Should College Athletes Be Paid

Student athletes should be paid because they have a multitude of practices and games, which leaves little time for their jobs and studies. The NCAA has several rules for student athletes to follow. For instance, they cannot accept money over the counter for articles like autographs and pictures. Todd Gurley, a running back from the university of Georgia, was suspended from play because he accepted money for an autographed memorabilia of him.

NCAA athletes took the NCAA to court. Ed O’Bannon, a former NCAA athlete, led the charge for the student athletes. O’Bannon argued that the athletes are being taken advantage of because the schools make millions off of the players’ likeness, meaning the schools make money on selling a jersey, or bobble head of the players and the players deserve some of that money and it should be put into a trust fund for the player. Judge Claudia Wilkin decided the O’Bannon case and gave the athletes everything they wanted in 2014, but in a court of repeals the ruling was reversed and the college just had to pay for the full cost of attendance at the university and did not have to pay for the trust of each athlete (Nocera). The college football player has gained vast popularity among Americans over the past years. The result of this has increased the amount of money the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) profits. The athletes bring insuperable amount of money and recognition to their university. So why aren’t they being rewarded for what their time commitment? In “Should College Players Get Paid?”

But, on the other hand, people believe that college athletes have the right to be paid. They should get paid in some form, to help them financially, to pay their bills whether it be

College athletes like most employees work countless hours a week, miss many school days, and put themselves at risk for injury on a daily basis, but unlike regular employees they do not receive paychecks. NCAA players are compensated for their contribution to their universities through scholarships. It is true that most scholarships cover tuition, and room and board but many fail to realize the many other expenses a college athlete may face. These players are working for a multi billion dollar industry which is exploiting them for their talents and they should be paid fairly for their contribution.

To start, there is a rule by the NCAA that prevents colleges from paying their athletes, Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act, which states “every contract, combination… or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce… is declared to be illegal.” (Text 1, lines 25-27) “Applying this language, any agreement among NCAA members to prohibit the pay of student-athletes represents a form of wage fixing that likely violates the antitrust law.” (Text 1, lines 27-29) Based on this law, it’s obvious that the organization is violating its own law, thus further justifying the fact that these athletes are obligated to receive some form of wage in return. Furthermore, non-supporters believe these players are being compensated through the broad sports exposure they may receive but this isn’t advantageous to everyone.

College is a place for students to obtain a college degree and help them to get ahead on their “real world” careers. Athletic departments in college have become huge money incomes in the past ten years; college football and basketball are even shown on the television. This has resulted in many believing these athletes deserve to be paid for their contribution to the schools athletic income. However athletes in college are given the opportunity to play the sport that they love as well as receive a top education. For some players a $20,000+ per year tuition is not enough, they want to be paid with more than just a scholarship.

College athletes put in a lot of time, effort, and work into the sport they’ve played since they were young, but they aren’t getting paid for it. These student athletes deserve to be paid because they put in countless hours of hard work and balance sports with school work. The first reason athletes in college do deserve to be compensated is because they don 't have time to fit in work with a school and athletic schedule. College athletes don’t have time to get a real job. Student athletes have a very busy schedule, they don’t have time to fit in a job.

It includes only those funds that end up in the NCAA 's bank account.” The FCAA being the organization that would collect and distribute the capital. This research paper described why college athletes should be paid. They make personal sacrifices, and take risks in order to produce revenue for their schools.

While discussing this topic many forget the main reason for college. Students, including athletes, are going to college to further their education and in the end receive a job. The purpose of college is to gain the training and knowledge for a career that one will pursue in the future. These athletes are students, not professionals. And as said before they are being paid in many other ways other then a salary.

"Over the last decade, the debate of whether or not college athletes should be paid has intensified, and many athletes, as well as coaches, have begun to advocate for the cause." (TIMES) Tyler Harnett, a writer at the Huffington Post, took his standpoint on the topic in the article "Why College Athletes Should be Paid," which clearly states his claim, college athletes should be paid. Personally, I disagree with Harnett's viewpoint and I don't believe college athletes should be paid due to education, funding, and overall fairness. To summarize Harnett's article, he starts by talking about his opponents and their viewpoints on the situation, "They are already getting a scholarship, don't be greedy."

Mike says”Students all over the world work hard at the sport that true love and don’t get a lot in return for it”. While college athletes may not exactly be employees, they are more than just students. Consider the life of a student-athlete, though. The average Division I football player dedicates over 43hours per week to his sport, meaning that he spends more than a typical American work-week training and playing football, in addition to his class work. Their work, which generates exorbitant amounts of money year in and year out, deserves Compensation.

Are they students or employees? They spend more time with the sport than in school. Student athletes should be acknowledged for their performances. College athletes should be paid to play because they bring money into the school, advertisement, and they perform the same tasks of pros. College kids bring in thousands of dollars every game day.

Colleges are scouting or looking at kids from the age of ten years old. For March Madness (college basketball tournament) a student athlete would miss up to six days of class that they would have to make up later on, due to traveling and having to be with the team. Football player dedicate 43.3 hours of their own life to college sports. Whether it’s going to the weight room, film sessions, or just putting some type of work for the team. It is also more common for athletes who play football or basketball to go pro than in any other college sport.

They don’t think that 's enough they think they should get paid for the sport they play as well. Most college athletes would just be happy with a four year career playing a sport and not having to pay for their college education.(3) Some of the athletes think they should get paid for doing something that got them that education. Which I don’t think thats right. Also college athletes get opportunities at receiving both a college education and get the exposure to win a major professional contract.(1)
