1. Social Darwinism was the concept of the survival of the fittest. This basically was that the fittest are the ones who will thrive and do great, while the poor and unfit are just left to fend for themselves or to die. Social Darwinism was a great thing for the fittest and rich, but an unlucky thing for those who are poor and unfit. 2. The Franco-Prussian War took place from 1870 until 1871. This war was between the French Empire and the German states, and it was led by the kingdom of Prussia. The war was caused by some events with German unification. 3. I feel like the Industrial Revolution had a greater impact on the course of Western Civilization. The Industrial revolution was when machinery replaced the jobs of men. Edwin Chadwick especially didn’t like what was going on at this time because he felt like it was really hurting the poor. Many people, though at this time did like what was going on during the Industrial Revolution because these people felt like this is what is needed in order to help Britain’s economy. During the Industrial Revolution people were working crazy long hours, and on top of this they had children working, and doing jobs that no child should ever be doing. The work environment was unsanitary and many people were getting sick and or dying. Enlightenment has many short and long term consequences. During this time, the poor were having to deal with the prices of everything rising, when they were already struggling with the prices of things before. This was good though for certain people, such as investors, etc. These kind of people were able to make money through things such as trade and things that they made. People during the time of enlightenment had a different way of thinking, and so many things were changing. Even though, people’s way of thinking was changing during this time, the topic between men and women’s equal rights was still a struggle. Many people such as Montesquieu, felt that women were less than that of a man. They still felt that a woman shouldn’t have the same opportunities that men do. With religion, though… people demanded that they be allowed to have more freedom when it comes to their religion and worship. People during this time were used to sort of being told what to do with their religion, but these enlightenment thinkers thought otherwise. They felt that people should be able to have more freedom to do as they pleased. In the end, this all was a start to what we have now. People are way more free to do as they please today with religion, and decision making in general. History has brought about a lot of change. There are so many different ideals and beliefs that originated in the past. There were so many wars and killing sover things that were sometimes for the worst.
During the years 1880-1920 there were many issues because of urbanization and industrialization. The industrial revolution brought many new job opportunities with low wages making companies focus on women and children. These opportunities were available but at a cost, they were paid less and they were forced to work up to ten hours. The industrial giants made labor a tough and unfair lifestyle. They wanted more riches, but they were making people suffer in order to obtain the money.
Social Darwinism is when only the strongest survive, during the Gilded Age this was true. Many businessmen during the time period were people who had a vision and invested time and effort to grow the economy they did what they had to do to make their company survive the economy. Some people's business did not survive because the bigger corporations took them out of business, the business that did not survive are were weak and were not strong enough to survive. It is not the bigger business fault it did not survive, the business did not survive because it could not compete with the competition. Social Darwinism is huge reason why the great industrialist are Captains of Industry.

Enlightenment was a time period that revolved around philosophy, science, and society, and is less focused on religion. Enlightenment includes a concept proposed by the philosopher John Locke that all humans, when they are born, are entitled to basic human rights. The Enlightenment also includes the thought that things in the universe are constant, leading away from such a strong reliance on God. The concept of Enlightenment inspired many proceeding declarations, including the USA’s declaration because it encouraged equality to all men. John Locke was an Enlightenment thinker who proposed that as humans, we are entitled to basic rights and that when we are born we are blank canvases and are thereafter altered by our surroundings.
There were some positives; for instance, children were allowed to receive proper education and the adults having enough money to put food on the table. However, that wouldn't change the fact that the Industrial Revolution was full of self-interested factory owners. Which meant that the factory owners only cared about their lives better.
The Enlightenment was a period of time that stressed the importance of reason and individual ideas. Many philosophers published works criticizing a country’s monarch or divulging the flaws they saw in a system within the government, such as the justice system. The Enlightenment also stressed the importance of education, and as a result of this, literacy rates experienced a major upward trend. Now able to read the philosopher’s works, a larger sum of people now were educated on the corruptions within their government. This caused a questioning of traditional practices, and people began to believe they could revise their government.
The Industrial Revolution witnessed the evolution of large urban centers, such as Boston and New York City. It changed society from agrarian to mechanical, which further moved jobs to larger cities. As every coin has two sides, there are negative sides to this. Primarily, it caused severe pollution. The environment condition was bad with smokes surrounding them.
Effects of the Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution was an important event in history. It brought about many positives during its time. For instance, kids were well fed, educated, and clothed. There were plenty of negatives, as well. One very sad example was the machine injuries that happened to both children and adults.
Enlightenment and Great Awakening In America, as the society aged, it was influenced by two cultural phenomena. One was based on intellectual while the other was religion. As the 1700s advanced, American treasure improved, the wealthy spend their money on books. They were exposed to new ideas coming from Europe. On the other hand, the Great Awakening appealed to the less wealthy because it was for people’s emotions.
Something that was good about the industrial revolution was that there was more workers and people could get payed more. Things that were bad was that little kids could. That’s bad because kid get hurt for example, for kids who worked on farms would ride on horse rakes and easily fall off and get crushed. Kids would get overworked after working 12 hours a day.

Although women did not have equal rights as men, women did have the power to influence ideas during the Enlightenment. This is because they took on several roles as leaders, where they had chances and opportunities to act as philosophers and share their new ideas on the society of France. In Salons, high class parties during the Enlightenment that was a place for nobles, and their intellectuals to share their opinions and have conversations with one another was where both men and women were invited to participate and exchange ideas.

The Enlightenment originally began in Europe and found it 's way to the colonies. Before the Enlightenment, people had always believed that the social class in which they were born into would be the one in which they would die. People would follow their leader 's words without daring to question them and believed that when they died they would either face eternal salvation or eternal damnation.
