Chapter Summary: The Salem Witch Trials

In 1671, a case of so-called witchcraft occurred at Groton, and Samuel Willard, then the minister in the village took an interest. Two years later, he published a volume of sermons entitled Useful Instructions for a professing People in Times of great Security and Degeneracy: delivered in Several Sermons on Solemn Occasions, constituting of three sermons, one of which preached the consequence of this supposed manifestation of the Devil. The victim was Elizabeth Knapp, who exhibited the symptoms that were (then) associated with possession, but would now be considered a marked case of hysteria, which will be covered later in the essay. The first case of the Salem Witch Trials involved Betty Parris and Abigail Williams, the daughter and niece of the minister of Salem, Samuel Parris. They would later accuse the family maid, Tituba and two women of the village, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne of bewitching them.

The Salem Witch Trials are widely known in American History. My inquiry into the trials consists of a series of questions: What was the purpose of mainly targeting women? How did the trials overall affect future legislation? How did the trials change society then and now? This will introduce the misogyny behind the trials, the ages that were mainly affected, and why they were targeted.

Salem was surprised and scared of what happened during the 1690’s. Rosalyn Schanzer wrote the book Witches! The Absolutely True Tale of Disaster in Salem, which is a book that describes the life in Salem during the witch trials. The witch trials was a period of time when people accused others for being witches and using witchcraft. It was a devastating time for the Puritans.

The Innocence of People During The Salem Witch Trials why did so many people during the colonial era devote their time to witchcraft? where they falsely accused or did they actually make a deal with a devil? The people that had to die or suffer were either witches or innocent peopIle. The colonial people back in 1692 were unaccepting of differences in people; therefore, they killed anyone they believed practiced witchcraft whether it was true or not. Court Trials

The surroundings of the trials(such as weather)changed from winter all the way through spring 1692.They also were very paranoid of a lot of things. Such as witches and the devil. The main theories i will state are Reasons for the witch hunts.

A passage from Witchcraft in Salem, “The motive of the young girls themselves can be questioned. In a society where women had no power, particularly young women, is it not understandable how a few adolescent girls, drunk with unforeseen attention, allowed their imaginations to run wild.” That quote perfectly describes how the situation in Salem lead to a terrible lead of events of The Salem Witch

At that time, supernatural beings and Satan were considered part of everyday life, so when an epidemic of fits of madness broke out within the nation, mostly targeting young girls, people began to panic and blamed all this on the practice of black magic. A total of about two-dozen people were trialed and executed. But was it really because of witchcraft that people were having fits, and what were the strange sightings around the town of Salem?

In Salem, Massachusetts, Puritans were strong believers in the Bible. The Bible states, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” The Puritans beliefs led to them accusing 20 innocent people of being a witch, this resulted in their deaths in 1692. Even though the Puritans couldn’t see it at the time, their accusations were really based off jealousy, lies, and Salem being divided into two parts. One cause of the Salem witch trial hysteria was jealousy.

The book does not offer any new insights into the motivations or reasons that the Witch hysteria peaked as it did in Salem, the author does an excellent job at presenting the material in an easy to read and mentally digest

The Salem witch trial hysteria of 1692 may have been instigated by religious, social, geographic and even biological factors. During these trials, 134 people were condemned as witches and 19 were hanged. These statistics also include 5 more deaths that occurred prior to their execution date. It is interesting to look into the causes of this stain on American History, when as shown in document B, eight citizens were hanged in only one day.

One factor leading to the trials was the lack of scientific knowledge to explain natural phenomenon paired with the people’s extreme faith creating a culture of fear. Another factor that influenced the trials were family feuds. These two factors family feuds and lack of scientific understanding together made up the root cause of the Salem Witch Trials.

Not many people know much about what actually happened in the Salem Witch Trials. Maybe someone would think that it was just about witchcraft and crazy people being hanged, but it is a lot more than that. The Salem Witch Trials only occurred between 1692 and 1693, but a lot of damage had been done. The idea of the Salem Witch Trials came from Europe during the “witchcraft craze” from the 1300s-1600s. In Europe, many of the accused witches were executed by hanging.
