Most everyone has their own opinion of what an ideal hero is. Heros are definitely impactful in our lives, and play large roles in them. In my opinion, a hero is loyal, kind, and courageous person. I can only recognize a few people in my life who fall under all three of those categories, however while reading The Odyssey, Odysseus stood out significantly as a hero. Throughout the epic, he displayed countless acts of courage and bravery. He is a loyal man who is kind, which makes him a hero in my eyes. He is an incredible hero who can only be compared to a small amount of other heros. Odysseus is a magnificent hero who demonstrates his heroism through many acts of loyalty as the story goes on.
A hero is defined as a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. While this is what the book definition depicts a hero as, we all have a personal opinion or definition of what we believe one is. To many, a hero is the person who fixes a difficult situation. To others, it is a well respected adult or peer. However, through his odyssey, the audience finds Odysseus to be much more than an everyday hero. While other heroes relied on their strength and ability in battle, Odysseus, while also having the skill of all of the other warriors, relies heavily on his cunning when faced with obstacles.

Odysseus, a True Hero In the Odyssey, Homer beautifully illustrates Odysseus’ qualities that make him a hero. While reading the Odyssey, a reader learns of the hardships Odysseus and his crew face on their treacherous journey home from the Trojan War. They experience dangerous traveling conditions and terrifying monsters, and only Odysseus makes it out alive. This was a journey full of unfortunate events and learning opportunities. Odysseus proves he is a true hero by showing throughout his endeavors that he is clever in his actions, devoted to the people around him, and good hearted in all aspects of his life.
The greeks had a very set idea of what a hero is supposed to act like. Not very many people met their very high expectations. They thought of a hero as someone who showed honer and glory in everything they did. They also thought that a hero should be proud and clever. Odysseus was considered a hero to the greeks, because not only did he exceed in all of those things but he represented them effortlessly.

One of the reasons those people might say that is because Odysseus has a hero’s key traits: he was loyal, compassionate, and cunning. Odysseus was loyal to his family by trying his best to get home and succeeding. Compassion was shown by Odysseus when he was patient while plotting against the Trojans. Last but not least Odysseus was cunning when he defeated the Cyclops in the cave whilst escaping.

It could be said that he is not a hero because after he defeats Polyphemus, he yells to him, “If I could take your life I would and take your time away, and hurl you down to hell! The god of earthquake could not heal you there!”(479-481). By saying this, he was challenging a god and belittling Poseidon's power, which does not aline with Greek values. Still, this does not make Odysseus less of a hero. What he said was wrong, but he was punished and he changed his ways.
