Leonardo Muro-Garcia Professor Benjamin Dally English 5 (Section 2) October 23rd, 2015 Sacramento High School Baseball Baseball History: The first organized game was played in Hoboken, New Jersey, on June 19, 1846. The Knickerbockers faced a team called the New York Nines, who won the game 23 to 1.The baseball we play today still follows many of the rules Cartwright thought up in 1845. (Creative Classroom April/May 1990) According to Erik Borg, a “discourse community” is a community where the “members actively share goals and communicate with other members to pursue those goals” (398). A discourse community I took part of was my High School’s Varsity Baseball Team. Sacramento High’s Baseball team was very competitive, due to the fact that it was the least favored sport at Sac High, so we were always trying to prove ourselves better than any other sport. We had to do many things in order to try and get fans to come out and watch us play. The team consisted of six-teen players and four coaches whom worked extremely hard the past four years to finally earn the title of Champions. …show more content…
He had great communication with the sports director to make sure he scheduled games for us and that we had adequate funds to be able to have transportation to and from games. Then there was the Pitching Coach “Kirk Crump” whom basically made sure that the pitchers on the team “perfected” their pitching and that the pitchers were not injured. Finally, we had the Infield Coach “Tim Vogues” who made sure that the infield was doing their job, and the Outfield Coach “Jermaine Jordan” who made sure that the outfield was doing their
Baseball and football are different. Yes, both sports play on unique field dimensions, scoring, and time systems. But the managers, players, and fans truly give these two sports their identities most associate with them. To start, the personalities and attitude of the coaches (or managers) follow established norms for each sport.
The tan sand around the bases with the growing green grass and old worn out cracked dugouts is where I would have been. The Albany baseball diamond was where me and my friends hung out. We would hit old worn out baseballs with the leather coming off of them and run around the aged bases and sleep on the old rickety metal things they called bleachers. The school right beside it also had a playground which we may or may not have supposed to be on. Dairy Dream was just across the street with the delicious smell of hot chocolate fudge and the nose tingling scent of vanilla ice cream that filled the air.
During that series between the heavily favored Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds, gamblers were able to convince eight players on the White Sox to take money to “throw” the series. The players were promised $100,000 if the ensured that the White Sox lost the series. In today’s dollars, that was $1.2 million. Eddie Cicotte, a White Sox pitcher who implicated in the scandal, was promised a bonus of $10,000 by the owner, Charlie Comiskey, if he won 30 games throughout the season. When he got to 29 wins, Comiskey ordered Eddie Cicotte benched to prevent him from getting 30 victories.
The New York Yankees organization began in 1901(New York Yankees History)At the time the team was known as the Baltimore Orioles(New York Yankees History). The team would then become the New York Highlanders in 1903 until 1912(New York Yankees History). In 1913 the team became known as what it is today, the New York Yankees(New York Yankees History). The team today is owned by the Steinbrenner family and it's home is Yankee Stadium in the borough of the Bronx.
In 1845, some young fellows in Manhattan composed themselves into the Knickerbockers BaseBall Club and recorded the tenets of the diversion which they were playing. History of Baseball appears to be dependably to have lived more in myth that ever. Youngsters in England and the United States had been playing variations of the diversion for quite a long time, for example, one o ' feline, rounders, and base. Not until 1901 was the National League compelled to acknowledge the American League, the main other surviving real association. The surprising undefeatable season of the national visiting Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1869 prepared for baseball 's all out professionalization in the 1876 development of the National League of Professional Base Ball Clubs.
Baseball during the Great Depression faced many challenges, but it also provided a source of entertainment and distraction from the economic hardships of the time. Many teams struggled financially, and attendance at games dropped significantly, but the sport managed to survive and even thrive in some ways. One of the biggest challenges faced by baseball during the Great Depression was the economic downturn that hit the United States in the early 1930s. Many teams struggled to make ends meet, and some were forced to fold or merge with other teams.
The interview questions were based on the “six characteristics of a discourse community according to John Swales” (Swales, 1990) as well as “the chacteristics of an activity system according to Elizabeth Wardle and Donna Kain” (Donna Kain, 2014). During, the interview many of the questions allowed for further discussion to take place about each individual characteristic of the community and how that characteristic benefits the community. Similiarily, in the interview other topics were discussed such as events that were going to take place in the community and how those events connected with the “ motives of the association” (Donna Kain, 2014). The interview was conducted like a conversation to easily receive information concerning the characteristics of an activity system or discourse community. The readings contributed to the interview as well by defining the characteristics to make it easier for the interviewee to understand the different concepts being discussed.
The discourse community of St. Thomas More University Parish is a growing parish that is encouraging involvement and spiritual development. Before delving into the discourse community,
At the end of my presentation, the audience will be able to explain the reasoning why the Little League World Series makes kids strive to succeed in the sport of baseball. So, I wrote this speech a little while ago so bear with me, four score and seven years……. oh I apologize that’s the wrong speech. So for starters….(start into Relevancy Statement). My topic is relevant to you because if you have kids or want to have kids you should get them involved in sports, my presentation specifically supports why they should play baseball or softball.
Baseball is a sport that has been played in the United States for over 150 years. The origins of baseball can be traced back to a variety of ball games played in Europe, including rounders, cricket, and stoolball. These games were brought to North America by British colonists in the 18th century, where they were played in various forms. The modern game of baseball is often credited to Abner Doubleday, a Civil War veteran who allegedly invented the sport in Cooperstown, New York, in 1839. However, there is little evidence to support this claim, and most historians believe that baseball evolved over time from earlier ball games.
We communicate in many ways, either by email, telephone, text, face to face, social media or letters and the language we use allows us to get things done, nonetheless the language and communication method in which we chose to use can vary depending on the discourse community. Much like John Swales suggests a discourse community involves a group of people who share the same common public goals, such as shared interests, rules, structure, and vocabulary. When thinking about the several discourse communities I am evolved in, which include family, coaching football, college student, and a few friends. These discourse communities have influenced me, given me insight of where I come from and tell who I am as a person. I also believe much like Swales,
Baseball was the “national pastime” in the 1920s. More people went to baseball games, more people followed baseball, and more people played baseball for fun than any other sport. The most famous athlete in the United States in the 1920s was the baseball star George Herman “Babe” Ruth, the right fielder of the New York Yankees. The hole nation began a big movement of the trend sport of the 1920s. It was amazing how this sport create a big impact in the american society, as no child, no man and scientist could resist to watch or hear a baseball game.
Israel Andrade Baseball subculture a. The subculture that I would like to study is baseball. I would like to study the individuals who participate in this sport as well as those who follow it. The reason for my interest in this subculture is that I’ve been a casual participate of this culture as I have played baseball during high school as well as attended a few professional games, but I want to learn more about the individuals who devote their spare time to baseball. The game of baseball is very prevalent in American culture it has even been titled America's pastime.
An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals
Busch Stadium is one of the most premier stadiums in all of baseball. No other stadium can compete with the intense atmosphere, the memories made in baseball heaven, or the magnificent Ballpark Village on Clark Avenue. It doesn’t matter if it’s a scorching ninety-degree day, causing perspiration to run down the bridge of your nose, or if it’s a frigid thirty-degree night, causing every bone in your body to shiver. The Cardinals franchise has a prominent playoff history and the atmosphere that is present in Busch Stadium reveals why to you.
