The confederate army was worn out from their march to Shiloh. The next day, Grant’s army once gain clashed with Beauregard’s. This battle lasted until about mid-day, and resulted in Beauregard retreating to Corinth. This led to the battle of Corinth, which was an easy victory for the Union Army. General McClellan made the South flee causing the Union to win another battle. In Mississippi General Grant led another battle to victory with the surrender of the Confederacy. General Sherman led the Union army in Savannah and destroyed the cities and broke the spirit of the Confederacy. This was another victory. By April 12th, there were only two lasting United States forts left in confederate territory. One of which is called Fort Sumter which was under command by Major Robert Anderson. The fort was running low on food and water. They were surrounded by enemy territory and had no way to resupply. President Lincoln began to worry.

Eicher said, “Fort Pillow marked one of the bleakest, saddest events of American military history.” and the Confederates calling it uncivilized. In response the Confederacy passed a law in May 1863 demanding that black U.S. soldiers captured while fighting against the Confederacy would be tried as slave opposers in civil courts; a capital offense with automatic sentence of death.

Despite having fewer men, the Confederates were ultimately victorious as a result of their superior military strategy and their understanding and use of the local terrain. The Second Battle of Bull Run was greatly impacted by both the resources of the both the Union and the Confederate troops, as well as by the local geography of the battle.

Each side had many casualties and therefore, the Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point during the Civil War because of the effects that came with the battle. In the short story Battle Royale by Ralph Ellison, the theme was grounded in fear. The group of African American boys were forced in participation in harmful activities. His grandfather gave him advice in the beginning of the story. The meaning to his grandfather’s last words could be translated into two ways; to rebel or to follow. The grandfather was instructing him to agree with the white man's orders.
