In The Fifth Wave the protagonist Cassie Sullivan is strong willed. She is petrified has to do whatever it takes to keep her alive. Throughout the book Cassie is fighting. She is fighting not only for her life but for her families life. It becomes evident when Cassie goes on a bus.

Also, Cassie showed a lot of courage because when they went to Strawberry and went into the Barnett Mercantile, Mr. Barnett kept helping other white folks that came in after Cassie, TJ, Stacey, Little Man, and Christopher-John. Then Cassie started to get angry and so she stood up for herself and the other kids. She went up to Mr. Barnett and questioned him on why he was helping other people before them, even though the other white people were there after Cassie and the kids were. This took a huge amount of courage to do, because she is a black little girl, and she went up and questioned a white man. Mr. Barnett could have injured Cassie, but instead he said a lot of mean things to her.

T.J would make the better friend because it is socially acceptable, he is able to give important information and finally because Jeremy's family has the power to falsely accuse Stacey of a crime. T.J is a much better choice for a friend because it is socially acceptable by the community. It is Christmas and Jeremy has just come to visit and papa is talking to Stacey about Jeremy and T.J.

Leonora Sutter, a character in the book, is a 12-year-old who is African-American and everyday deals with many citizens not liking her because the color of her skin. Courage comes in many ways and Leonora keeping her head high and not paying attention to it is an example. There are many racist people in the town like the KKK.

In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines courage as the ability to do something that frightens one. Many characters in Harper Lee’s mid 20th century novel To Kill a Mockingbird display courage in numerous ways. One character however, jumps out. When first reading the book, most people would say that courage is displayed by those like Jem, Scout, Tom, or Atticus.

Courage can be defined in many ways. According to Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what,” (Lee, 112). In the novel, the character of Atticus Finch- a very strong-willed and fair-minded father and lawyer- demonstrates this courage and commitment during a difficult time in his community. Very similar to Atticus, this definition of courage is shown by the civil rights activist, Mamie Till-Mobley who, with Chris Benson, wrote her story in Death of Innocence.

In the beginning of the story Cassie didn 't understand how racism and segregation worked and thought it was unusual but in that time it wasn 't unusual. Throughout the story Cassie learned how to deal with racism and segregation and learns how to tackle it head on and is a great example of a person who never gives up. Early on, Little Man and Cassie are standing and waiting at the bus stop when the bus goes right by them and doesn’t even acknowledge them standing there. Little Man demands, “Well, where’s our bus?” Cassie replies, “We ain't got one” (Taylor, 13-14). Little Man is confused about why the bus passed them but Cassie knows that the reason they were passed by is that they are black. While the other kids ride by on the bus, they have to walk an hour to and from school every day, just because their skin is a different color.
