America's founding fathers were obviously incredibly intelligent. In addition to composing the masterful works of writing that sculpted The United States, they also planned and arranged a system to elect the president unlike any other on Earth. Wary of human nature, the Fathers avoided implementing a simple majority election, and instead developed the electoral college. This system of voting for the president has seen its share of disputes and critics, yet it remains relatively unchanged since its first uses. Those that oppose the electoral college do so because it represents the states unfairly, it has a negative effect on voter turnout, and it occasionally fails to elect a president that represents the majority.

A single citizen’s vote really does not matter. The Electoral College has been around since 1787 has a part of the Constitution. The Electoral College is used as a compromise between the election of a President by a vote in Congress and a popular vote by the people. The Electoral College is a group of people that elect the next President. The Electoral College should not be changed or abolished, but kept the same.

One reason that the framers of the constitution included the Electoral College is because they believed people will only vote for people in their own states and basically play favorites. However, in modern democracy it is evident that this system no longer benefits entirely the people of the states’. It must be modified because the restrictions that vary state to state through each election is now unnecessary in today’s society. In a presidential election an electoral vote should count the same as a popular vote no matter the circumstances. The existence of the Electoral College has remained a source of debate for the population of the United States for centuries. Despite the evident discontent surrounding it, the United States is largely unaware of the disconnect between citizens’ voices and the Presidency. It can be said that popular sovereignty, no matter how pleasant a concept, has become little more than an illusion the people cling to. In short, the Electoral College is an institution that must be abolished, because it violates political equality, is unfair to third party candidates, and is not an accurate representation of the people’s votes.

Voting by popular vote when electing a president is the best choice contrary to the electoral college; in favor of defying the people. Americans vote in order to elect a president of their preference to run our country. Voting by popular vote surpasses the whole electoral process by giving the people not just what they want, but what Americans need. Direct election of presidents remains solid as opposed to the “faithless” electoral college.

The Electoral College has been one of the most debated topics in politics ever since its inception. The age old question about should the Electoral College be abolished. First, lets define what the Electoral College means. Dictionary.com states it’s “a body of electors chosen by the voters in each state to elect the president and vice president of the U.S” (Dictionary.com, 2015). We the people state it’s “the electors from each state who meet after the popular election to cast ballots for president and vice president” (Ginsberg, Lowi, Weir, Tolbert, 2015). I would define it as each states elected representatives and senators will select the president and vice president of the United States (US) by casting their electoral vote.

The Electoral College was a part of the federal plan that our forefathers set for the American people. While it made a place for the stars, as well as the people living in them, by giving them a say in the Federal process and preventing bigger cities from taking over in the presidential election, opponents believe that this is not the case. Even after difficulties that the United States has been through, the states have control over a large number of laws, management, and finance which impact the lives of citizens. Each and every state has their own political cultures, ways of behaving and traditions that continue regardless of our short-term population, a connected economy and news media. The Electoral College was meant to be a way to solve the problems with one large state dominating over another small state based on the population.

Should the Electoral College be Abolished? After the 2000 presidential election, and more recently the 2016 election, many have suggested that America abolish the electoral college, as it has elected the candidate with the lower popular vote on multiple occasions. Although a direct democratic approach to presidential elections (where the election is decided by popular vote) appears to many as an appropriate solution, this approach would grant too much power to large metropolitan areas, make rural votes practically irrelevant, and take away power from states. In order to prevent a situation like such, the electoral college should not be abolished—it must remain, but slight alterations should be made so that America is more equally represented.

I really enjoyed this video because ever since I grasped the idea of the Electoral College I have disagreed with it. However, I never really did any research revolving what goes on behind closed doors. The premises most definitely lead to the conclusion without any additional points. We see that the Electoral College ruins democracy because citizens of smaller states have a louder, more important voice than their larger neighboring states. This means that the votes of the larger states will, in a sense, be ignored also like the wants, and needs of people in set states.
