The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller that was written in the 1950s. It was about the Salem Witch Trials that took place in 1692, in Massachusetts. The author played around with the definitions in his text. The word "Crucible," has many different definitions to it. Arthur Miller used each definition in the play to express the meaning of the word, Crucible. The Crucible can either be known as a container that can withstand very high temperatures that is used to separate metals through heat and pressure, a harsh test, a trial, a place or situation in which different cultures can mix together to produce something new, or a lamp or light hanging in front of a crucifix. Reverend Paris was put on trial in Salem. He was put on trial to test whether he cared more about his position in Salem or congregation. Martha Corey was also put on trial. She was accused of writing in the devil's book and the death of Putnam's seven babies. Tituba did not stand trial, because she had already confessed. John Proctor was accused of witchcraft, and was then hung, after pleading guilty in trial, along with his wife, Elizabeth, who was allowed to wait until she gave birth. They considered themselves a perfect Christian. There was many examples of Puritan quality in the Crucible. God was mentioned a lot, discussion of sins, and centering someone's life with god.
