Rough Draft Why do schools force students to learn topics that they don 't want to learn? Students should be allowed to choose the topics that they want to learn and not the topics the school wants them to learn. Students would be more attentive and creative if they were able to choose their own classes because they would feel more responsible since they choose their own class. Multiple students are punished for being bad at a class like being grounded or getting a detention. Instead of being punished if students where to pick their own classes they could focus more on the class that they already like and are good at and then continue to advance in that class rather than being held back by a class that they don 't understand. Students should not be allowed to select their own classes because they would just pick the classes with friends in them not the classes they need to learn. With both the student and teacher having three less classes a day cuts down on stress. It also cuts down on the homework load for the student. Teenagers have a lot of responsibilities. In the United States, free education is a rare privilege, one that is very under appreciated i might add; every single class skipped is worth a certain amount of money lost, a significant amount of money. Whether a student studies at high school, college, or university, it does not matter – the average cost of a skipped class is in the range between 50$ to 100$ per student. imagine all of the students who find it necessary to skip classes because they don't feel like going, it all adds up. If a student wants to take an AP class, let them take it. AP classes prepare students for college and allows a classroom to be excused from interruptions, because all of the students have the same purpose for taking the AP class. Fremont High School should not punish those who seek a successful future. These “service classes” can be seen as punishments for those who wish to go to college and create careers. Not every student wants to be a hair dresser, not every student wants to be a sewer (720).
We can start by giving students opportunities in our schools to put into practice what we are teaching them. For example, I think it would be a great idea to have student do a mock trial of sorts, just like Levinson talked about in “No Citizen Left Behind.” Students will come up with an idea, such as having open campus for lunch. Then, the students will plead their case on either side before a student jury and have the jury vote on the topic. Students grow more when given the opportunity to have authentic experiences that are significant to them.
According to Education Week Teacher “Reaching performance goals or learning a new language requires students to be organized, to set goals, and to evaluate if they’re meeting those goals. ”(Rambo 2011) Middle schools should allow electives because it helps you by allowing students to learn new skills and experiences, what they may want to do in their future, and gets them prepared for their adulthood. Each class is 90 minutes long, instead of 45 minutes. The length of the classes gives us more time to learn. By the time she is done with all of her extracurricular activities, showering, and eating dinner, it is already 9:00pm. She now has time to do her homework. She finishes her English homework by 9:25 with no problem, but has some difficulty with her math homework. With class, there is a strong indication of where a person residential area is. Living in Trumbull the property tax is high because the houses are big, and the majority of the town are homeowners.
