The stories The Lottery by Shirley Jackson and The Rocking-Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence share similarities in their stories. The difference is based on the three major areas in examining any story which are the character, plot, and setting. In general, the atmosphere is configured so that readers are attracted to fiction. A brief prose tale that can be read in one sitting, usually plot function as the driving force. The writer allows the reader to have a complete view of the story, based on the configuration.

“The Lottery” Interpretive Essay “The Lottery”, a short story by Shirley Jackson, is about a lottery that takes place in a small village. The story starts of with the whole town gathering in the town square, where Mr. Summers, the official, holds the lottery. After that, every family draws out of an old black box, and a certain family gets picked. Out of the certain family, one person gets picked as the unlucky “winner” of the lottery. In this short story, after the Hutchinson family gets drawn, Tessie Hutchinson is declared “winner” of the lottery.

In life we will be faced with things that are wrong but continue to go on whether out of tradition or just plain cowardness of anyone willing to speak up and make a change. We may also face hardships within our lives in one way or another that present us with a challenge, the question is will we be willing to try and make things better or will we be willing to stand by and make no change for the better. If not for those in the past willing to stand up and make a change to confront things that are wrong in the world it would be a totally different place than it is today. “The lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “The Rocking Horse Winner” by D.H Lawrence show luck is not always devoid of tragedy and those who are lucky are not always winners. The actions in both these stories taken by the main cast of characters both end in tragic ironies each differing in tone.

On June 26 of 1948, Shirley Jackson’s short story, The Lottery, made its first appearance in an issue of The New Yorker. Jackson was surprised by the substantial amount of backlash she received in regards to her harrowing writing that manifests the rituals of human sacrifice. The story takes place in a small town on an ordinary summer morning. The villagers assemble at the town square for the annual lottery, where one of the villagers will be randomly chosen to sacrifice themselves to the gods of a fertility religion. The villagers believe that a human sacrifice must take place in June to ensure that a bountiful harvest was ahead of them.

The parable of The Prodigal Son and the short story of The Rocking-Horse Winner have many similarities as well as differences. The Prodigal Son was written by St. Luke and is recorded in the book of Luke in the Bible. D.H. Lawrence wrote the short story: The Rocking-Horse Winner. Both of these stories are fiction based, and they hold many good lessons to learn from them.

Usually there’s a winner in a lottery, but not in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”. This story intrigued me by it's suspenseful nature and it's chaotic events. In small town America, they come together once a year to perform an annual tradition. Mrs. Jackson demonstrates literary devices such as foreshadowing, mood, and conflict in “The Lottery”. Foreshadowing is used quite a few times in “The Lottery”.

The story “The Rocking-Horse Winner” is written by the English novelist D. H. Lawrence. The book was published on July 1926, then made into a full-length movie directed by Anthony Pelissier on 1949. The story is about an English who lived with a very small income coming from the mother and her luckless husband. Their children, a son named Paul and two other sisters thought that their house was haunted by the anxiety of their own family and even heard the house whispering “There must be more money.”.

After that, each family member older than 3 years of age re-draws a slip of paper again and this time, the person with the black mark on their paper gets picked as the “lucky winner” of the lottery. In this short story, after the Hutchinson family gets drawn, Tessie Hutchinson is declared “winner” of the lottery, with her reward is being stoned to death.

“The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson is atypical of any other story from its time. Jackson utilizes a shift in tone that is emphasized through the event’s location, attendees, and rituals found within her work to take readers on a wild ride. What begins as an average day on June 27, unfolds into a situation that never could have been expected. Jackson’s use of tone in “The Lottery” functions as a way to distract readers from the overall mood of the gathering. The pleasant and easy-going tone, presented throughout the beginning of Jacksons’s work aims to deter readers from questioning the villager’s initial motives.

Throughout centuries, traditions and rituals have had the ability to control one’s behavior. In Shirley Jackson’s, “The Lottery”, she tells the reader of a small village. On the surface, this community may seem relatively normal. However, despite the picturesque appeal, this falsely serene village has a distinct deceitful flaw. On June 27th, every year, a lottery takes place.

In both short stories, “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” by Ursula Le Guin and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, there is an idea of sacrifice. The ideas of sacrifice in both stories compare but also contrast; someone is sacrificed for the happiness of the majority, but in each story happiness is achieved in different ways. In neither community does everyone necessarily agree with what is going on but they have to do what is best for everyone. In “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” the town chooses to sacrifice one child for the happiness of the whole community.

“The Lottery” is an realism/horror story written by Shirley Jackson. The story is about some villagers of a small New England town who follow the tradition of making a lottery every year. When it comes, they like to celebrate it with the correct rules and the correct objects so they can feel more comfortable. Everyone need to take a slip of paper from a small black box, and the paper with a black dot in it means that the family is the winner, then they raffle again; Bill Hutchinson, who was the husband of the protagonist Tessie Hutchinson picked a paper with a black dot in it, that meant that Tessie was the winner of the lottery, then she starts complaining because the drawing was not conducted properly. At the end, the townspeople moved off to a cleared spot outside the town and they begin stoning her to death (Jackson).

The short story “The Lottery” written by Shirley Jackson, the plot in the story that it only gives people an account of drawing lots to determine the winner who shall be stoned to death for harvest. However, we get a deep impression of the characters and their fate after reading the story. Jackson indicated a prevalent theme, the indirect of characterization and using symbolism and irony to modify this horror story. The Allegorical story of “ The Lottery” is often regarded as a satire of human behavior and social institutions, and exemplifies some of the central themes of Jackson’s fiction, including the victimization of the individual by society, the tendency of people to be cruel, and the presence of evil in everyday life.

Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” is an account of a tradition gone awry. In this short story the villagers of this town have a tradition where they have a “lottery” to see who gets stoned to death. The characterization and symbolism used in the story makes the reader feel as if society has crumbled with the inhumane tradition that ultimately lost its meaning. Throughout the story, Jackson uses characterization and symbolism to imply a message to society about the meaning of tradition. Through the use of characterization and symbolism Jackson establishes that blindly following traditions can be hazardous
