Discussant Piece Equality of Resources by Ronald Dworkin in Sovereign Virtue The discussion in the class began from taking into account the two theories of equality as provided by Ronald Dworkin in his work i.e. Equality of Welfare and Equality of Resources. But before we discuss equality, it is also necessary to talk about the inequality which usually arises out of the choices made or because of the circumstances. Thus, Dworkin’s theories of equality consider the inequality of any kind and works on the general notion of ‘Equal treatment’. Though, the main focus is upon the Equality of Resources but in order to better understand the same we first discussed in the class, the Equality of Welfare which is to be seen in the light of the ‘Ethical …show more content…
The next major point of discussion under the Equality of Welfare was the problem of Expensive taste which in my opinion is somewhat in contrast with the egalitarianism or welfarism. I think that focusing to such an extent on the expensive tastes of people will itself endanger the whole notion of the equality of welfare and thus, here I see no harm in implementing the Utilitarian principle and let the focus shift from individual utility to collective utility. Dworkin further presents arguments to show that the theory of welfare is not so coherent one by exemplifying hard cases as that of the handicapped (say Jade’s example) and even proves that the theory of welfare is a weaker one as it may prima faice look good but eventually may fail under hard …show more content…
As many people will be utilizing those resources so as to reach a better position, when compared to others. Such differences may be that of skill, health, labour etc. So, the next proposed solution is that of Insurance in order to curb the inequality reached mainly because of either option luck or brute luck. Where the inequality arising due to option luck is not a problem, the inequality caused by the brute luck is an issue as it involves risk which no one willingly choose. In the case of the optional luck, on the other hand, the person has the option to remove the risk, may be by concentrating more on the initial just and equal distribution or may be by computing the risk during distribution itself but any how it fails to qualify the envy test. Thus comes into frame the notion of insurance, so as to convert the brute luck into an optional one by taking the insurance. Also, the concept is not just confined to insurance rather it also covers the insurance of the disabled where the notion of disability is so wide so as to cover the mental as well physical disability. However, my question is whether we will be able to convert the brute luck into an optional luck? Whether it is an efficient means in the cases of health/

As generations changed the country has returned to being unequal. In “Confronting Inequality” Paul Krugman states several points on the world being unequal, but his whole purpose is to help reverse those changes. He begins stating a question, “Why should we care about high and rising inequality?” The living standards, politics, and income are three reasons we should care. An equal society could benefits us in becoming healthier and less competing.

Contrasting Values and Theory Applied Twelve pairs of competing values are listed in chapter one with explanations to help begin understanding what social welfare is and how it is connected to social workers. This essay includes personal beliefs with each set of values, chosen pair of values, how paradigm relates to the chosen values and the social values reflected in the paradigm. Undeserving versus Deserving. An individual that is self sufficient may not be eligible for the same benefits as someone that is not. The severely mentally ill population will not have the same services of a general mental health population.
William Shakespeare states, in his play "King Lear," that "so distribution should undo excess, and each man have enough.” Shakespeare simply suggests what men should do in order to demolish the inequality that happens to everyone, as well as one's values and opportunities. As like Shakespeare, a lot of different authors and writers utilize their pieces of literature as a tool to oppose the inequality which exists in every society, so does Simone Weil. She witnesses a lot of unfairness in her lifetime that pursuits the author to form her belief about equality which later reflect on her writing. "Equality" is one of the texts that Simone Weil focuses on the idea of unequal abilities of men that creates variable social levels by identifying two
1. Introduction Income inequality has grown significantly during this past decades and this phenomenon continues to increase over the years. This problem is constantly discussed in the daily news all around the world. Several consequences of this increase of inequality between people leads to economic problems such as high unemployment rates, lack of work for young people, fall of demand for certain product. The gap between rich and poor is increasing, the rich are richer and the poor are poorer as a result politicians and economists try to adopt certain policies in order to reduce this gap.
In the story “The Upside of Income Inequality”, Gary S. Becker and Kevin M. Murphy effectively express’s the importance and need for income inequality in our society. Furthermore, Holly Ellyatt’s newspaper article Income Inequality: Is It Good For Everyone? serves to also point out that economic success and greater productivity is linked to “income inequality”. Although it may seem extremely unfair for someone to make up to two hundred and fifty times as much money as someone else, this notion of “income inequality” actually benefits the society as a whole by encouraging others to work much harder in life and better themselves and their education.
The problem with the widened wealth gap is that the inequality may harm the quality. Meaning that those in the higher classes see it as you can use the money with no restrictions. However, economist believe that the “relationship between inequality and economic freedom, with the possibility that policies that are meant to reduce inequality will reduce economic freedom, which will then only make inequality worse.”
The conclusion drawn is that Equity has developed, and the usage of some equitable maxims made equitable rules more determinate. Thus, the propositions made by the Professor is partially agreed. On the other hand, it is also argued that
Ask yourself where you draw the line on whether something is right or wrong, ask someone else where they draw a line on whether something is right or wrong. This idea of where we stand on our moral values and how we announce them almost always relates similarly to others around us. Could this be because we are within a similar culture, or could it be because we share similar ideas? No matter what, it will always come down to the statement of each and every one of us having our own moral values, no matter how similar they may be. In this essay, I will be able to give an overall insight on the ideas given from three philosophical theories, Egoism, Utilitarianism, and Relativism.

Introduction All over the world, there is an obvious contrast between the living standards and lifestyle of the rich and the poor. Moreover, there is a large gap between the populations of poor and wealthy. This is known as the Wealth Gap, and it is caused by Wealth Inequality. Wealth Income/Inequality is defined as “The unequal distribution of assets within a population.” Wealth is defined as more than just the amount of income a person has, but instead the value of a person’s assets.
Inefficient policies all around the world and especially in our country are contributing to problems in the society. And the biggest problem which the world faces today is the problem of “Poverty” and “Inequality”. It is hard for one to determine whether poverty causes inequality or is it the other way around because both these problems are interrelated. Poverty is something which is caused due to transferring wealth in to the hands of a specific group and the unjust policies of the government. And inequality is discriminating a person in all spheres of life which gives a rise to sense of deprivation.
