from turning into a bug and then being unable to provide for his family because of his condition. Gregor has been changed into a giant bug where he is a not a pleasant eyesight to his family and isn't accepted by his father and mother but only his sister. As the novella begins,”he found himself transformed right there in his bed into some sort of monstrous insect”.

Introduction: Change leads to both positive and negative situations, however concludes in transformation. Whether negative or positive, change will alter aspects, and transform lives. The use of literature enables individuals to accept that change results in growth. Change can have three main perspectives: changing self, changing worlds and changing perspectives. These perspectives are all represented in the novel, Catherine, Called Birdy, written by Karen Cushman, and are also presented in the short story Sky High, written by Hannah Roberts.

Gregor Samsa’s transition from human to vermin was not the only shift that happened through the duration of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. The novel is centered around Gregor who wakes up as a vermin, presumably a cockroach, which catalyses a series of emotionally traumatic experiences for him and his family, culminating in Gregor’s death. Yet the most significant change is, in fact, the gender role reversal seen both with Gregor and Grete, his sister, as Gregor becomes more effeminate and Grete becomes more emasculate, directly correlating with their societal and emotional transformation due to Gregor's physical change. From the moment, Gregor wakes up he has transformed. But not just as a vermin.

Change must be accepted in order to make progress, or progress is not at all possible. The world would still be living in yesterday’s life, but would be living it today. Another example to relatable to most would be someone change over the years. As someone close to that certain individual gets used to their characteristics, one may get used to that person. But changes overtime occur regardless of their emotions towards that change.

In the metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, there are significant actions and transformations which make the story sad, and strange with a happy ending. Explanations that are dramatic events that intensify the excitement of all these actions. Reality and reflection play an important role in this story because the events that happened could be applied and assimilated with modern society. The story is very sad and realistic, some of the things that are related in Kafka's story can be found in modern families today.

Andy Warhol once said, “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself”. Change is affected by time and by people in different ways. A negative change can ultimately have a positive outcome. Change is not always bad, but in order for it to be good you need to make it good. Change occurs all the time, and it happens to everyone at one point in his or her life.

Kafka’s, The Metamorphosis, brings to light the realities of what many face in everyday life. In life, it is natural for people to expand their horizons and grow to develop a persona unique to themselves. However, all too often the process is interrupted and eventually destroys itself and all the potential that comes with it. In the story, the reader sees Gregor and his mutational life slowly disintegrate into his later demise. Here, the idea of self-worth and acceptance plays a major role in Gregor’s life and his transformation into a bug.

When the Levees Broke by Spike Lee is a documentary based on the remembrance of hurricane Katrina that sabotaged the victims mainly in New Orleans, Gulf State of Louisiana; and other US states including Mississippi; Alabama and Florida. This documentary briefly summarizes on a fight or flight struggle of many citizens in New Orleans had to challenge in their lives. To start off, in the beginning of the documentary the mayor highly suggested the citizens evacuate their home country. Some residents were in denial and refused to leave their home country while others decided to leave because they wanted to survive and protect their family. Some of the citizens were prideful and strong about their city so they were in denial of evacuating.

An example of change is when Raphael said “We stuck together we stayed in the dark.” I understand from this that rat has changed into a boy with friends and who is cared for. This reveals to me that Rats change was good for him and he has found some kind of happiness. Rats change helped me understand the importance of friends and family.
