The controversial debate on whether or not collegiate athletes should be able to profit from their name, image, and likeness has been going on for as long as the brain can think. Each year, year-round, college athletics generate tens of thousands of dollars for their respective institutions, only for athletes to see none of that money. Statistics from a Statista article show that between things such as TV deals, sponsorships, and ticket sales, universities collectively brought in $18.9 billion. (Richter). For athletes to see none that money is a big deal, as without the athletes putting in the time and effort each day, there would be no athletics. Without the athletes performing at a high level, or even just an entertainment level, no tickets get sold, no sponsorships are offered, and no deals are made. It directly comes full circle to being about the amount of work athletes put in. Also, when it comes to the salary of coaches in football, one of the most profitable sports, according to “USA Today,” a conducted study showed that “found that the average total pay for FBS head coaches in 2020-21 is $2.7 million, a 1.1% increase from last year’s average. Those figures include the pay reductions that some coaches are taking this year.” (Schad). Startling numbers to say the least regarding the amount of money college athletics brings in, as well as the salaries of head coaches, only for college athletes to receive nothing. Paying college athletes is something most athletes would enjoy, and most don 't realize how valuable they are to these universities. The NCAA has growing into a multi billion dollar industry. Athletes cannot, however receive any cut from their jersey sales,ticket sales nor the $10.8 billion broadcast deal NCAA just signed. No wonder why there such a big argument going on whether student athletes should get paid. At least they receive something which is an athletic scholarship, that covers their room and board ,tuition and fees, and books.

They do back breaking physical training, travel for games, and miss a lot of study time. All this hard work should not go to waste, and athletes should be paid for their efforts. There are many ways that schools could make paying athletes fit into their budget as well. College athletes could be paid minimum wage of twenty five thousand dollars every year that they play. This would get their brand started as well as helping them pay for essential things. Facilities are also essential to train in however there doesn't need to be a new large lavish facility every few years, like how some schools are spreading their money. He states, “Apparel deals, ticket sales, and school reputations have made it so that some college games have over one billion dollars at play when student-athletes gear up. Despite this, the NCAA still prevented all college athletes from making a single cent from their own popularity without facing serious repercussions. … The plaintiffs argue that it is unjust for the universities, apparel companies, and many others to profit from the hard work of these athletes without allowing them to earn money for themselves” (Palmieri 1607). These athletes give up so much of their time and work so hard, both physically and mentally, to only be rewarded with cheers and praises.
This money is generated through TV contracts, merchandise sales, and ticket sales, all of which are made possible by the hard work of college athletes. It’s only fair that the athletes should receive a portion of this revenue, especially considering the fact that they are putting in the hours of practice and competing in games.
