In Edward Koch’s essay he argues that the death penalty can prevent murders and affirm life. Koch begins his counter argument by addressing the issue of the death penalty being barbaric; he argues that while it may not be the most pleasant way to lower the murder rate it is necessary in order to achieve that goal. Since no other major democracy has a murder rate as high as the United States, the death penalty is necessary for lowering it and eliminating the issue of multiple murders. There have been many cases of murders committing the crime again, so if capital punishment was enacted murderers would never get the chance to kill again. For many years, Australia has debated if they should reintroduce death penalty or not. The year 1967 was the last time when Australia used death penalty as a punishment. There are a total of 22 countries in the world where death penalty is still legal and present and these include countries such as America, China, Afghanistan and North Korea. Despite death penalty still being legal in many countries, it appears that Australia should not re-introduce death penalty. A question to ask regarding capital punishment in the United States is not about the deserving nature of an individual's punishment for their crime, but instead if, as a society, we deserve to take the responsibility of ending someone's life. Nobody should ever be given the accountability for another person's existence. Taking someone's last breaths is not justice. Killing someone is the easiest way out. They should remain for the rest of their lives contemplating their deeds and how they ruined their own lives.

Ever since then America has had the death penalty by law, but is still legal in 33 states and illegal in 18 states. The death penalty should be illegal in every state because it puts innocent people at risk, does not have any effect on crime rates, and life imprisonment is cheaper than the death penalty.

There is considerable proof that many mistakes have been made in sentencing people to death. Since 1973, at least 156 peoples have been freed after evidence found that they were sentenced to die for crimes they did not commit (NBC 2013). According to Eckholm. E et al (2014), Henry McCollum and Leon Brown were put in jail and waiting sentence to die in 1983 for killing and raping a 11 year old Sabrina Bluie in 1983. After thirty years, they were wrongfully convicted for the crime according to DNA evidence.

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, all these phrases are associated with the death penalty. The death penalty, a concept that has been around since the dawn of human existence, has been a controversy in recent decades in the United States, with strong support and strong disagreement. However, even though it is supported by a large amount of states, and has been found to be in the lines of the Constitution it still violates one thing, ethical reasoning. Principle of Utility assert that a concept’s actions or behaviors are right in so far as they promote happiness or pleasure, wrong as they tend to produce unhappiness or pain. The Death Penalty, loss of life due to previous crimes and actions, is believed by some to be extremely costly, inhumane, and cruel unlike some others whom believe it is just, right, and provides closure. The Death Penalty is not a quick and easy process. Most who get sentenced to deaths row wait years for their ultimate punishment of death. Some believe that it is not right to punish and kill a human for actions they have done because, they believe that the inmate should have another chance. Lena Baker, a poor African American female, was put to death by an all white, rich male jury for the murder of Ernest Knight. Ernest was a white rich man who hired Lena to be his personal maid who unfortunately abused his power towards her. He enslaved her, even though slavery was and still is illegal. He was killed in the early 1940’s by Lena Baker. The jury overlooked these details towards race, wealth, and defense and sentenced her to death in 1945.

Death Penalty 144 innocent people died on death row. The Death Penalty shouldn’t be used for anything. It’s wrong because killing the guilty people. It isn’t the way to get justice. The phrase, “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”, isn’t a fair statement.

Waiting in a prison cell for many years, an inmate in death row doesn’t know when his life will come to an end. This is a law under the U.S. government that is allowed to kill people who have committed a crime that’s grave enough. If someone commits a capital crime, they will be punished legally under the law. Taking a rope to the neck, or charging volts to the brain, it’s what people are fighting against today. Organizations are taking action against the death penalty by researching, publishing, and exposing facts whenever officials want to abuse their power with the law.
