Heroes are needed for inspiration and to make a difference in the world. When thinking of a hero, some may envision imaginary figures such as Superman or Wonder Woman, while others may think of an individual who has helped them through a hard time. Beowulf is fearless and courageous. He takes on any monster, no matter how gigantic and powerful the monster may be. Beowulf states, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought endless battles. I am old now. But I will fight again, seek fame still” (Beowulf lines 685-687). Even though Beowulf is old when he fights the dragon, he will still fight it. because of his fearlessness. This takes a lot of courage, as Beowulf might lose the battle and die. Beowulf begins to battle the dragon but is about to be defeated for the first time in his life. Heroes often tend to brag about themselves and want to be the center of attention. On certain occasions it is okay for heroes to brag about themselves but not all the time. Not all heroes are perfect, they are also humans, in a way, and they will not obtain victory every time. Beowulf was a young warrior and hero for the Danes and Geats; he had a lot of pride in what he accomplished as a warrior. In the story, Beowulf fought against three monsters; he battled Grendel, Grendel's mother, and a Dragon.
He said before he went to battle the dragon “This dragon’s treasure, his gold and everything hidden in that tower will be mine or war will sweep me to a bitter death!” (647-649) He was brave knowing he could die doing this but he was never afraid of death. This clearly states that Beowulf
Not only have we seen brute strength, honorable courage, and admirable loyalty shine through beowulf, Beowulf also possess a great trait not many others have; his will to fight to the death, or self sacrifice. Not once throughout the story did Beowulf ever turn down a battle. Not once did he fear or flee his enemy. Not once did he ever give up even if death had him by the throat causing his mind to flood nothing but fearful thoughts and feelings throughout his body. Every battle Beowulf fought, he fought as if it was his last and that is what truly makes him the great warrior he is.
Questions of Honor: Beowulf Beowulf’s honor and integrity can be questioned throughout the entirety of the epic poem, Beowulf. Whether or not his actions are inspired by his own pompous arrogance or confidence, one can argue that he is a hero nonetheless. Evidence and experience prove that Beowulf is more of a fearless hero than an excessively prideful man, and his hubris is more than justified due to the formidable duties he is able to execute. Throughout the poem, Beowulf expresses his intense strength and courage to the fearful people in the poem. His daring sense of self-assurance is backed by his victories against all three monsters, (even though he suffers a tragic death after facing the dragon, it is a defeat nonetheless).
Having the qualities of a hero was to be brave, honest, and loyal. This is a time of the warriors. Body: The heroic Code: Beowulf is a poem that has been discussed over a period of years.
In today’s society, anybody can be considered a hero. A hero is a selfless person who is admired for their courageous achievements. A mother, celebrity, or even a mailman can be a hero to someone. In Beowulf, the epic poem translated by Burton Raffel, Beowulf is recognized as a hero who craves too much glory. In today’s world, Beowulf is viewed as an irrelevant hero since he displays poor qualities of arrogance and selfishness.
He had no fear fighting off Grendel, but he did have fear fighting the dragon, but he was not going to give up. Beowulf was so loyal to the Geats he died after killing the dragon. The soldiers in the world are loyal to our country by protecting the citizens and obeying orders. Some soldiers die fighting, but most soldiers would be happy to die that way knowing that they fought for our
After warring against the Swedes, Beowulf’s Gold-Giver and his son died, leaving the throne to the Great Hero. Beowulf’s rule would be glorious, as he proved himself to be a father to his people and great fighter against the enemies of Geatland. He grew older and by the time he was a greybeard, the age of heroes was at its end, with the only survivor being Beowulf. However, evil was not fully vanquished from this Earth, the Great Dragon arose to lay waste to Geatland. Beowulf was always a man who knew his destiny and wyrd; he must’ve known that this beast would preserve his name, but destroy him.
Beowulf’s Unstoppable Courage In the novel Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf possesses unstoppable courage which allows him to help move the plot along and maintain the balance between good and evil. Beowulf first exhibits courage when he first hears the news of Grendel. He immediately assembles a team together and goes over to Heorot upon receiving word of Grendel’s actions. Beowulf shows courage even when no one else volunteers to complete the task: “Then news of Grendel,/ had to ignore, reached me at home...
Although Beowulf is overwhelmed with grief, he also understands his responsibility to protect his people from danger. In accepting the task of fighting the dragon, he also accepts his death, saying that “after many trials,/ he was destined to face the end of his days,/ in this mortal world, as was the dragon,” (2341-2343). Although he knew that facing the dragon would be fatal, Beowulf accepts this and chooses to fight anyway. He protects his men by choosing to fight alone. He tells his men to “remain here on the barrow,/ safe in your armor...
As the story progress, Beowulf became king of the Geats for 50 years when suddenly a dragon emerged from slumber began to burn down villages. However, Beowulf didn’t pay the slightest attention, but instead ignored what was happening. Finally, when the dragon burns down Beowulf’s throne room Beowulf decided that he needs to deal with the dragon. In Beowulf 's eyes, the lives of his citizens couldn’t even compare to his throne room. When Beowulf prepared to fight the dragon he said, “Now I am old, but as king of the people I shall pursue this fight for the glory of winning” (lines 2512-2514).
He could send troops and let someone else deal with the dragon but he does not. He faces the dragon himself like a true hero would. Knowing an enemy this strong could kill him he fights regardless in order to protect his people. Beowulf killed the dragon and gave his life for his people truly the actions of a hero. Even as a king he has nothing to prove to anyone by facing the dragon, which shows that he does not fight for himself he fights because he believes he needs to.
But he knew the greatest threat came knocking at his door for a fight that will live on being told for eternity. Beowulf sacrificed his own life for those around him, “Quickly, the dragon cam at him, encouraged as Beowulf as Beowulf fell back; its breath fared, and he suffered, wrapped around in swirling flames- a king, before, but now a Beaton warrior” (lines 687-691). In the end Beowulf fought till the end fighting not only for himself but for his people. He fought like a king until his death. Beowulf gave the ultimate sacrifice to save his people.
